  kcm_driver_manager: Infinitely shows Collecting information

Status in Kubuntu PPA:
  Expired
Status in libqapt package in Ubuntu:
  Expired
Status in libqapt source package in Xenial:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  [Impact]

  * libQapt needs apt-xapian-index in order to search for packages, otherwise
it never returns a result.
  * As a consequence Driver Manager doesn't find packages and is empty.
  * Before, apt-xapian-index was installed as a dependence of Muon (libmuon),
which is not included in the default install anymore.

  [Test Case]

  * Update libqapt and run `kcmshell5 kcm_driver_manager`.
  * After some time (~1 minute) Driver Manager shows suggested packages.

  [Regression Potential]

  * Low, Driver Manager is useless as of now.
  * The same fix was applied in Yakkety.

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1790709] Re: Backport gnu-efi 3.0.8 to all supported releases for SHIM

  All users on UEFI systems.

  Gnu-efi needs to be backported everywhere to support new shim
  releases. This applies to bionic, xenial, and trusty.

  This is to properly build the new shim releases on these releases of
  Ubuntu.

  [Test cases]
  -- build tests --
  Validate that the following reverse-dependencies build correctly:

  Reverse-Build-Depends-Indep
  ===
  * syslinux

  Reverse-Build-Depends
  =
  * dell-recovery
  * efitools
  * fwupd
  * fwupdate
  * kexec-tools
  * refind
  * sbsigntool
  * shim
  * systemd

  Rebuild tests will happen in
  https://launchpad.net/~cyphermox/+archive/ubuntu/rebuild-tests

  == Functionality tests ==

  Run the following tests after the packages have been rebuilt against
  the new gnu-efi.

  === mokutil ===
  Validate that mokutil can process:
  - Certificate import: mokutil --import
  - List enrolled certificates: mokutil --list-enrolled
  - Set verbosity: mokutil --set-verbosity true

  Reboot, and validate that MokManager processes the requested changes.

  [Regression potential]
  gnu-efi is a library that supports applications in handling EFI variables in
and outside of the runtime environment, along with supporting standard library
features for EFI applications. As such, any application that makes uses of EFI
variables on a running system or as their own EFI application should be
validated against possible corruption of the contents of the variables, as well
as doing smoketesting of the EFI applications themselves for incorrect
behavior, crashes, and other runtime issues.

  [Test case]

  == shim ==
  1) Enable Secure Boot in firmware.
  2) Update to new shim and shim-signed packages (shim 15+, shim-signed 1.37~)
  3) Validate that the system still boots and validates the shim image as well
as the grub binary.

  == MokManager ==
  0) Generate a new self-signed certificate. You can use "sudo
update-secureboot-policy --new-mok" for that purpose, the DER file will be in
/var/lib/shim-signed/mok.
  1) Run 'sudo mokutil --enable-validation'
  2) Follow prompts on screen to enable validation if applicable.
  3) Run 'sudo mokutil --import '
  4) Follow the prompts on screen to import a new certificate.
  5) Reboot
  6) Follow prompts to import the new certificate and enable validation.
  7) Validate that the system boots all the way to userland.
  8) Verify that the certificate has been correctly imported, it should be
listed in the output of 'sudo mokutil --list-enrolled'.

  == mokutil ==
  1) Run 'sudo mokutil --timeout 14' (or any other arbitrary value).
  2) follow the steps for MokManager tests above.
  3) Validate that the MokManager prompt happens and shows a timeout
appropriate for the timeout value set using the mokutil command.

  Also validate 'mokutil --timeout 0' works correctly, where the
  MokManager never times out.

  [Regression potential]
  Possible regressions might include failure to load shim or MokManager, or
failure to validate an EFI binary (which usually translates in a Security
Violation message. Any such issues should be investigated as possible
regressions caused by this update.

  ---

  Backport shim to all supported releases of Ubuntu.

