International Centre for Responsible Tourism -India (ICRT India) in association
with Dr. Harold Goodwin of the ICRT-UK is organising a National symposium on
Saturday, December 16, 2006 in Bangalore at 'Our Native Village Resort'.

The main objective of this one-day meeting is to bring together Indian
tourism's stakeholders to explore and agree on mechanisms to make Responsible
Tourism the way forward for a destination like India. This symposium will also
serve as a prelude to organising the 2nd International Conference on
Responsible Tourism as a follow up to Cape Town Declaration of August 2002.

Specific objectives and expected outcomes

a.. Create awareness among Government, industry, trade, bureaucrats and NGOs
about responsible tourism.
b.. Initiate and trigger a debate in the mainstream media on responsible
tourism in India and its impact.
c.. Capacity building for responsible tourism in India by identifying,
developing and providing tangible strategies that bridge the gaps existing in
the current scenario.
d.. Form linkages between various stakeholders for on-going support for
initiating responsible tourism in India.
e.. Propagate information about the benefits to industry & community in
adopting responsible tourism policies.
f.. Address the issues and challenges associated with responsible tourism.
g.. Develop a mechanism for awareness and training.
Some of the specific concerns the symposium will seek to address are:

a.. What can be done within and outside the industry to popularise
responsible tourism and the benefits of adopting these policies?
b.. What lessons are there to be learnt and best practises to be developed,
which can be shared by different geographic communities?
c.. How best can the Indian Diaspora position itself to be more effective in
implementing responsible tourism methods?
d.. How can information and communication technology be best utilized to
facilitate a two-way flow in the transfer of knowledge, know-how, information
and other resources which will help the spread of responsible tourism in the
country?
The symposium will be led by the renowned Dr. Harold Goodwin, Professor of
Responsible Tourism Management at Leeds Metropolitan University, UK and
Director of the International Centre for Responsible Tourism -UK. Participants
in the symposium will include travel and tour operators, property owners, NGOs,
Governments, media, academics, National Parks, representatives of community
initiatives and independent observers
