[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1833137] Re: Landscape-client service fails to stop on disco+

2019-09-09 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package landscape-client - 18.01-0ubuntu3.4

---
landscape-client (18.01-0ubuntu3.4) bionic; urgency=medium

  * d/p/product-name-vminfo-1828217.patch: Add product_name to things scanned
for vm_info (LP: #1828217)
  * d/landscape-client.postinst: Set default value if data_path is

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   * With dpkg>=1.19.3 (disco, eoan) landscape-client init script fails when
 stopping.

   * This adds a process-name matching when calling start-stop-daemon --stop,
 making matching restrictive enough to satisfy start-stop-daemon.

  [Test Case]

   * apt install landscape-client && landscape-config

   * /etc/init.d/landscape-client stop

   * expect success from /etc/init.d/landscape-client status

  [Regression Potential]

   * The change has been limited to the init script stop operation
 to keep changes to a minimum.

   * The patch uses the 15char-truncated process name, as is exposed by current
linux kernels.
 Changes in the linux kernel would create a regression equal to the
current/unpatched state.

  [Other Info]

   * The proposed change is not currently upstream as code is being migrated to
systemd.

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1835818] Re: snmpd causes autofs mount points to be mounted on service start/restart

2019-09-09 Thread Łukasz Zemczak
Hello Ioanna, or anyone else affected,

Accepted net-snmp into disco-proposed. The package will build now and be
available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/net-snmp/5.7.3+dfsg-
5ubuntu1.2 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested and change the tag from
verification-needed-disco to verification-done-disco. If it does not fix
the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag
to verification-failed-disco. In either case, without details of your
testing we will not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification .  Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in
-proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

   Status: Fix Released => Fix Committed

Bug description:
  [Impact]

  Autofs direct map triggers are visible in /etc/mtab.
  On boot, when snmpd starts, it iterates over the entries in /etc/mtab and
performs statfs() on them.
  This trigger automount to mount autofs mounts even if the user does not
explicitly access them.

  However this happens only if autofs service is started before snmpd.
  If snmpd stars first /etc/mtab is not yet populated with autofs mounts and
therefore
  are not mounted.

  When there a few autofs mount points the impact is insignificant.
  However when there are thousands of them, this causes unnecessary overhead on
operations
  such as df.
  This also delays the system shutdown time since everything needs to be
unmounted.

  [Test Case]

  *** Test Case 1 - During boot:

  The user that brought this issue to our attention would observe all autofs
mounts
  be mounted at boot, because in their environment autofs would start first.

  In my environment snmpd starts first so to reproduce I had to add a small
delay in
  snmpd init script.

  In /etc/init.d/snmp :
  @@ -36,6 +36,8 @@ cd /

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   * Restarting hosts/clouds of multiple VMs or containers managed by
 landscape leads to synchronized monitoring tasks. This can generate
 significant recurring load.

   * The fix adds a configurable randomized interval to scheduled tasks.

  [Test Case]

  sudo landscape-config --stagger-launch 0.5 --log-level debug
  # accept client in server interface
  sudo tail -f /var/log/landscape/monitor.log
  # Check for debug log entries mentioning monitors getting delayed

  [Regression Potential]

   * Although changing the scheduler for non-fixed loop intervals could
 have been slightly better at avoid load peaks on shared hosts, the
 current approach has been deemed safer as it simply adds an initial
 delay to tasks. The current logic of scheduling is unchanged.

   * External scripts expecting monitors to run instantly on
 landscape-client restart could be affected. I'm not aware of
 any such case, as the async nature of the code never made that
 guarantee.

   * The stagger interval is configurable with a flag and a configuration
 entry to work around regressions.

  [Original Description]

  The various intervals appear to be statically determined from program
  start. As a practical example, a rebooted VM host with a large number
  of guests means all the guests start landscape-client at about the
  same time. Then every 30 minutes, package-monitor runs (which is a
  rather heavy operation). Multiply by a hundred or so and you've got a
  large flood on the host.

  When the client starts up, it would be good to have the initial
  schedule for each timer be ((interval / 2) + random(interval)), so the
  collective load is spread out over the entire interval.

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   * Some KVM hypervisors are incorrectly detected by landscape-client,
 thus making it impossible to make use of VM license seats.

   * This upload extend the scanning to additional sys/class/dmi/id fields
 for known VM markers

  [Test Case]

  The issue can be reproduced on libvirt/kvm.

  uvt-kvm create vm
  virsh edit vm

  ...

  ...

  my fancy cloud
  my fancy KVM

  my fancy cloud

  virsh destroy vm && virsh start vm
  uvt-kvm ssh vm --insecure
  sudo landscape-config --log-level=debug -a devel --silent -t testclient
  # will fail registering, but that's not relevant to the vm-type detection
  grep vm-info /var/log/landscape/broker.log
  # expected output is "KVM", and will be empty because of this bug

  [Regression Potential]

   * The change is simple and scans an additional file for vm info.
 It's very similar to previous patches and is unlikely to regress.

