Title:
Output switches from HDMI speakers to internal speakers on DPMS off

Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu:
  New
Status in pulseaudio source package in Xenial:
  In Progress

Bug description:
  PulseAudio 8.0 includes a well-known user-experience regression: Its
new auto-routing algorithm tries to switch to another output, as soon
as the active output gets disconnected. This leads to the following
  bad user experience:

  (1) Alice listens to music on her speakers, which are connected to the
screen, which is connected through HDMI to the computer.

  (2) Alice leaves the computer, the screen gets suspended (DPMS off).

  (3) PulseAudio sees that the HDMI output got disconnected (although
only for a short interval) and switches to internal speaker.

  (4) Alice returns to the computer but finds that the music is now
  playing through the internal speakers.

  (5) Alice can switch the output to the HDMI speakers manually, but the
above user experience bug will reoccur when she leaves the computer
  again.

This is a well-known upstream bug that was fixed in PulseAudio 9.0.
Due to the fact that Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS uses PulseAudio 8.0, it is
desirable to backport this fix to PulseAudio 8.0, so that all LTS
users have better experience. Upstream said they would not do this and
that I should report this to Ubuntu directly.

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1603222] Re: Azure: incorrect entry in fstab for ephemeral disk

Status in cloud-init:
  Fix Committed
Status in cloud-init package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in cloud-init source package in Precise:
  Confirmed
Status in cloud-init source package in Trusty:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  [Impact]
There is a chance that Azure users' ephemeral disks will not be mounted
properly if the device names change after a reboot.

  [Test Case]

  1) Provision an Ubuntu VM on Azure (I tested with 14.04.4)
  2) The fstab entry for the ephemeral disk (/mnt) correctly points to
/dev/disk/cloud/azure_resource
  3) Reboot the VM (sudo reboot)
  4) The fstab entry still points to /dev/disk/cloud/azure_resource (and not
/dev/sdb)

  [Regression Potential]

This introduces new udev rules to the cloud-init package. These will
only cause entries to appear on Azure. It also makes a minor change
to how cloud-init will write to /etc/fstab on Azure.

Both of these changes will have no impact outside of Azure, and are
  the intended behaviour on Azure.

  [Original Bug Report]

During provisioning cloud-init adds an entry for the ephemeral disk in
/etc/fstab. After provisioning this entry is correct and points to
"/dev/disk/azure/resource-part1". This symlink is created dynamically
  by 66-azure-storage.rules.

For some reason after the first reboot cloud-init overwrites the fstab
entry and changes the "/dev/disk/azure/resource-part1" to the device
name that it points to, i.e. /dev/sdb1. However, this is incorrect
since /dev/sd* device names are not persistent.

  Repro:

  1) Provision an Ubuntu VM on Azure (I tested with 14.04.4)
  2) The fstab entry for the ephemeral disk (/mnt) correctly points to
"/dev/disk/azure/resource-part1".
  3) Reboot the VM (sudo reboot)
  4) The fstab entry now incorrectly points to /dev/sdb1 instead of the symlink.

  Impact:
There is a chance that the customer's ephemeral disk will not be mounted
properly if the device names change after a reboot.

Bug description:
  With the ubuntu-archive-publishing change in
  https://code.launchpad.net/~xnox/ubuntu-archive-publishing/migrate-
dist-upgrade-to-4k/+merge/311181 the signing process for the dist-
upgrader tarball has been changed. This change should be tested now,
rather than doing an ubuntu-release-upgrader change months from now
and wondering why things aren't working (if they are broken).

Due to the way the gpg signature is generated we can't just remove it
and have it regenerated as the timestamp for the signature will not
change, so the change will not propogate to the mirrors. Hence the
need for a mostly no change (mirrors and demotions may change) upload
  of ubuntu-release-upgrader.

  Test Case
  -
  1) run do-release-upgrade -p --frontend DistUpgradeViewText
  2) ensure the tarball for the next release e.g. xenial.tar.gz is downloaded
and the signature verification passes

  Regression Potential

It's possible the signing is wrong and the verification of the signature will
fail thereby causing release upgrades to be impossible.

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1647376] Re: docker should not de-configure pre-existing bridge interfaces

2016-12-07 Thread Michael Hudson-Doyle
I've included the patch in the version of docker.io that I've just
uploaded to zesty. Once that has hit release I'll also upload it to the
Xenial and Yakkety queues for SRU processing.

Since moving to docker 1.12, management of networks to be used by
docker images is done via "docker network (create/rm)". Currently
docker assumes (for the bridge driver at least) that it has to do full
setup/cleanup of the associated bridge interface. This is fatal for
those cases where an existing bridge interface is used to declare the
  network to docker.