  Include mokutil changes to support new timeout feature.

Bug description:
  [Impact]
  When there are multiple DHCP servers on the network, iPXE doesn't handle
NAK's for the DHCP servers. This causes iPXE to get blocked without attempting
to re-discover, hence, never obtaining an IP address.

  For example, in a MAAS HA environment with a DHCP master/slave
  configuration, the machine fails to PXE boot because at a certain
  point, the DHCP server is not fully in sync, which causes iPXE to get
  a NAK request. This prevents the machine from PXE booting.

  [Test case]
  The easiest way:
  1. Install MAAS with two rack controllers
  2. Configure HA
  3. PXE boot KVM's.

  [Regression Potential]
  Minimal. This only ensures that iPXE attempts to re-discover the network when
it receives a NACK.

  [Original bug report]
  A VM failed to PXE boot after receiving multiple DHCP offers.

  You can see this here on a log from the secondary controller:
  http://paste.ubuntu.com/25221939/

  The node is offered both 10.245.208.201 and 10.245.208.120, tries to
  get 10.245.208.120, and is refused.

  One strange thing is that it seems like the DHCP server on both the primary
controller and the secondary controller are responding. The primary
controller's log doesn't have the offer for 10.245.208.120 - only the offer for
10.245.208.201:
  http://paste.ubuntu.com/25221952/

  This is in an HA setup: region API's are at 10.245.208.30,
  10.245.208.31 and 10.245.208.32. We're using hacluster to load
  balance, and a VIP in front at 10.245.208.33. There are rack
  controllers on 10.245.208.30 and 10.245.208.31. For the untagged vlan
  this VM is trying to boot from, 10.245.208.30 is set as the primary
  controller, and 10.245.208.31 is set as the secondary.

  Primary postgres is on 10.245.208.30, it's being replicated to backup
  postgres on 10.245.208.31. It has a VIP at 10.245.208.34.

  We don't hit this everytime - on this deployment only one machine out
  of about 30 hit this.

  We've also seen this on single node MAAS setups - non HA. So, it's
  not an HA specific issue.

  I've attached logs from the maas servers.

Marked as Fix Released on Bionic/Xenial because the SRU for bug 1777912
is done. I can't make Artful "Won't Fix", but it should be.

** Changed in: cloud-init (Ubuntu Xenial)

Bug description:
  When deploying a machine through MAAS with bonded network interfaces,
  the bond does not have a 9000 byte MTU applied despite the attached
  VLANs having had a 9000 MTU explicitly set. The MTU size is set on the
  bond members, but not on the bond itself in Netplan. Consequently,
  when the bond is brought up, the interface MTU is decreased from 9000
  to 1500. Manually changing the interface MTU after boot is successful.

  This is not observed when deploying Xenial on the same machine. The
  bond comes up at the expected 9000 byte MTU.

  Kernel hang on drive pull caused by incomplete backport for bug
  1597908

Bug description:
  A bug was introduced when backporting the fix for
  http://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1597908. This bug exists in all Ubuntu
  16.04 LTS 4.4 kernels >= 4.4.0-36, and many other non-LTS kernels.

  This patch changes the context in which timeout work is scheduled for
  block devices in the kernel. Previously, timeout work was executed
  directly from the timer callback that fired when a deadline was met.
  After the patch, timeout work is scheduled using a background work
  queue. This means that by the time the work executes, the device queue
  which originally scheduled the work could be torn down. In order to
  prevent this, the patch takes a reference on the device queue when
  executing the timeout work.

  The problem is that the last reference to this queue can be removed
  before the timeout work can be executed. During teardown, the block
  system executes a freeze followed by a drain. The freeze drops the
  last reference on the queue. The drain tries to clean up any
  outstanding work, including timeout work. After a freeze, the timeout
  work in the background queue is unable to obtain a reference, and
  exits early without completing work. The work is now permanently stuck
  in the queue and it will never be completed. The drain in the device
  teardown path spins indefinitely.

