  This is a cosmetic issue. The warning message is just that— a warning. Though
the message comes up, there is no problem with the install/upgrade happening
like normal. That said, feel free to ignore it. It will get fixed, but it's
nowhere near as urgent as bugs that actually result in the wrong behavior
rather than just a simple extra message.

  update-notifier SRU

  [Impact]
  Cosmetic. Warnings when installing packages using update-notifier downloading
stuff

  [Test case]

  Install flashplugin-installer with apt and check that the output does
  not contain a message like this:

  W: Can't drop privileges for downloading as file '...' couldn't be
  accessed by user '_apt'

  [Regression Potential]

  It just chowns /var/lib/update-notifier/package-data-
  downloads/partial/ to _apt:root, there should not be any regression.

  Recently we got new versions for synaptic 0.82+build1 & apt 1.1.3, but

  When the apt-xapian-index is already up to date, and under certain
  conditions, update-apt-xapian-index throws an exception.

  The index /var/lib/apt-xapian-index is up to date
  Exception ignored in: >
  Traceback (most recent call last):
    File "/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/axi/indexer.py", line 306, in __del__
  AttributeError: 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'unlink'

  This happens more frequently when it is run with nice and ionice,
  which is the case in the cron.weekly/apt-xapian-index cron job.

  This is not severe, since the exception is thrown on exit, and depends
  on the way python3 cleans up the environment. Anyway, this leaves a
  socket file behind, and creates noise in cron logs (see comment #2).

  The patch uses a weakref finalizer in order to remove the socket file.

  [Test Case]

  * `sudo nice -n 19 ionice -c 3 update-apt-xapian-index --quiet`
  * may need to run 4 times or more
  * no exception is thrown

  [Regression Potential]

  * If the os module is unloaded anyway and os.unlink becomes unreachable, we
get the same exception again.
  * We import the `weakref` module, which was not used before.

  [Other Info]

  * This description was updated to reflect the changes in the behavior
  of the patch that was released in Zesty. It still needs sponsoring for
  Xenial.

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   * The base abstraction in xenial misses some ways programs can push
 logs to journald

   * Backport the fix form Artful to:
 1. get rid of the Denies making logs less readable
 2. get users to see the actual log entries will help to unbreak many
other cases

  [Test Case]

   * Install one of the affected packages (in a xenial container is enough)
   * For the case of ntp just install and then run
 systemctl restart ntp
   * in Dmesg you'll see apparmor Denies like
   apparmor="DENIED"
   operation="file_inherit"
   profile="/usr/sbin/ntpd"
   name="/run/systemd/journal/stdout"
   * Each case is different, in this (ntp) case also some log entries are
 missed due to the block
   * After installing the fixed package there is no Deny anymore and
 programs are able to correctly log.

  [Regression Potential]

   * The change is in ubuntu as-is since artful and we are only opening up,
 but not limiting the access - so there should be nothing that is denied
 after the update that was not before.
 Vice versa there could be changes due to things now working correcrly,
 but I'd not see that as a regression.

  [Other Info]

   * affects many packages ntp, tor - I even heard examples of mysql.
 But the fix is in apparmor through base abstraction

  ---

  Using tor 0.2.9.9-1ubuntu1 with Linux 4.10.0-9-generic on Zesty, tor
  fails to start after installing the tor package. "systemctl status
  tor@default" reports:

  Mar 06 16:04:00 zesty systemd[1]: tor@default.service: Main process exited,
code=killed, status=11/SEGV
  Mar 06 16:04:00 zesty systemd[1]: Failed to start Anonymizing overlay network
for TCP.
  Mar 06 16:04:00 zesty systemd[1]: tor@default.service: Unit entered failed
state.
  Mar 06 16:04:00 zesty systemd[1]: tor@default.service: Failed with result
'signal'.

  There are two AppArmor denials in the kernel log:

  Mar  6 15:53:12 zesty-test kernel: [  102.699647] audit: type=1400
  audit(1488815592.268:35): apparmor="DENIED" operation="file_inherit"
  namespace="root//lxd-zesty_" profile="system_tor"
  name="/run/systemd/journal/stdout" pid=3520 comm="tor"
  requested_mask="wr" denied_mask="wr" fsuid=10 ouid=10

  Mar  6 15:53:12 zesty-test kernel: [  102.702418] audit: type=1400
  audit(1488815592.272:37): apparmor="DENIED" operation="file_mmap"
  namespace="root//lxd-zesty_" profile="system_tor"
  name="/usr/bin/tor" pid=3520 comm="tor" requested_mask="m"
  denied_mask="m" fsuid=10 ouid=10

  Workaround: add the following two lines to /etc/apparmor.d/system_tor:

  /usr/bin/tor m,
  /run/systemd/journal/stdout rw,

  I couldn't remember how to that that profile reloaded, so I rebooted,
  and after the reboot tor does start up successfully. "systemctl
  tor@default" reports it as running.

  I haven't checked to see if only one or other rule is actually
  required.

  Importance -> High since this bug makes the package unusable in its
  default configuration on Zesty. Since the AppArmor profile comes from
  Debian's 0.2.9.9-1, this should probably be fixed in Debian.