This is fixed in docker 1.13 by the attached patch (this is a backport
from docker upstream, it applies to yakkety and xenial but has to drop
  one more hunk in zesty).

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1634304] Re: Unable to complete install: 'Couldn't find hvm kernel for Ubuntu tree

2016-12-07 Thread Tyler Hicks
I've uploaded to zesty, yakkety, and xenial. I only made one small
change to the versioning of the yakkety/zesty debdiffs. Dave even asked
me about the proper versioning before I had a chance to notice and we
discussed versioning in #ubuntu-devel. In short, yakkety's version
needed to be 1:1.3.2-3ubuntu3.1 and zesty's version needed to be
1:1.3.2-3ubuntu4.

I did have one question about the upstream patch and left a commit
comment in github:

  https://github.com/virt-manager/virt-
manager/commit/3f15a489cda87f8028828d567848193dd2640a43#commitcomment-20111744

I didn't feel like the open question for upstream should block the
uploads. If needed, we can address the question later before Zesty
releases.

Thanks for the clean debdiffs, Dave!

Bug description:
The Hyper-V netvsc driver was looking at the incorrect status bits
in the checksum info. It was setting the receive checksum unnecessary
flag based on the IP header checksum being correct. The checksum
flag is skb is about TCP and UDP checksum status. Because of this
bug, any packet received with bad TCP checksum would be passed
up the stack and to the application causing data corruption.
The problem is reproducible via netcat and netem.

This had a side effect of not doing receive checksum offload
on IPv6. The driver was also also always doing checksum offload
independent of the checksum setting done via ethtool.

Bug description:
We're finally making progress on the apparmor stacking and snapd in
container front. The next LXD release will include the needed support
as will the kernel soon afterwards.

With that, one can finally get snaps to install inside containers, but
for any of it to work, squashfuse must be present in the container so
that snapd can use it to mount the filesystem.

squashfuse is in the archive and I've contributed support to snapd a
while back, so all that should be needed is for the snapd package to
be updated to depend or at least recommend squashfuse.

Please note this is the first time we are integrating openssl-ibmca,

openssl-ibmca usually requires libica2 and libica-utils for proper

But instead openssl is giving this error, due to a missing "libica.so":

There is no libica.so that is shipped with any of the above packages

  $

So there are right now two workarounds:
  1)
creating a (symbolic) link from libica.so.2 to libica.so, like
  $ sudo ln -s /usr/lib/s390x-linux-gnu/libica.so.2
/usr/lib/s390x-linux-gnu/libica.so
that allows openssl to find a library named 'libica.so':
  18:15:00: frank.hei...@canonical.com: ubuntu@HWE0001:~$ openssl engine
  (dynamic) Dynamic engine loading support
  (ibmca) Ibmca hardware engine support
But this could lead to issues in case of any potential functions or interface
changes there we introduced with libica.so.2
  2)
installation of the "libica-dev" package that provides a (development)
version of libica.so:
  $ dpkg -L libica-dev | grep libica.so

2016-12-07 Thread Tim Gardner
Public bug reported:

Hi team,,

I have a customer, who tried to install Xenial or upgrade to 4.4 kernel with
Trusty on our cloud platform(qemu 1.5.3), reports a defect. he complains that
only one cpu is successfully detected, other cpus is disabled if
he used 4.4 kernel. I tried to bisect Xenial kernel tree, and found that this
bug was introduced by the following commit.

Date: Mon Feb 22 22:19:15 2016 +

x86/topology: Create logical package id

BugLink: http://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1397880

For per package oriented services we must be able to rely on the number of
CPU
packages to be within bounds. Create a tracking facility, which

- calculates the number of possible packages depending on nr_cpu_ids
after boot

- makes sure that the package id is within the number of possible packages.
If
the apic id is outside we map it to a logical package id if there is
enough
  space available.

Provide interfaces for drivers to query the mapping and do translations from
physcial to logical ids.

and then I backported 7b0501b1e7cddd32b265178e32d332bdfbb532d4 from
Linus tree to Xenial kernel, the issue goes away, so could we consider
to backport it to xenial kernel tree to solve this issue in next
release?

  Related bugs:

Bug description:
  [Testcase]
  * configure ibmca engine as per below instructions
  * execute openssl engine -c -
  * it should complete without any loading errors

  [Impact]
  * Out of the box stock configuration results in non-usable engine which
errors out
  * Thus currently, without workarounds, the acceleration engine does not work.
Meaning regression potential is low

Please note this is the first time we are integrating openssl-ibmca,
and it is not enabled by default. Hopefully things will be better /
  more stable going forward.

openssl-ibmca usually requires libica2 and libica-utils for proper
functioning and all required tooling (like icainfo, icastats, etc.)

