Bug description:
  [Impact]
  We're adding a backported bnxt driver to Xenial (LP #1711056). It's an
alternate for the regular Xenial driver that only manages NICs that are not
supported by the regular Xenial driver. Since the backported driver lives in
the special location kernel/ubuntu/bnxt it's not automatically included in the
initramfs. But it's boot-critical so it needs to be added to the initramfs.

  [Test Case]
  Install the Xenial kernel on hardware that contains a newer Broadcom NIC and
boots over that NIC. The machine will not come up because the NIC is not
recognized.

  [Regression Risk]
  The driver is only loaded for newer Broadcom NICs. Older NICs are still
managed by the regular Xenial driver, so there should be no regression.

Bug description:
  A requirement for snappy is that a snap may be placed in developer
  mode which will put the security sandbox in complain mode such that
  violations against policy are logged, but permitted. In this manner
  learning tools can be written to parse the logs, etc and make
  developing on snappy easier.

  Unfortunately with seccomp only SCMP_ACT_KILL logs to dmesg and while
  we can set complain mode to permit all calls, they are not logged at
  this time. I've discussed this with upstream and we are working
  together on the approach. This may require a kernel patch and an
  update to libseccomp, to filing this bug for now as a placeholder and
  we'll add other tasks as necessary.

  UPDATE: ubuntu-core-launcher now supports the '@complain' directive
  that is a synonym for '@unrestricted' so people can at least turn on
  developer mode and not be blocked by seccomp. Proper complain mode for
  seccomp needs to still be implemented (this bug).

  [Impact]

  Snapd needs a way to log seccomp actions without blocking any syscalls
  in order to have a more useful complain mode. Such functionality has
  been acked upstream and patches are on their way into the Linux 4.14
  kernel (backported to 4.12.0-13.14 in artful).

  The corresponding libseccomp changes are still undergoing review
  (https://github.com/seccomp/libseccomp/pull/92). The pull request adds
  a number of new symbols and probably isn't appropriate to backport
  until upstream has acked the pull request. However, only a small part
  of that larger pull request is needed by snapd and that change can be
  safely backported since the only added symbol, the SCMP_ACT_LOG macro,
  must match the SECCOMP_RET_LOG macro that has already been approved
  and merged in the upstream Linux kernel.

  [libseccomp Test Case]

  A large number of tests are ran as part of the libseccomp build.
  However, the "live" tests which test libseccomp with actual kernel
  enforcement are not ran at that time. They can be manually exercised
  to help catch any regressions. Note that on Artful, there's an
  existing test failure (20-live-basic_die%%002-1):

  $ sudo apt build-dep -y libseccomp
  $ sudo apt install -y cython
  $ apt source libseccomp
  $ cd libseccomp-*
  $ autoreconf -ivf && ./configure --enable-python && make check-build
  $ (cd tests && ./regression -T live)

  All tests should pass on zesty (12 tests) and xenial (10 tests). On artful,
you'll see one pre-existing failure:
  ...
  Test 20-live-basic_die%%002-1 result: FAILURE 20-live-basic_die TRAP
rc=159
  ...
  Regression Test Summary
   tests run: 12
   tests skipped: 0
   tests passed: 11
   tests failed: 1
   tests errored: 0

  Now we can build and run a small test program to test the SCMP_ACT_LOG
  action in the way that snapd wants to use it for developer mode:

  $ sudo apt install -y libseccomp-dev
  $ gcc -o lp1567597-test lp1567597-test.c -lseccomp
  $ ./lp1567597-test

  With a kernel that contains the logging patches and an updated
  libseccomp, the exit code should be 0 and you should have an entry in
  the system log that looks like this:

  audit: type=1326 audit(1505859630.994:69): auid=1000 uid=1000 gid=1000
  ses=2 pid=18451 comm="lp1567597-test"
  exe="/home/tyhicks/lp1567597-test" sig=0 arch=c03e syscall=2
  compat=0 ip=0x7f547352c5c0 code=0x7ffc

  If you have an updated libseccomp with an old kernel, you'll see that
  seccomp_init() fails due to the added compatibility check inside of
  libseccomp determines that the kernel doesn't have proper support for
  the new log action:

  nova-compute service does not need access to the database, systems
  where nova.conf is configured without a database connection the nova-
  common package will fail to get configured

  [Test Case]

  Using this deployer bundle -> http://paste.ubuntu.com/25426891/
  juju-deployer -c bundle.yaml -d -v -s 10 xenial-mitaka
  # once everything is installed
  git clone https://github.com/openstack-charmers/openstack-charms-tools.git
  cd openstack-charms-tools/
  ./os-upgrade.py -o cloud:xenial-newton

  Expected result:

  nova-compute units upgrade their packages to newton without errors

  Actual result:

  nova-common fails to configure itself in the nova-compute units

  [Regression Potential]

  This change was tested in a staging environment and no regressions
  were detected, but any possible regression will express itself as a
  failure running "nova-manage db sync".

