Title:
  Support Japanese new era "令和 (Reiwa)"

Status in Takao Fonts:
  New
Status in fonts-takao package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged
Status in fonts-takao source package in Xenial:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  [Background]
  Many packages are affected by the requirement to support the new era "Reiwa"
(令和)

  [Impact]
  Users who run Ubuntu in Japanese.

  [Test cases]

  == Character maps / font support ==

  1) Search for character "SQUARE ERA NAME"
  2) Verify that the results include at least "SQUARE ERA NAME HEISEI" and
"SQUARE ERA NAME REIWA" (there should also be Syouwa, Taisyou and Meizi), and
that the glyphs are readable:

   - SQUARE ERA NAME HEISEI: ㍻
   - SQUARE ERA NAME REIWA: 令和 (in a single glyph)

  Display of the Reiwa square glyph is font-specific; it may show simply
  as a empty square or a square with hex characters. If that is the
  case, the unicode data supports the new character, but the selected
  font does not include the new glyph.

  == Typing / input methods ==

  1) Type in 'heisei'
  2) Verify that the input method in use gives you an option "平成", and
optionally also the square era glyph.
  3) Type in 'reiwa'
  4) Verify that the input method in use gives you an option that includes
"令和", and possibly also the square era glyph (if supported for Heisei)

  5) Type in the following strings, and verify that the options are provided in
the input method:
  * "れいわ"(reiwa) => "令和"
  * "れいわ"(reiwa) => "㋿"
  * "2018ねん"(2018nenn) => "平成三十年"
  * "2019ねん"(2019nenn) => "平成三十一年"
  * "2019ねん"(2019nenn) => "令和元年"
  * "2020ねん"(2020nenn) => "令和二年"

  [Regression potential]
  This is a potentially large change as it impacts font display, character sets
as well as date conversions. As such, extreme care should be taken to ensure
that regressions are avoided, such that dates previous to May 1, 2019 continue
to display as before, and dates onward are displayed with the new era symbols.
The included test cases account for verifying the continued behavior or
previous dates.

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1838467] [NEW] Xenial update: 4.4.186 upstream stable release

2019-07-30 Thread Connor Kuehl
Public bug reported:

SRU Justification

Impact:
   The upstream process for stable tree updates is quite similar
   in scope to the Ubuntu SRU process, e.g., each patch has to
   demonstrably fix a bug, and each patch is vetted by upstream
   by originating either directly from a mainline/stable Linux tree or
   a minimally backported form of that patch. The following upstream
   stable patches should be included in the Ubuntu kernel:

   4.4.186 upstream stable release

** Affects: linux (Ubuntu)

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1836760] Re: ixgbe{vf} - Physical Function gets IRQ when VF checks link state

2019-07-30 Thread Guilherme G. Piccoli
I've validated the -proposed kernels for Xenial (4.4.0-158), Bionic (4.15.0-56)
and Disco (5.0.0-22), using the test case mentioned in the description. All
working fine, the issue is gone.
Also, the patch was released upstream in the 5.3.x series, so I'll mark
ff-series as Released.

  ixgbe{vf} - Physical Function gets IRQ when VF checks link state

Bug description:
  [Impact]

  * Intel NICs that are SR-IOV capable and are managed by ixgbe driver presents
a potentially harmful behavior when the ixgbevf-managed VFs (Virtual Functions)
perform an ethtool link check. The ixgbevf driver issues a mailbox command in
the ethtool link state handler, which induces one IRQ in the PF (Physical
Function) per link check.

  * This was reported as a sort of "denial-of-service" from a guest; due to
some link check loop running inside a guest with PCI-PT of a ixgbevf-managed
VF, the host received a huge amount of IRQs causing soft-lockups.