But after the installation of these packages and the configuration, with is
like this:
  sudo tee -a /etc/ssl/openssl.cnf <
/usr/share/doc/openssl-ibmca/examples/openssl.cnf.sample
  sudo vi /etc/ssl/openssl.cnf
adding the following line as the first active one:
  openssl_conf = openssl_def
and removing or commenting all other occurrences of that line in the config
file
and saving and closing the openssl.cnf file
this output of the openssl engine command is expected:

  $ openssl engine
  (dynamic) Dynamic engine loading support
  (ibmca) Ibmca hardware engine support

or even more precise these chiphers should be listed in case of "-c":

  $ openssl engine -c
  (dynamic) Dynamic engine loading support
  (ibmca) Ibmca hardware engine support
   [RAND, DES-ECB, DES-CBC, DES-OFB, DES-CFB, DES-EDE3, DES-EDE3-CBC,
DES-EDE3-OFB, DES-EDE3-CFB, AES-128-ECB, AES-192-ECB, AES-256-ECB, AES-128-CBC,

AES-192-CFB, AES-256-CFB, SHA1, SHA256, SHA512]

But instead openssl is giving this error, due to a missing "libica.so":
  $ openssl engine

There is no libica.so that is shipped with any of the above packages
(verified with dpkg -l) or otherwise available in the filesystem:
  $ sudo find / -name "libica.so" 2>/dev/null
  ubuntu@HWE0001:~$

But there is a different verison of that libica:
  $ sudo find / -name "*libica.so*" 2>/dev/null
  /usr/lib/s390x-linux-gnu/libica.so.2
  /usr/lib/s390x-linux-gnu/libica.so.2.6.1
  $

So there are right now two workarounds:
  1)
creating a (symbolic) link from libica.so.2 to libica.so, like
  $ sudo ln -s /usr/lib/s390x-linux-gnu/libica.so.2
/usr/lib/s390x-linux-gnu/libica.so
that allows openssl to find a library named 'libica.so':

ipmipower in 1.4.11 and 1.5 lack ipv6 support. This is in-plan for
  1.6 from upstream.

  See also related bug 1645912.

The -h argument to ipmipower needs to be extended to accept
[ip:v6::addr]:port type syntax, and the processing of the hostnames
needs to take into account ipv6 addresses as well.

  [Impact]

   * If a BMC has only IPv6 addresses, then ipmipower cannot discover
  it.

   * MAAS needs to be able to do just that.

  [Test Case]

   * To reproduce / verify the bug, configure a BMC with an IPv6 address, and
     try to talk to it.

  [Regression Potential]

   * If a BMC has both IPv6 and IPv4 addresses in the DNS, and the hostname
is used to control it, then this change will cause ipmipower to try
IPv6 first, where it used to completely ignore IPv6 in the DNS. We
believe this to be the correct behavior and that it does not affect
the current installed base. (IPv6 BMC addresses are not a thing that
we have been able to find anywhere.)

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 918489] Re: duplicity allows bad passphrase on full backup if archive cache exists

Bug description:
when doing a backup for the first time, dejadup verifies your
passphrase by having you enter it twice.

on future incremental backups it doesn't need to do this because
entering the wrong password will result in the backup failing.

with the periodic 'full' backups that happen from time to time,
however, any password will be accepted.

this can lead to a situation where you accidentally type the wrong
password once and are left in a situation where you don't know what
you typed and have no way to get your files (or do another incremental
  backup on top of it).

i think this is what happened to me recently.

clearly, the fix is to explicitly verify the passphrase is correct
when doing a new full backup. this may be a duplicity bug.

  === Ubuntu deja-dup SRU information ===

  [impact]
Users may unwittingly re-set their backup password and not be able to restore
their data.

  [test case]
  - $ deja-dup-preferences # set up a dummy backup
  - $ deja-dup --backup # complete first encrypted full backup
  - $ rename 's/\.2016/\.2000/' /path/to/test/backup/*
  - $ rename 's/\.2016/\.2000/' ~/.cache/deja-dup/*/*
  - $ deja-dup --backup # second backup, enter the wrong password
  - $ deja-dup --restore # try to restore with original password

  [regression potential]
Should be limited? The fix is to delete the duplicity cache files, which
ought to be safe to delete.

  [SRU JUSTIFICATION]

  [Impact]

It has been brought to my attention that Ubuntu kernel 4.4 has a
severe netfilter regression affecting the performance of
"/sbin/iptables" command, especially when adding large number of
policies. My source have documented everything here[2].