   * Assuming this patch goes wrong, false positives may be detected as
 KVM. This would have minimal user impact VM can be used on full seats.

  [Impact]

   * With dpkg>=1.19.3 (disco, eoan) landscape-client init script fails when
 stopping.

   * This adds a process-name matching when calling start-stop-daemon --stop,
 making matching restrictive enough to satisfy start-stop-daemon.

  [Test Case]

   * apt install landscape-client && landscape-config

   * /etc/init.d/landscape-client stop

   * expect success from /etc/init.d/landscape-client status

  [Regression Potential]

   * The change has been limited to the init script stop operation
 to keep changes to a minimum.

   * The patch uses the 15char-truncated process name, as is exposed by current
linux kernels.
 Changes in the linux kernel would create a regression equal to the
current/unpatched state.

  [Other Info]

   * The proposed change is not currently upstream as code is being migrated to
systemd.

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   * Manually editing landscape client.conf to unset the data_path
 blocks upgrade postinst. That field was not required to be present
 before 14.04, and older configurations can fail to upgrade without
 purging the existing configuration.

   * Although data_path is set by default, removing the line is accepted
 by landscape and it will use a default path. The fix simply makes sure
 the postinst script also has that default.

  [Test Case]

   * sed -i -e '/data_path/d' /etc/landscape/client.conf

   * apt install --reinstall landscape-client

  [Regression Potential]

   * The change is fairly trivial. Regression could be possible if the
 default paths were changed and not reflected in the postinst.
 In such a case the resync flag file wouldn't be created,
 resulting in an out-of-sync list of users; this would be low impact.

  [Original Description]

  Tested on 14.04.5, landscape-client (14.12-0ubuntu6.14.04).

  If the data_path directive is not present in /etc/landscape/client.conf, the
postinst script will fail with the following error:
  Setting up landscape-client (14.12-0ubuntu6.14.04) ...
  install: missing file operand
  Try 'install --help' for more information.
  dpkg: error processing package landscape-client (--configure):
   subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
  Errors were encountered while processing:
   landscape-client
  E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

  Relevant section of the postinst script:
   # In response to bug 1508110 we need to trigger a complete update of
  # user information. The flag file will be removed by the client when
  # the update completes.
  DATA_PATH="`grep ^data_path /etc/landscape/client.conf | cut -d= -f2
| tr -d '[[:space:]]'`"
  install --owner=landscape --directory $DATA_PATH
  USER_UPDATE_FLAG_FILE="$DATA_PATH/user-update-flag"
  install --owner=landscape /dev/null $USER_UPDATE_FLAG_FILE

  It would be helpful if the script checked for data_path's existence
  and emitted a more informative error message.

  How to reproduce:

  Install/configure/register landscape-client.
  Remove landscape-client
  Remove data_path from /etc/landscape/client.conf
  Reinstall landscape-client.

Bug description:
  If Ubuntu/Canonical's FIPS-compliant OpenSSL is initialized with
  SSL_library_init, then Python2's hashlib bindings for MD5 can trigger
  a SIGSEGV via a NULL pointer dereference (if calling the .update
  method) or a SIGABRT (if passing input to the constructor or passing
  no input and invoking the .final method). This happens if, for
  example, PyOpenSSL is imported before hashlib.

  Canonical's FIPS patches for OpenSSL introduce some odd behavior that
  arguably should be revisited, but the (TL;DR) core bug is that Python2
  hashlib doesn't properly check the return value of EVP_DigestInit,
  preventing hashlib from falling back to it's internal MD5
  implementation and instead setting things up for use of the MD5
  context to trigger SIGSEGV or SIGABRT.

  Python3 correctly checks the return value, so the fix is to backport
  the relevant code into Python2 (see
  python2.7-2.7.12/Modules/_hashopenssl.c).

  See attached good.py and bad.py files which exhibit the import order-
  dependent crashing issue. See attached fips-md5-python-init-bug.c
  which shows the FIPS OpenSSL behaviors that conditionally tickle the
  Python2 bug. The C file also contains a much more detailed description
  of the Python2 bug and other behavior which I'd rather not repeat
  here.

  I discovered this bug investigating an issue with the third-party apt-
  boto-s3 package. See https://github.com/boto/boto3/issues/2021

Bug description:
  [Impact]
  There is a timeout bug in the openvpn-auth-ldap package that causes
  OpenVPN to crash when the network timeout is exceeded.

  The openvpn-auth-ldap plugin is not correctly checking the error codes
  from ldap_result. As a result, it is not catching timeouts, and
  proceeds as if ldap_result was successful. This results in a segfault
  when access to the result (which is set to Null) is attempted.