  * The patch proposed in this SRU request fix this behavior by relying in the
saved link state (obtained in the ixgbevf's watchdog routine) instead of
issuing a mailbox command to the PF in every link state check request. The
commit is available on Linus tree: 1e1b0c658d9b ("ixgbevf: Use cached link
state instead of re-reading the value for ethtool")
  http://git.kernel.org/linus/1e1b0c658d9b

  [Test case]

  Reproducing the behavior is pretty simple; having a machine with an
  Intel NIC managed by ixgbe, proceed with the following steps:

  a) Create one or more VFs
  (echo 1 > /sys/class/net//device/sriov_numvfs)

  b) In a different terminal, monitor the non-TxRx PF IRQs:
  (watch -n1 "cat /proc/interrupts | grep  | grep -v Tx")

  c) Run "ethtool " in a loop

  Without the hereby proposed patch, the PF IRQs will increase.

  [Regression potential]

  The patch scope is restricted to ixgbevf ethtool link-check procedure,
  and was developed by the vendor itself. Being a self-contained patch
  affecting only this driver's ethtool handler, the worst potential
  regression would be a wrong link state report.

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1790657] Re: [SRU] amqp-tools server parameter unusable

Bug description:
  [Impact]
  The --server and -url parameters do not function as documented, due to an
upstream coding error that was fixed in release 0.8.1.

  [Test Case]
  $ sudo apt-get -y install librabbitmq-dev
  $ sudo apt-get -y install amqp-tools

  ### Broken behavior:
  $ sudo amqp-consume --server=foobar:5672 -q queue cat
  both --server and --url options specify server host

  ### Fixed behavior:
  $ sudo apt-add-repository -y ppa:bryce/librabbitmq-sru-1790657
  $ sudo apt-get -y install librabbitmq-dev
  $ sudo amqp-consume --server=foobar:5672 -q queue cat
  Specifying the port number with --server is deprecated
  opening socket to foobar:5672

  [Regression Potential]
  The patch alters C code to change how command line options are processed.
Things to watch for, then, would be mishandling of cli options, or compilation
errors during package build. The changes do not alter input handling at all,
so static testing should give a high degree of confidence of stability. Also,
the alterations are focused on tools, so general operation of librabbitmq
should not be affected in any way by the changes.

  [Fix]
  The upstream patch corrects handling of --server, --url, and other options by
reorganizing the logic flow.

  [Discussion]
  The issue appears not to be a regression from a recent change, but a problem
that has existed for quite a while:

   librabbitmq | 0.0.1.hg216-1 | precise/universe | source
   librabbitmq | 0.4.1-1   | trusty   | source
   librabbitmq | 0.7.1-1   | xenial/universe  | source
   librabbitmq | 0.8.0-1build1 | bionic/universe  | source
   librabbitmq | 0.8.0-1build1 | cosmic/universe  | source
   librabbitmq | 0.9.0-0.2 | disco| source
   librabbitmq | 0.9.0-0.2 | eoan | source

  The fix should be backported to bionic and probably cosmic. Earlier
  releases are probably also affected but probably only worth doing if
  the patch applies cleanly to them.

  [Original Report]
  The version of amqp-tools in 18.04.1 LTS (and 14.04 iirc) has a bug which
renders parts of the cli unusable:

  https://github.com/alanxz/rabbitmq-c/issues/364

  1) 18.04.1 LTS bionic
  2) 0.8.0-1build1
  3) `amqp-consume --server=foobar:5672 -q queue cat` should work
  4) amqp-consume complains that you cannot use --server and --url together

  [Impact]

   * s390x is about to add secure boot features which are implemented by a
 new IPL section

   * Older qemu bootloaders for s390x will stumble over that IPL section and
 be unable to boot.

   * Backport the changes from upstream that make qemu tolerate those
 sections (not the new feature of secure boot, just the avoidance of the
 guest crash on boot)

  [Test Case]

   * Take a signed kernel on s390x (either the one from xnox in comment #19
 or use signtool to create one)
   * Install that kernel in a guest of the qemu that is to be tested
   * Run zipl with --secure 1 to write a secure boot section for sure
   * With an unpatched qemu this would now fail to boot again
   * Install the update to qemu and boot the guest, by skipping the
 "tolerated, but not supported" new section it works again.