  [Other Info]
  The original reason this bug was opened is that nova db sync is executed when
the 'connection' is not defined. Let's fix that and at the same time drop all
db syncs from OpenStack packages in Pike.

  More on the nova issue:

  When the 'connection' configuration key is NOT defined in
  /etc/nova/nova.conf the nova-common.postinst script still tries to run
  'nova-manage db sync'

  On Power Systems, some interrupts are missed, and dumping the crash will
fail. Adding the noirqdistrib kernel parameter to the kdump kernel will fix
this.

  [Test Case]
  Setting up kdump to target a virtio-scsi device on a Power System.

  [Regression Potential]
  The parameter could be interpreted differently on a different platform and
kdump would fail. However, it has been verified that no other platform uses
such parameter. If another parameter would have been incorrectly removed on the
patch, kdump could fail on other systems.

  ---Problem Description---

  On a KVM guest installed to a multipath root device, the kdump kernel
  fails to mount the root file system. This error does not occur in a
  similar guest installed to a single path device.

  Full console output of the kdump failure is attached. These messages
  from the output may be relevant:

  Begin: Loading multipath modules ... Success: loaded module dm-multipath.
  done.
  Begin: Loading multipath hardware handlers ... Failure: failed to load module
sc
  si_dh_alua.
  Failure: failed to load module scsi_dh_rdac.
  Failure: failed to load module scsi_dh_emc.
  done.
  Begin: Starting multipathd ... done.

  ---uname output---

2016 ppc64le ppc64le ppc64le GNU/Linux

  Machine Type = 8247-22L Ubuntu 16.04.1 KVM guest

  ---Steps to Reproduce---
   - Install Ubuntu 16.04.1 to a muiltpath target disk
  - Install kdump-tools package
  - Configure kexec-tools to reserve sufficient RAM for the kdump kernel to
load (I use 512MB) in /etc/default/grub.d/kexec-tools.cfg
  - Run update-grub
  - Reboot
  - Initiate a system crash using "echo c > /proc/sysrq-trigger"

  >
  > Could you please recreate the guest for further debug?

  Yes, I recreated the guest with its correct multipath lun
  configuration. I have also attached the guest XML to this bug.

  > Besides that could you please let us know:
  > - is the multipath the system's root? I mean / is installed/mounted on the
  > multipath device?

  Yes, the guest has only one disk. That disk is actually a LUN from a
  fiber channel storage device with two paths on the host side. I have
  passed through both paths to the guest, so the multipath nature of the
  target disk is known to the guest.

  In other words, the guest sees a multipath device and is using it as a
  multipath device. The root file system is called /dev/mapper/mpatha-
  part2 on the guest.

  > - how did you attach the device to the guest?

  Each FC LUN path on the host is mapped to a virtio-scsi controller on
  the guest using LUN passthrough. (See the guest XML for details on
  this.)

  == Comment: #22 - Mauro Sergio Martins Rodrigues  - 2017-01-11 09:31:38 ==
  I managed to get kdump to mount rootfs and perform its tasks by setting
KDUMP_CMDLINE_APPEND="nr_cpus=4" parameter in /etc/default/kdump-tools see
http://pastebin.hursley.ibm.com/8239

  I'm still investigating to figure out what is the reason behind this
  behavior.

  Thanks,

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1724836] [NEW] Xenial update to 4.4.93 stable release

2017-10-19 Thread Stefan Bader
Public bug reported:

SRU Justification

Impact:
   The upstream process for stable tree updates is quite similar
   in scope to the Ubuntu SRU process, e.g., each patch has to
   demonstrably fix a bug, and each patch is vetted by upstream
   by originating either directly from a mainline/stable Linux tree or
   a minimally backported form of that patch. The 4.4.93 upstream stable
   patch set is now available. It should be included in the Ubuntu
   kernel as well.

TEST CASE: TBD

   The following patches from the 4.4.93 stable release shall be
applied:

** Affects: linux (Ubuntu)

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1723480] Re: openvswitch-switch package postinst modifies existing configuration

2017-10-19 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package openvswitch - 2.8.0-0ubuntu2

---
openvswitch (2.8.0-0ubuntu2) artful; urgency=medium

  [ James Page ]
  * d/p/s390x-stp-timeout.patch: Increase STP sync wait time for
'STP - flush the fdb and mdb when topology changed' test as this
reliable takes longer than 36 seconds on s390x (LP: #1722799).