Note that the situation can also be reproduce with latest and greatest
  upstream kernel v4.9-rc4.

I was able to reproduce the situation on my side, and a kernel bisect
identified the same offending commit[1] as my source found for this
  bug.

Running the commit right before the offending one have proven to have
  expected performance :

  # commit [71ae0dff] <== Offending commit
  real 0m33.314s
  user 0m1.520s
  sys 0m26.192s

  # commit [d7b59742] <== Right before offending commit
  real 0m5.952s
  user 0m0.124s
  sys 0m0.220s

  [Test Case]

  * Reproducer #1
  $ iptables -F
  $ time (./list-addrs 3000 | xargs -n1 iptables -A FORWARD -j ACCEPT -s)

  * Reproducer #2
  $ iptables -F
  $ time for f in `seq 1 3000` ; do iptables -A FORWARD ; done

"list-addrs" script can be found here[3]

  [Regression Potential]

   * none expected, the patches have been proven to work on mainline
kernel, and was reviewed by a few netfilters maintainer + tested by
  myself.

https://kernel.googlesource.com/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/pablo/nf-next/+/18b61e8161cc308cbfd06d2e2c6c0758dfd925ef

  [Other Info]

  * "iptables-restore" doesn't suffer of that netfilter regression, and
I'm also aware that "iptables-restore" is the favourite approach since
it is way more efficient than iptables that is executed over and over,
once for each policy one want to set, but since "binary
arp/ip/ip6tables" takes vastly longer to perform with that commit, I
think this need to be address anyway.

I've installed Ubuntu 16.04 from the latest ISO and did a "apt update && apt
upgrade" to be certain I use the latest updates.
Then I've installed icingaweb2 via "sudo apt install icingaweb2":

What was still missing after that was mod-php (the issue was a white
page when browsing http:///icingaweb2/). Thus, to get it
working I had to run "sudo apt install libapache2-mod-php".

With that the white page has been resolved but then I got the
  following error:

  Warning: Uncaught ErrorException:

The error is reproducible on all servers that I've tried so far
(installed from scratch or updated from 14.04 LTS to 16.04 LTS).

When I manually add "/usr/share/php/libzend-framework-php" to the

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1574250] Re: icingaweb2 2.1.0 can't find Zend library

2016-12-07 Thread Nish Aravamudan
I am working on getting this fixed in Zesty, which is required before we
fix it in Xenial & Yakkety properly. But there, I'm trying to work on
LP: #1593024, which will let Ubuntu inherit the icingaweb2 directly from
Debian going forward (requires dealing with a similar but differently
maintained and named zend-framework package in Ubuntu).

Once I get some help getting that fixed up, I will upload a fix for
Xenial. I will, in the meanwhile, provide a PPA with a test build.

Bug description:
  With the ubuntu-archive-publishing change in
  https://code.launchpad.net/~xnox/ubuntu-archive-publishing/migrate-
dist-upgrade-to-4k/+merge/311181 the signing process for the dist-
upgrader tarball has been changed. This change should be tested now,
rather than doing an ubuntu-release-upgrader change months from now
and wondering why things aren't working (if they are broken).

Due to the way the gpg signature is generated we can't just remove it
and have it regenerated as the timestamp for the signature will not
change, so the change will not propogate to the mirrors. Hence the
need for a mostly no change (mirrors and demotions may change) upload
  of ubuntu-release-upgrader.

  Test Case
  -
  1) run do-release-upgrade -p --frontend DistUpgradeViewText
  2) ensure the tarball for the next release e.g. xenial.tar.gz is downloaded
and the signature verification passes

  Regression Potential

It's possible the signing is wrong and the verification of the signature will
fail thereby causing release upgrades to be impossible.

Bug description:
New SRU tracking bug (with exception) for ubuntu-image 0.12 in Yakkety
  and Xenial.

  See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuImageUpdates

  [Impact]

ubuntu-image 0.12 fixes quite a few usability and functionality bugs,
and also updates the gadget.yaml parsing to the latest spec. It also
fixes issues related to the autopkgtests.

  [Test Case]

Create an image without --cloud-init. Mount the file system and ensure
  that there's no var/lib/cloud/seed/nocloud-net/meta-data file.

Create an image with --cloud-init. Mount the file system and ensure
that the var/lib/cloud/seed/nocloud-net/meta-data file exists. The
contents of the file should be `instance-id: nocloud-static`.

  [Regression Potential]

  When --cloud-init is given, var/lib/cloud/seed/nocloud-net/meta-data
is not written, or the cloud-init option value is not copied to
  var/lib/cloud/seed/nocloud-net/user-data