  [Regression Potential]

   * If any of the checks goes wrong we might affect booting of guests in a
 negative way. For example it might no more start or load a wrong
 kernel. But since the IPL records written by `zipl` are clearly
 specified that should hopefully not be the case here. The code added
 clearly only skips an additional section that didn't exist before.

  [Other Info]

   * n/a

  Secure boot enablement KVM.
  Will be made available with qemu 4.1

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1832082] Re: bnx2x driver causes 100% CPU load

Cheers,

Guilherme

  bnx2x driver causes 100% CPU load

Bug description:
  [Impact]

  * The PTP feature in bnx2x driver is implemented in a way that if the
  NIC firmware takes some time to perform the timestamping - which is
  observed as a bad register read in bnx2x_ptp_task() - then the ptp
  worker function will reschedule itself indefinitely until the value
  read from the register is meaningful. With that behavior, if an
  userspace tool request a bad configured RX filter to bnx2x (or if NIC
  firmware has any other issue in timestamping), the function
  bnx2x_ptp_task() will be rescheduled forever and cause a unbound
  resource consumption. This manifests as a kworker thread consuming
  100% of CPU.

  * The dmesg log will show the following message regarding other packets being
skipped on timestamp routine due to a packet getting stuck in the timestamping
"pipeline":

  "bnx2x: [bnx2x_start_xmit:3862(eno4)]The device supports only a single
  outstanding packet to timestamp, this packet will not be timestamped"

  Also, by using ftrace user can notice that function bnx2x_ptp_task()
  is being called a lot, and by enabling bnx2x PTP debugging log
  (ethtool -s msglvl 16777216) it's possible to observe the
  following message flooding the kernel log:

  "bnx2x: [bnx2x_ptp_task:15242(eno4)]There is no valid Tx timestamp
  yet"

  * The patch proposed in this SRU request is accepted upstream and is
available currently (2019-07-03) in David Miller's linux-net tree:
  git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/davem/net.git/commit/?id=3c91f25c2f72
  Besides fixing the issue, it also adds an ethtool statistics for accounting
the ptp errors and reduces message flooding in case of errors.

  [Test case]

  Reproducing the problem is not difficult; we've used chrony in Bionic
  to trigger the problem. The steps are:

  a) Install chrony on Bionic in a system with working NIC managed by
  bnx2x;

  b) Edit chrony configuration and add: "hwtimestamp *" to the top of
  its conf file;

  c) Restart chrony service

  Check dmesg for the "[...]single outstanding packet" message and the
  overall CPU workload using a tool like "top" to observe a kthread
  consuming 100% of CPU.

  [Regression potential]

  The patch scope is restricted to bnx2x ptp handler, and was validated
  by the driver maintainer. If there's any possibility of regressions,
  we believe the worst would be an issue affecting the packet
  timestamping, not messing with the regular xmit path for the driver.

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   * Some graphical apps such as gedit complain about not being able to
  start dbus using dbus-launch when they are started from the WSL Ubuntu
  terminal because dbus-x11 is not installed.

  [Test Case]

   * Test if ubuntu-wsl recommends dbus-x11 (check the version to be verified):
 $ apt-cache show ubuntu-wsl=1.435 | grep dbus
  Recommends: dbus-x11

  [Regression Potential]

   * Recommending the new dbus-x11 package comes with an increased
  installation size, but this is accepted to make the WSL experience
  more pleasant.

  This issue was spotted with a KVM node running Xenial KVM kernel, it

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1827884] Re: x86: mm: early boot problem on i386 with KPTI enabled

2019-07-30 Thread Juerg Haefliger
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1838115 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1838115

Dima, in comment #75 you mentioned that you experienced issues with
Xenial. What kernel version were you running? We believe this issue is
tied to PTI for 32-bit but that feature was only backported to the 4.15
kernel, not the 4.4. kernel.