  [SRU][xenial]boot stalls looking for entropy in FIPS mode

Status in libgcrypt20 package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in libgcrypt20 source package in Xenial:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  [IMPACT]
  libgcrypt20 is not a FIPS certified library. On a machine running FIPS
enabled kernel, the library by default goes into FIPS mode if
/proc/sys/crypto/fips_enabled=1. FIPS mode is not a configurable compile option
currently in the library. Hence FIPS code paths are always executed on a FIPS
enabled machine. In FIPS mode, it runs self tests and integrity checks and it
looks for quality entropy from /dev/random. Additionally in desktop
environments, gnome keyring daemon also queries libgcrypt for /dev/random
entropy, slowing down the GUI startup.

  On encrypted installations, cryptsetup uses libgcrypt20. During boot
  on an encrypted machine running in FIPS mode, cryptsetup invokes
  libgcrypt and it stalls looking for quality entropy from /dev/random.
  This results in significant delays during startup. The issue was
  reported by a FIPS customer.

  The issue impacts libgcrypt versions in xenial and bionic.

  lsb_release -rd
  Description:  Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS
  Release:  16.04

  version - 1.6.5-2ubuntu0.3

  lsb_release -rd
  Description: Ubuntu Bionic Beaver (development branch)
  Release:  18.04

  version - 1.8.1-4

  [FIX]
  This fix proposes to disable libgcrypt reading /proc/sys/crypto/fips_enabled.
We only want fips certified modules
  reading this file and running in fips mode. libgcrypt is not one of our
  fips certified modules, so should not be reading this along with our fips
certified modules to determine whether to run in fips mode. The libgcrypt fips
code in xenial is outdated and some algorithms are no longer allowed by recent
FIPS 140-2 standards.

  However, users do have the option to create a /etc/gcrypt/fips_enabled
  file, manually, and force libgcrypt to run in fips mode. We propose to
  leave this as is, so as to not regress anyone who is using this option.
  We believe a user who uses this option is doing so with awareness.

  [TEST]
  Tested on a VM installed with xenial desktop iso and one with xenial server
iso. Enabled full disk encryption during install. Tested with and without FIPS.
No delays were observed during boot after the fix patch was applied.

  Tested on a VM installed with Bionic development release version of
  desktop ISO with full disk encryption. Installed the xenial FIPS
  kernel and installed the fixed libgcrypt and did not observe any
  delays during the boot.

  With FIPS enabled on encrypted install, without the patch fix, the
  boot stalls before and after prompting for decryption password. In
  desktop installations, a delay is observed during the GUI startup as
  well.

  [REGRESSION POTENTIAL]
  The regression potential for this is small. A fips kernel is required to
  create /proc/sys/crypto/fips_enabled. For users forcing fips mode via
  /etc/gcrypt/fips_enabled or the control option in libgcrypt, nothing has
  changed.

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 40189] Re: [SRU] [xenial] autofs needs to be restarted to pick up some shares

2018-03-12 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Thanks for the ping on this lnog standing bug @Tronde.
I updated the state accordingly.

If there is a change to be identified since Xenial->Bionic one could try to SRU
fix it in Xenial.
But I took a (quick) look and found nothing obvious.
There are major changes like going from sysV init in /etc/init.d/autofs to a
native systemd service in /lib/systemd/system/autofs.service.
One would need to debug if there is something that can be brought into the
systemV init to fix it.

I appreciate your former steps to reproduce, but they failed for me :-/
Without having more time debugging why I can't reproduce atm I'd need to ask
you (or others) to debug what the missing new bit might be to fix up xenial.

  I am using autofs to access shares on a Windows XP machine from a

  EDIT: confirmed with similar configuration on Intrepid with a NetApp
  filer hosting NFS. Server OS removed from summary.

  When I first try to access the mount point via cd or in Konqueror it
  does not exist. However, if I then restart autofs
  (/etc/init.d/autofs restart) everythin then works OK. My config files

  [Impact]

   * A bug exists in Proftpd version 1.3.5a. which causes FTP sessions
  to fail or timeout with strict clients

   * The package, as published in LTS, does not comply with the FTP
  protocol

   * Ported upstream patch and test changes

  [Test Case]

   * Connect to an affected server with ftptest.net

   * Prior to the patch, it will fail to perform an MLSD command with an
  explicit error and explanation

   * After the patch, this works as expected

  [Regression Potential]

   * Failures in SSL connection handling

  A bug exists in Proftpd version 1.3.5a. which causes ssl sessions to
  fail or timeout with some clients

  Excerpt from http://bugs.proftpd.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4202

  Server seems to send an improperly formatted response causing some clients to
  time out.

  Log from ftptest.net:
  [snip]
  Command: TYPE I
  Reply: 200 Type set to I
  Command: EPSV
  Reply: 229 Entering Extended Passive Mode (|||45766|)
  Command: MLSD
  Status: Data connection established.
  Reply: 150 Opening BINARY mode data connection for MLSD
  Error: Malformed directory listing
  Error: Line feed received without preceding carriage return

  This bug has been fixed upstream in version 1.3.5b I recommend getting
  this fixed this is causing a lot of havoc with my servers I've had to
  delay my rollout of 16.04 because of this.
