Status in Ubuntu Cloud Archive:

Status in neutron package in Ubuntu:

Status in neutron source package in Xenial:

Bug description:
The current implementation of bandwidth limiting rules only supports egress
bandwidth
  limiting.

  Use cases
  =
There are cases where ingress bandwidth limiting is more important than
egress limiting, for example when the workload of the cloud is mostly a
consumer of data (crawlers, datamining, etc), and administrators need to ensure
other workloads won't be affected.

Other example are CSPs which need to plan & allocate the bandwidth
provided to customers, or provide different levels of network service.

  API/Model impact
  ===
The BandwidthLimiting rules will be added a direction field (egress/ingress),
which by default will be egress to match the current behaviour and, therefore
  be backward compatible.

Combining egress/ingress would be achieved by including an egress
bandwidth limit and an ingress bandwidth limit.

  [Impact]

In parallel builds where a list of image targets are provided, the build
may produce binaries that are not part of the named set of targets but
are created by series dependencies. These implicitly created binaries
may be generated by multiple builds but are unused as our convention for
the ubuntu-cpc project is to only consume binaries from the explicitly
named image targets; this avoids overwriting the same object by multiple
parallel builds. The problem is that as we build out parallel jobs for
a number of image targets (multiplied by each supported architecture)
we're wasting a lot of resources.

  [Test Case]

   * Specify an image target within the ubuntu-cpc project for a build

   * Observe artifacts in addition to the ones for the named image
  target are produced and downloaded

  [Regression Potential]

   * An artifact from an explicitly named artifact is missing and builds
will begin to remove desired output. Testing is being done to address
  this regression.

  [Other Info]

   * This has been running in production in Eoan for a few weeks and
we're satisfied with the results. We have seen overall time reduced
  by 20-50% on some builds.

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1802585] Re: NFS v4.0: Stale data after file is renamed while another process has an open file handle

2019-08-26 Thread Bryan Quigley
I was able to reproduce this. Minor note, that you need to specify
vers=4.0 in the mount options, nfs 4.1+ appears to not be affected by
this.

NOTE: This bug has been fixed in the upstream mainline kernel via

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?h=be189f7e7f03de35887e5a85ddcf39b91b5d7fc1

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?h=c7a2c49ea6c9eebbe44ff2c08b663b2905ee2c13.

The full patchset is here: https://marc.info/?l=linux-
  nfs=153816500525563=2

I'm repeating the report I sent to the NFS maintainers on the mailing
  list:

On Ubuntu 16.04 (4.4.0-130) with NFS v4.0, I'm seeing an issue where
stale data is shown if a file remains open on one machine, and the
file is overwritten via a rename() on another. Here's my test:

  1. On node A, create two different files on a shared NFS mount:
  "test1.txt" and "test2.txt".
  2. On node B, continuously show the contents of the first file: "while
  true; do cat test1.txt; done"
  3. On node B, run a process that keeps "test1.txt" open. For example,
  with Python, run:
   f = open('/nfs-mount/test1.txt', 'r')
  4. Rename test2.txt via "mv -f test2.txt test1.txt"

On node B, I see the contents of the original test1.txt indefinitely,
even after I disabled attribute caching and the lookup cache. I can
make the while loop in step 2 show the new content if I perform one of
  these actions:

  1. Run "ls /nfs-mount"
  2. Close the open file in step 3

The CHECKSUM target does not support GSO skbs, and when a GSO skb is
passed to skb_checksum_help(), it errors out and
  skb_warn_bad_offload() is called.

The above call trace was found in a customer environment which has an
Openstack deployment, with the following sorts of iptables rules set:

  -A neutron-l3-agent-POSTROUTING -o qr-+ -p tcp -m tcp --sport 9697 -j
CHECKSUM --checksum-fill
  -A neutron-dhcp-age-POSTROUTING -p udp -m udp --dport 68 -j CHECKSUM
--checksum-fill

This was causing haproxy running on the node to crash and restart
every time a GSO skb was processed by the CHECKSUM target.

I recommend reading the netdev mailing list thread for more details:
  https://www.spinics.net/lists/netdev/msg517366.html

  [Fix]

This was fixed in 4.19 upstream with the below commit:

  commit 10568f6c5761db24249c610c94d6e44d5505a0ba
  Author: Florian Westphal
  Date: Wed Aug 22 11:33:27 2018 +0200
Subject: netfilter: xt_checksum: ignore gso skbs

This commit adds a check to see if the current skb is a gso skb, and
if it is, skips skb_checksum_help(). It then continues on to check if
the packet uses udp, and if it does, exits early. Otherwise it prints
a single warning that CHECKSUM should be avoided, and if really
needed, only for use with outbound udp.

  Note, 10568f6c5761db24249c610c94d6e44d5505a0ba was included in
upstream stable version 4.18.13, and was backported to bionic in
  4.15.0-58.64 by LP #1836426.

This patch required minor backporting for 4.4, by slightly adjusting
the context in the final patch hunk.

  [Testcase]

You can reproduce this by adding the following iptables rule to the
  mangle table:

  -t mangle -A POSTROUTING -p tcp -m tcp --sport 80 -j CHECKSUM
  --checksum-fill

and running traffic over port 80 with incorrect checksums in the ip
  header.

I built a test kernel, which is available here:

  https://launchpad.net/~mruffell/+archive/ubuntu/sf216537-test

For unpatched kernels, this causes the process which was handling the
socket to crash, as seen by haproxy crashing on a node in production
  which hits this issue.

On patched kernels you see the below warning printed to dmesg and no
  crashes occur.

xt_CHECKSUM: CHECKSUM should be avoided. If really needed, restrict
with "-p udp" and only use in OUTPUT

  [Regression Potential]

The changes are limited only to users which have CHECKSUM rules
enabled in their iptables configs. Openstack commonly configures such
rules on deployment, even though they are not necessary, as almost all
packets have their checksum calculated by NICs these days, and
CHECKSUM is only around to service old dhcp clients which would
discard UDP packets with empty checksums.

This commit was selected for upstream -stable 4.18.13, and has made
its way into bionic 4.15.0-58.64 by LP #1836426. There have been no
reported problems and those kernels would have had sufficient testing
with Openstack and its configured iptables rules.
