*Dalit massacre accused acquitted due to lack of evidence*

Patna, (Bihar Times): A trial court in Jehanabad on Saturday acquitted all
the 10 accused in the Narayanpur massacre case in the district in which 11
Dalits were shot dead by the banned Ranvir Sena on February 10, 1999.
Additional district and sessions judge, Jehanabad, Shambhu Nath Mishra,
acquitted them as the prosecution failed to establish the charge against the
accused beyond reasonable doubt. Five of the 11 Dalits killed in the
incident, were women.
The Narayanpur bloodbath was preceded by another massacre enacted by Ranvir
Sena. On January 25, 1999, when the then President K R Narayanan, was
delivering a Republic Day eve speech, 24 men and women were gunned down by
this upper caste private army in Shankarbigha village of the same district.
One of the victims, who was in the family way, was shot in the womb. The
Ranvir Sena openly took the responsibility by issuing a Press release to the
media.
These two quick carnages by Ranvir Sena led to the widespread outcry forcing
the then Vajpayee government to impose President’s Rule in the state on
February 11, 1999. However, on March 8 the same year, that is exactly a
decade ago from now, the Rabri Devi government was reinstated.
Incidentally, the acquittal of the 10 Ranvir Sena men came less than a month
after the conviction of three CPI (Maoist) actitists by the TADA court of
Gaya. On February 11, 2009 the TADA court sentenced to death Vyas Kahar,
Naresh Paswan and Yugal Mochi for their involvement in the Bara massacre of
February 12, 1992. Thirty-five upper caste Bhumihars were massacred by the
MCC men in Bara village of Gaya on that date. Four more MCC activists have
earlier been sentenced to death in the same case.
Banned Maoist Communist Centre (MCC) is now called as the CPI (Maoist).
