While nothing has an After=apt-daily.timer (or rather an After=timers.target) and this should thus not impact boot performance, the rc-local.service specifies an After=network-online.target and the login stuff (getty, gdm, etc) is ordered After=rc-local, thus severely increasing the time to login if nothing else pulls in network-online (like an LSB script). This works around the problem on most boots, the problem will only occur if the timer would have elapsed while the machine was off. [Test case] Well, the change is fairly obvious. Actually testing that is pointless, and depending on the system configuration, network-online.target might be pulled in by something else. So just look at the file and check that the network-online.target dependency moved to the service. [Regression potential] Literally none. We just move the dependency to the service which actually needs it. I reproduced the http change with the tls support from 1.5, because launchpad was causing issues with that. In most cases this is not a problem as systemd starts postgres via pg_ctlcluster, a "multiversion/cluster aware pg_ctl wrapper", and pg_ctlcluster will create missing directories before starting postgres. But in cases where systemd is not starting postgres this is a problem. Specifically, when postgres is controlled by pacemaker (using postgres resource agent for pacemaker) it is started using pg_ctl wrapper. pg_ctl won't create missing directories and therefore postgres fails to start. The simplest solution for this issue is to have systemd recreate missing directories via /usr/lib/tmpfiles.d/postgresql.conf file. Currently only /var/run/postgresql and /var/log/postgresql are created using systemd-tmpfiles. [Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1749143] Re: BUG: unable to use fping: 127.0.0.1: error while sending ping: Bad address
Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream stable kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.4 stable kernel[0]. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'. If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'. If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'. Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed". Thanks in advance. [Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1748310] Re: [SRU][xenial]boot stalls looking for entropy in FIPS mode
** Also affects: libgcrypt20 (Ubuntu Xenial) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of नेपाली भाषा समायोजकहरुको समूह, which is subscribed to Xenial. Matching subscriptions: Ubuntu 16.04 Bugs https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1748310 Title: [SRU][xenial]boot stalls looking for entropy in FIPS mode Status in libgcrypt20 package in Ubuntu: New Status in libgcrypt20 source package in Xenial: New Bug description: [IMPACT] libgcrypt20 is not a FIPS certified library. On a machine running FIPS enabled kernel, the library by default goes into FIPS mode if /proc/sys/crypto/fips_enabled=1. FIPS mode is not a configurable compile option currently in the library. Hence FIPS code paths are always executed on a FIPS enabled machine. In FIPS mode, it runs self tests and integrity checks and it looks for quality entropy from /dev/random. On encrypted installations, cryptsetup uses libgcrypt20. During boot on an encrypted machine running in FIPS mode, cryptsetup invokes libgcrypt and it stalls looking for quality entropy from /dev/random. This results in significant delays during startup. The issue was reported by a FIPS customer. This issue impacts xenial's version of libgcrypt. In later version of libgcrypt in Bionic, the entropy device is a global configurable option via /etc/gcrypt/random.conf config file. The config setting "only-urandom" can be used to set the entropy device to /dev/urandom globally in libgcrypt. lsb_release -rd Description: Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS Release: 16.04 version - 1.6.5-2ubuntu0.3 [FIX] Get entropy from /dev/urandom device in FIPS mode. This does not block. [TEST] Tested on a VM installed with xenial desktop iso and one with xenial server iso. Enabled full disk encryption during install. Tested with and without FIPS. No delays were observed during boot after the fix patch was applied. With FIPS enabled on encrypted install, without the patch fix, the boot stalls before and after prompting for decryption password. [REGRESSION POTENTIAL] The regression potential for this is small. This patch does not take away current functionality. It changes the entropy device in FIPS mode to /dev/urandom to get faster entropy. [Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1748710] Re: Linux 4.4.0-113.136 (i386/x86_32): failed to boot and BusyBox v1.22.1 built-in shell (initramfs).
Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.16 kernel[0]. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'. If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'. Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed". Thanks in advance. Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Status in linux source package in Xenial: Incomplete Bug description: Hello. On Thu Feb 8, Linux kernel for Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS has been updated to the 4.4.0-113.136 version (xenial-proposed). However, after reboot, plymouth freezes during start, and keys on an USB keyboard were in- active. After several seconds, the BusyBox shell screen appeared. It looks this way: ,-- | BusyBox v1.22.1 (Ubuntu 1:1.22.0-15ubuntu1) built-in shell (ash) | Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands. | | (initramfs) _ `-- Unfortunately, the USB keyboard does not work and does not respond. The only way to solve this issue is a "hard reset" and in GRUB menu choosing an earlier kernel, which is linux 4.4.0-112.135. Now, everything works okay. Proposed update to the Linux 4.4.0-113.136 contains many new updates (please see 1.) It's an i386/x86_32 architecture, which does not contain PTI yet, right? I'm asking, because mentioned -proposed updates contains a couple of PTI-related patches and bugs in PTI can cause a few different signatures of crashes etc. For example: → Crashes in early boot, especially around CPU bringup. Bugs in the trampoline code or mappings cause these. → Userspace segfaults early in boot, sometimes manifesting as mount(8) failing to mount the rootfs. These have tended to be TLB invalidation issues. Usually invalidating the wrong PCID, or otherwise missing an invalidation. NOTE: if it's about PCID, which is mentioned in a second point, there is one patch in -proposed update: "x86/mm/32: Move setup_clear_cpu_cap(X86_FEATURE_PCID) earlier". Maybe that's is the cause of a boot failure? There are no errors in log files, such as '/var/log/syslog' or '/var/log/kern.log'. However, it's a Celeron, "E" series. So, I don't know if mentioned patches are good for this type of processor etc.? Especially on i386/x86_32 architecture. ● UPDATE/WARNING: It seems, that 'kaslr' option is responsible for this issue. After booting the latest v4.4.0-115.139 kernel, I've had the same problems as described above. However, after removing 'kaslr' option from a command line via GRUB menu, system started normally etc. The latest, working kernel with 'kaslr' option is v4.4.0-112.135. According to all of this I think, that 'kaslr' is not compatible with some "Spectre & Meltdown" mitigation patches and fixes etc. ✗ Release ('/proc/version_signature'): Ubuntu 4.4.0-112.135-generic 4.4.98 ✗ Architecture: i386/x86_32 ✗ PCI ('lspci -vnvn'): 00:0a.0 PCI bridge [0604]: NVIDIA Corporation MCP73 PCI Express bridge [10de:056d] (rev a1) (prog-if 01 [Subtractive decode]) Capabilities: [b8] Subsystem: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd MCP73 PCI Express bridge [1458:026f] Thanks, regards. 1. https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/xenial- changes/2018-February/020108.html To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1748710/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~group.of.nepali.translators Post to : group.of.nepali.translators@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~group.of.nepali.translators More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1748894] Re: intermittent dhcp failures

Matching subscriptions: Ubuntu 16.04 Bugs https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1748894 Title: intermittent dhcp failures Status in neutron: Incomplete Status in neutron package in Ubuntu: New Status in neutron source package in Xenial: New Bug description: Hi, We have observed instances failing to get a DHCP reply, either when booting for the first time, or after a reboot. By tcpdumping the traffic on the tap, then qvb and qvo interfaces, we can see the DHCP request leaving, but it doesn't reach the neutron-gateway node where the dhcp agent for the network runs. If we remove and then re-add the network to the dhcp agent, it starts working fine again. I have dumped the output of `ovs-ofctl dump-flows br-tun` on the neutron-gateway side, before and after doing the remove/add. One difference I noted, was a rule appearing, with the mac of the VM which had the issue: cookie=0xb42e8d404b989e72, duration=13.344s, table=20, n_packets=0, n_bytes=0, hard_timeout=300, idle_age=13, priority=1,vlan_tci=0x0001/0x0fff,dl_dst=fa:16:3e:db:34:a3 actions=load:0->NXM_OF_VLAN_TCI[],load:0x20->NXM_NX_TUN_ID[],output:5201 However, this is a rule for packets from the dhcp agent to the VM, so its absence doesn't explain why DHCP requests don't arrive to destination. The cloud is running neutron 8.4.0 (Mitaka), on ubuntu (16.04) machines. Most of the time it works, but this problem comes back often enough that it impacts users. Thanks.