  The bug manifests as a hang that looks like this:
  [] schedule+0x35/0x80
  [] hpsa_scan_start+0x109/0x140 [hpsa]
  [] ? wake_atomic_t_function+0x60/0x60
  [] hpsa_rescan_ctlr_worker+0x1d2/0x652 [hpsa]
  [] process_one_work+0x165/0x480
  [] worker_thread+0x4b/0x4c0
  [] ? process_one_work+0x480/0x480
  [] kthread+0xd8/0xf0
  [] ? kthread_create_on_node+0x1e0/0x1e0
  [] ret_from_fork+0x3f/0x70
  [] ? kthread_create_on_node+0x1e0/0x1e0

  The fix exists upstream. It applies, builds, and runs cleanly on Ubuntu's
most recent 4.4 kernel.

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit?id=4e9b6f20828ac880dbc1fa2fdbafae779473d1af

  We hit this bug nearly 100% of the time on some of our HP hardware.
  The HPSA driver has a tendency to aggressively remove missing devices,
  so it widens the race. As a result, we've been building our own kernel
  with this patch applied. It would be really nice if we could get it
  into mainline Ubuntu.

  Let me know what additional information is needed. Thanks!

  I opened an upstream bug against ZFS on Linux, here:
  https://github.com/zfsonlinux/zfs/issues/7502

  And it has been recently fixed, here:
  https://github.com/zfsonlinux/zfs/pull/7509

  Can this upstream fix be pulled into the Ubuntu 18.04 LTS packages?

  Thanks,

Title:
  Xenial update to 4.4.148 stable release

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid
Status in linux source package in Xenial:
  In Progress

Bug description:

  SRU Justification

  Impact:
 The upstream process for stable tree updates is quite similar
 in scope to the Ubuntu SRU process, e.g., each patch has to
 demonstrably fix a bug, and each patch is vetted by upstream
 by originating either directly from a mainline/stable Linux tree or
 a minimally backported form of that patch. The 4.4.148 upstream stable
 patch set is now available. It should be included in the Ubuntu
 kernel as well.

 git://git.kernel.org/

  TEST CASE: TBD

 The following patches from the 4.4.148 stable release shall be
  applied:

Bug description:
  https://github.com/systemd/systemd/pull/10061

  [Impact]

   * When logind is not available, shutdown command fails to schedule a
  shutdown, and despite its intentions to immediately shutdown, does not
  do so.

  [Test Case]

sudo systemctl mask systemd-logind.service
sudo systemctl stop systemd-logind.service
shutdown +1

  The expectation is that system goes to shutdown.

  It is buggy if the system remains up - i.e. command returns to shell
  with exit code 1.

  [Regression Potential]

   * It is a corner case to run against systemd-shim logind / or logind
  not otherwise available. The function still performs a clean-shutdown,
  and should not cause loss of work.

  [Other Info]

   * Original bug report, running against systemd-shim/systemd-service post
trusty->xenial upgrade, pre-reboot.

  Used Landscape (Paid Canonical Subscription) to upgrade one of my machines.

  Landscape only shows "In Progress" for more than 8 hours now and asked
  for a reboot of the machine in a second alert.

  In the reboot attempt I get the message:
  =
  Failed to set wall message, ignoring: Method "SetWallMessage" with signature
"sb" on interface "org.freedesktop.login1.Manager" doesn't exist
  Failed to call ScheduleShutdown in logind, proceeding with immediate
shutdown: Method "ScheduleShutdown" with signature "st" on interface
"org.freedesktop.login1.Manager" doesn't exist
  =

  Steps to reproduce:
  * Fully updated 14.04.5 machine
  * Open Landscape
  * Choose the machine
  * Choose Packages
  * This computer can be upgraded to a newer release
  * Apply
  * Wait 2 hours
  * Alert comes in a seperate Landscape message Machine is ready for reboot
  * Choose Info... Power
  * Deliver to selected computers as soon as possible
  * Error message

  I found this thread on reddit about this issue maybe the solution can be
built into the upgrade script

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1783152] Re: Enable basic support for Solarflare 8000 series NIC

Bug description:
  SRU Justification:

  [Impact]

   * Users cannot use Solarflare 8000 series NICs.