  [ Frode Nordahl ]
  * d/openvswitch-switch.postinst: Do not modify
/etc/default/openvswitch-switch as this file is now managed
as a configuration file by dpkg (LP: #1723480).

Bug description:
  [Impact]
   * When using OpenvSwitch in a modeled or configuration managed environment
unmotivated changes to configuration files like
/etc/default/openvswitch-switch will lead unnecessary service restarts on
future events in a deployment.

   * Restarting the openvswitch-switch service impacts datapath and
  should be avoided. Any future updates or security updates to this
  package will cause problems for existing users and I believe the
  package in the stable release should be updated because of this.

   * I also believe having a package change existing configuration files
  to be in conflict with best practices set out in the config files
  section of the Debian Policy.

   * The proposed fix addresses the issue by removing the processing of
  /etc/default/openvsiwtch-switch from the postinst script. The template
  for this processing is installed in
  /usr/share/openvswitch/switch/default.template should the user want to
  view comments added there in future updates.

  [Test Case]

   * apt install openvswitch-switch
   * edit /etc/default/openvswitch-switch, removing one of the commented out
sections
   * apt remove openvswitch-switch
   * stat /etc/default/openvswitch-switch
   * Observe that your modified configuration file remains
   * apt install openvswitch-switch
   * stat /etc/default/openvswitch-switch
   * Observe that the openvswitch-switch package has added comments to your
modified configuration file

   * Repeat these steps with the proposed fix and observe that the
  configuration file is no longer modified by the package postinst
  script.

  [Regression Potential]

   * The current postinst script aims at adding non-existing sections of
  the template to the default file in /etc. These sections are commented
  out and have no effect on the running service.

   * End users will find any new configuration options in the template

  [Original Bug Description]
  Similar to, but slightly different from bug 1712444, we have found the
upgrade of the openvswitch-switch package by unattended-upgrade (or otherwise)
will trigger the service restart of openvswitch-switch within the
neutron-openvswitch charm if the config-changed hook is called.

  While this is a reasonable behavior based on an assumption that if the
  /etc/default/openvswitch-switch file changes due to upgrade and the
  charm resets it to the charm-configured version of the file, we should
  want to restart the service to be on the latest code. However, the
  restart of the service causes between 6-12 seconds of network outage
  for the tenant VMs utilizing OVS.

  Would it be possible to have a config-flag to disable the charm's
  ability to restart the openvswitch-switch service outside of the
  install hook to avoid automated network outages due to package
  upgrades?

  Elsewise, is there a way to serialize the resulting restarts in such a
  way that only one member of the neutron-openvswitch
  application/service is restarting at a time along with a buffer to
  allow for high availability applications to failover and fail back and
  not be afflicted by multiple nodes' switches being restarted
  simultaneously.

  [Regression Potential]

   * This is a cherry-pick from an upstream fix
(https://jira.mariadb.org/browse/MDEV-6450)
   * This is not fixed in upstream Percona becasue Percona does not officially
support non-intel archs.
   * Because code adds additional memory barriers there was a chance of
performance degradation on i386/amd64. However, intensive sysbench syntetic

https://github.com/MariaDB/server/commit/40497577ffd9f85557b15e08ad913f627b2e9530

  [Original Description]

  I'm trying to set up percona-xtradb-cluster-5.5 on PPC machine. While
  the package installs fine, as soon as I run sysbench oltp becnhmark
  against it, Percona dies (even when I start the benchmark with just
  one connection).

  I can also crash mysql manually, by updating the sbtest table (which
  is created by the sysbench utility):

  mysql> update sbtest set pad = 'mario1' limit 100;
  ERROR 2013 (HY000): Lost connection to MySQL server during query

  Sometimes I need to repeat this update (with different values for
  'pad' field) few times. This happens regardless of whether I run the
  UPDATE inside the transaction or not.

  This is the assertion found in the log file:

  170117 21:10:55 InnoDB: Assertion failure in thread 7038321152 in file
buf0buf.ic line 1277
  InnoDB: Failing assertion: block->page.buf_fix_count > 0

  This is a single-node percona-xtradb-cluster server, without
  wsrep_provied configured, run inside 14.04 lxc container on 16.04
  host.

  I'm attaching the full log file, mysql configuration file and the core
  dumped.

  The version of the package installed is this 5.5.37-25.10+dfsg-
  0ubuntu0.14.04.2.