** No longer affects: linux (Ubuntu Xenial)

Title:
  x86: mm: early boot problem on i386 with KPTI enabled

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in linux source package in Bionic:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
  [Impact]

  Commit d653420532d580156c8486686899ea6a9eeb7bf0 in bionic enabled
  kernel page table isolation for x86_32, but also introduced
  regressions. One of them ("BUG_ON() condition in vmalloc_sync_one()")
  has been addressed by bug 1830433, but there are other issues reported
  on i386.

  Specifically on some i386 systems the kernel seems to fail in the
  early stage of boot (black screen and frozen keyboard) with no error
  reported on the console.

  If the kernel is booted with "mitigations=off" and "nopti" the problem
  doesn't happen (that is a clear indication of being a kernel page
  table isolation issue).

  However, users have been reported positive results with the following
  upstream fixes applied (all clean cherry picks), even with mitigations
  *and* kernel page table isolation enabled.

  [Test Case]

  Unfortuantely this problem is not easily reproducible, the kernel
  simply fails to boot (black screen and frozen keyboard) after the GRUB
  prompt, so we don't have a real test case (except asking the bug
  reporters to boot the kernel and see if it works).

  [Fix]

  The following upstream fix seems to resolve (prevent) the problem:

  1d8ca3be86ebc6a38dad8236f45c7a9c61681e78 x86/mm/fault: Allow stack access
below %rsp
  aa37c51b9421d66f7931c5fdcb9ce80c450974be x86/mm: Break out user address space
handling
  8fed6239058adfd8b663344e2f448aed1e7a x86/mm: Break out kernel address
space handling
  164477c2331be75d9bd57fb76704e676b2bcd1cd x86/mm: Clarify hardware vs.
software "error_code"
  0e664eee65337082be49fbbd2ee24aa0d111d0f2 Revert "perf/core: Make sure the
ring-buffer is mapped in all page-tables"

  [Regression Potential]

  All upstream fixes, tested on the affected platform, backport changes
  are minimal.

  [Original bug report]

  NOTE: Boot problems on TWO different laptops after Software Updater
  updated to kernel 4.15.0-48

  Both laptops running Ubuntu 18.04.2LTS i386/32bit with Xubuntu
  desktop. Both fresh installs from minimal CD in early April,
  originally kernel 0.4.15.0-47, both working fine.

  Bug report filed on THIS MACHINE:
  HP Compag 6710b, Intel Core2 Duo T7100 @ 1.8GHz, RAM 4GB, with Intel
integrated graphics controller GM965/GL960 (with kernel command line parameter
¨video=SVIDEO-1:d¨)

  SYMPTOM:
  4.15.0-48 requires a second ´recovery´ boot to get it up and running.
  Will not boot properly after a normal shutdown - screen goes funny and it
hangs
  Does boot successfully after a hard shutdown - detects improper shutdown,
loads grub menu, then boot successfully

  Boot problem appeared after update from kernel version 4.15.0-47 to 4.15.0-48
  Problem occurs in 4.15.0-48 kernel, but not in 4.15.0-47 (which still boots
normally after a normal shutdown)

  OTHER MACHINE:
  Even older!!! ASUS W1N Pentium M banias 1.7gHz, 1.5GB RAM, ATI Mobility
Radeon 9600 GPU. Running with command line parameter "forcepae".
  SYMPTOM:
  Won't boot at all.
  Was working fine under 4.15.0-47 as originally installed, until software
updater installed 4.15.0-48. Now it won't boot (hangs, black screen), and I
can't even get into the grub menu to try the older kernel.

  More Info on what I've already tried for troubleshooting (on the
  HP6710b) is outlined in
  https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/680486

  Happy to provide more info if needed, but I'm just an end user user
  and new to Linux, so will be on a learning curve at this end. (and
  apologies in advance if this a user problem, and not an actual bug).
  Thanks