   * Servers with only this NIC cannot do netboot.

   * The patchset adds the PCI IDs and a basic fix.

  [Test Case]

   * Try to probe/netboot/use a Solarflare 8000
     series NIC.

   * It does not probe on the original kernel,
     but it does probe/netboot/install/stress
     (i.e., basic fuctionality works) on the
     patched kernel.

  [Regression Potential]

   * Users with Solarflare 8000 series NIC might hit
     problems on device probe or due to a new network
     interface coming up, now that the NIC comes up.

   * More specific features of the NIC or advanced
     tuning/setup might not work as expected or run
     into issues.

  [Other Info]

   * There are known error messages on device probe.

   * These are benign/non-fatal and will be addressed
     on another SRU cycle.

  ---

  The Trusty HWE kernel from Xenial lacks the PCI ID for the Solarflare 8000
series NIC.
  This prevents network installs on servers which only have that NIC.

  In order to get NIC detected, link up, and successful network install,
  only 2 commits are required:

  dd248f1bc65b sfc: Add PCI ID for Solarflare 8000 series 10/40G NIC
  93171b14a545 sfc: make TSO version a per-queue parameter

  This patchset is undergoing testing, and I will post the patches to
  the kernel-team mailing list.

  ---

  There are some kernel messages produced possibly due to additional commits
missing,
  but are benign/non-fatal and allows the NIC probing and basic functionality
to work.

  [2.803941] sfc :37:00.0 (unnamed net_device) (uninitialized):
Solarflare NIC detected
  [2.806336] sfc :37:00.0 (unnamed net_device) (uninitialized): Part

  [2.808488] sfc :37:00.0 (unnamed net_device) (uninitialized): MC

to allocate PIO buffers (-1)
  ...
  [4.037694] sfc :37:00.0 p2p1: link up at 4Mbps full-duplex (MTU

  The PTP (precision time protocol / ieee 1588) support is a feature to
synchronize clocks
  over a computer network with high precision, and is not required for basic
functionality
  nor for this particular user.

  The failure to allocate PIO buffers is non-fatal, see
  sfc/ef10.c/efx_ef10_dimension_resources() comments.

  The additional patches to resolve the error messages will be worked on
  another SRU cycle.

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1792109] [NEW] Xenial update to 4.4.147 stable release

2018-09-12 Thread Stefan Bader
Public bug reported:

SRU Justification

Impact:
   The upstream process for stable tree updates is quite similar
   in scope to the Ubuntu SRU process, e.g., each patch has to
   demonstrably fix a bug, and each patch is vetted by upstream
   by originating either directly from a mainline/stable Linux tree or
   a minimally backported form of that patch. The 4.4.147 upstream stable
   patch set is now available. It should be included in the Ubuntu
   kernel as well.

   git://git.kernel.org/

TEST CASE: TBD

The following patches from the 4.4.147 stable release shall be applied:
* scsi: qla2xxx: Fix ISP recovery on unload
* scsi: qla2xxx: Return error when TMF returns
* genirq: Make force irq threading setup more robust
* nohz: Fix local_timer_softirq_pending()
* netlink: Do not subscribe to non-existent groups
* netlink: Don't shift with UB on nlk->ngroups
* netlink: Don't shift on 64 for ngroups
* ACPI / PCI: Bail early in acpi_pci_add_bus() if there is no ACPI handle
* ring_buffer: tracing: Inherit the tracing setting to next ring buffer
* i2c: imx: Fix reinit_completion() use
* Linux 4.4.147