  Network timeouts are somewhat common and services should be resilient
  to it. Having a service as a whole crash because of such an occurrence
  is not acceptable.

  This upload fixes the problem by simply including the timeout error
  case in an existing check. It was clearly just an oversight in that
  one call, as the remainder of the code does handle timeout errors. It
  was just never reached.

  [Test Case]
  To reproduce the problem in an openvpn server:
  * install openvpn and openvpn-auth-ldap:
  $ sudo apt install openvpn openvpn-auth-ldap

  * expand the attached openvpn-test-server.tar.gz tarball inside /etc:
  $ sudo tar -C /etc -xzf openvpn-test-server.tar.gz

  * start nc on port 389:
  $ sudo nc -l -p 389

  * In another terminal, start the openvpn server:
  $ cd /etc/openvpn
  $ sudo openvpn --config server.conf

  Next you will need an openvpn client, also configured with the SSL certs
  as usual, plus "auth-user-pass". This client can be the same for all server
tests, if you are testing multiple Ubuntu releases, since what crashes is the
server. It also doesn't have to be the fixed package from proposed.

  * Install openvpn:
  $ sudo apt install openvpn

  * Expand the client tarball in /etc:
  $ sudo tar -C /etc -xzf openvpn-test-client.tar.gz

  * Edit /etc/openvpn/client.conf and change the "remote "
  line to point to your openvpn server's hostname

  * Start the client:
  $ cd /etc/openvpn
  $ sudo openvpn --config client.conf

  * It will prompt you for username and password. The values you provide are
irrelevant:
  (...)
  Enter Auth Username: asd
  Enter Auth Password: ***

  The vulnerable server will crash:
  root@trusty-openvpn-1602813:/etc/openvpn$ sudo openvpn --config server.conf

  [Regression Potential]
  The patch is very focused. I believe the biggest regression potential lies in
the fact that this package hasn't been rebuilt very often. This new build will
be done with the surrounding system libraries having changed a lot since the
last time this package was built.

  [Other Info]
  There are two places in the code which mishandled the return code of
ldap_result(). They are essentially identical, but the test case I provided
only covers one of them. I believe that to be good enough, as the other code
path will require setting up an LDAP server with a populated directory.

Bug description:
  [Impact]

  sosreport 3.8 has been released including further enhancements in core
sosreport functionality:
  https://github.com/sosreport/sos/releases/tag/3.8

  It would be great to find sosreport v3.8 in supported stable releases,
  considering the fact that the release (especially LTSes) will be
  supported for a couple of years still:

  sosreport is widely use by Canonical support team to troubleshoot UA
  customer, other vendors and community users. These improvement will
  benefit all of them.

  sosreport 3.8 contains a number of enhancements, new features, and bug
  fixes. (See "Release Note" below)

  Just like we did for :
  - v3.5 (LP: #1734983)
  - v3.6 (LP: #1775195)

  [Test Case]

   * Install sosreport
   * Run sosreport
     - sosreport plugins are separated by subject (juju, MAAS, grub, zfs,...)
and allow the capability to detect (based on file and package) if it exist
and/or installed and then only run the necessary plugins based on the detection
made.

  It creates a files under /tmp in the form of :
  /tmp/sosreport-sos37xenial-20190416160152.tar.xz # Actual sosreport
  /tmp/sosreport-sos37X-20190416160152.tar.xz.md5  # MD5 checksum

  Only accessible by root user:
  -rw--- 1 root root 1619000 Apr 16 16:07
/tmp/sosreport-sos37X-20190416160152.tar.xz

  Ideally, since we can't test all plugins, it would be good to have a
  few testers using different HW, kernel, installation with a focus on
  juju, MAAS, LXD, canonical-livepatch,

  Looking for any error on the terminal while sosreport is running or
  post-sosreport run in /tmp/sosreport-*/sos_logs/

  [Regression Potential]

   * Risk is low.

   * We did some dogfooding on sosreport, but we can't test each
  individual plugins and scenarios one by one, that would just be
  impossible but we have tested the ones we considered important and
  Ubuntu/Canonical related (canonical-livepatch, MAAS, juju, snappy),
  Openstack, mandatory file (logs, dmidecode, installed-debs and so on)

   * Plugin bug is an eventuality, but they are usually easy to fix and
  the impact will be isolated to the plugin itself or section of the
  plugin. If a plugin has a bug the worst that could happen is that this
  particular plugin won't (or partially) collect information.

  [Other information]

  * Release note:
  https://github.com/sosreport/sos/releases/tag/3.8

  * Plugins:
  sosreport contains in total: 284 plugins

  - 185 plugins that used UbuntuPlugin and/or DebianPlugin that might
  been triggered at sosreport run.

  - 97 plugins not using UbuntuPlugin and/or DebianPlugin. Basically
  useless in a Ubuntu context.
