Bug description:
  As done with LP: #1943701:

  Backport the first OpenJDK 17 security release to 21.10, 21.04, 20.04
  LTS and 18.04 LTS.

  Acceptance criteria: The package builds. We cannot run the tests yet,
  because the packages to build the test kit are not yet packaged.

  Risk: Low risk for 20.04 LTS and 18.04 LTS, it's a package not in the
  release pocket. There are currently no (build) dependencies on
  OpenJDK 17 in the archive itself.

  The packages are pre-built with only the security pocket enabled, so
  they can be used in the security pocket for further updates.

  MIR libzstd

Status in libzstd package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in libzstd source package in Xenial:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  [Availability]

   * In Universe, on all supported arches, since xenial

  [Rationale]

   * In use by btrfs-progs[-udeb] in main
   * To be used by apt & dpkg
   * Already in use by the kernel for initramfs compression, however that is
using in-kernel implementation

  [Security]

   * https://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvekey.cgi?keyword=zstd -> none
   * Hardenening flags is available
   * There are some compiler warnings

  [Quality assurance]

   * Maintained in debian med team
   * xnox has upload rights, and fixed up for it to be Multi-arch sane
   * testsuite is enabled and passing
   * lacks autopkgtests, could be added to run the test-suite

  [Dependencies]

   * Currently has only glibc as depedency
   * Command line tool can be compiled with gzip (already eanbled), xz/lzma/lz4
(not enabled), thus making the zstd util to cover all cases of
compress/decompress/cat/less for any of these algos.

  [Standards compliance]

   * Complies with debian packaging guidelines
   * Currently does not build reproducibly

  [Maintenance]

   * Med, D-I teams in Debian, and foundations in Ubuntu

  [Background information]

   * A new compression algorithm from facebook, which is comparable to
  gzip, yet faster / less resource intensive than xz.

  libltspi-dev is a build dependency for ecryptfs-utils, which is under
consideration for main:
   * Bug #247400
   * https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MainInclusionReportEcryptfsUtils

  We could, perhaps, remove libltspi-dev as a build dependency for
ecryptfs-utils (Patch with Bug #247389). I requested that Debian do this
upstream, but they disagreed.  See:
   * http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=490233

  libltspi contains support for the Trusted Computing (TPM) chips which
  are found on many new laptops and servers, particularly IBM hardware.

  If we include support for libltspi, ecryptfs could be used to
  cryptographically couple filesystems to particular hardware.

  Starting in Xenial, 'pip install' by default places executables into

  But unfortunately, Ubuntu's does *not* add this directory to $PATH by

  scripts that are installed are inaccessible, and every user has to
  manually add this to their PATH.

  Ubuntu should put ~/.local/bin onto PATH by default.

  Minor details (discussed with @doko at the PyCon sprints):

  - this should go at the beginning of PATH rather than the end, in accordance
with Debian policy saying that more-local paths go before more-upstream paths.
(This is inconsistent with how Fedora/RH do it, but consistent with how Python
itself searches for packages.)
  - this will be added to /etc/skel/profile, so that it won't change any
existing user accounts; it will only be applied to user accounts created
*after* this change lands
  - unlike ~/bin (which Debian/Ubuntu have supported for ages), it will be
added to PATH unconditionally, even if the directory doesn't exist. This is
important to avoid a nasty trap for new users, where the first time they try to
install a Python package they have to restart their shell. Since this only
applies to new accounts, the directory will always start out nonexistent/empty,
so having it in $PATH won't cause any unexpected changes in behavior.
  - possibly it would make sense to set this in /etc/environment or
/etc/skel/.gnomerc or similar, so that it would also apply to non-shell
processes (e.g. if the user wants to add a global key-binding to launch a
Python program, then generally ~/.profile *doesn't* affect the environment
where this command gets executed, and that can frustrate and confuse users if a
command works fine from the terminal but not from a keybinding). But we should
defer this discussion for the future, because even if this is a good idea, it
isn't a good idea in a Xenial stable update.

  SRU: Looks like only the math.o build without -fPIC makes it into the
  SRU. There shouldn't be any regression potential when building without
  -fPIC for the static interpreter. Acceptance criteria is running the
  benchmarks and not showing any performance regressions.

  I work on the OpenStack-Ansible project and we've noticed that testing
  jobs on 16.04 take quite a bit longer to complete than on 14.04. They
  complete within an hour on 14.04 but they normally take 90 minutes or
  more on 16.04. We use the same version of Ansible with both versions
  of Ubuntu.

  After more digging, I tested python performance (using the
  'performance' module) on 14.04 (2.7.6) and on 16.04 (2.7.12). There
  is a significant performance difference between each version of
  python. That is detailed in a spreadsheet[0].

  I began using perf to dig into the differences when running the python
  performance module and when using Ansible playbooks. CPU migrations
  (as measured by perf) are doubled in Ubuntu 16.04 when running the
  same python workloads.

  I tried changing some of the kerne.sched sysctl configurables but they
  had very little effect on the results.

  I compiled python 2.7.12 from source on 14.04 and found the
  performance to be unchanged there. I'm not entirely sure where the

  We also have a bug open in OpenStack-Ansible[1] that provides
  additional detail. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

  The test rebuild was done using the release candidate of 2.7.12,

Bug description:
  Dear Maintainer,

  The sha256sum provided by coreutils (without openssl) is performing
  poorly with gcc versions >= 4.9 until 7.0 (currently under development).
  The reason for that is the -fschedule-insns optimization that is used
  with -O2. By simply deactivating it, there is a performance improvement
  of 2 to 3 times.

  I'm using Ubuntu 16.10 and the coreutils package version
  8.25-2ubuntu2.

  Please check the following closed debian bug report:
  https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=854053

  Be aware of the following conditions that are required:
  * If ppc64le
  * If gcc being used is >= 4.9 and < 7.0

  Notes:
  1) gcc-7 is not affected by this bug (verified on 20170129 snapshot).
  2) clang is not affected by this bug (verified on v3.8 and v3.9).
  3) strangely the sha512 is not affected by this.

  Below a demonstration of how it performs on my POWER8 machine:

Bug description:
  [SRU Justification]
  gcc-5 from Ubuntu is configured with MPX support, but it is broken due
  to always-added linker option "-as-needed".

  [Test case]
  1. Pass -mmpx to gcc when building an arbitrary project on x86.
  2. Verify with ldd that the resulting executable is not linked against
libmpx.so because the -as-needed flag has discarded the mpx library from being
linked in.
  3. Install binutils and gcc-5 from -proposed.
  4. Rebuild the target, again with -mmpx.
  5. Verify with ldd that the new executable is linked against libmpx.so.
  6. Verify that there are no regressions in the binutils testsuite on any
architectures, by manually checking the results in the build log.

  [Regression potential]
  This binutils patch implements new --push-state / --pop-state options which
will not be used in the common case, only when -mmpx is passed. When these
flags are not in use, which is the default, it should have no effect on the
behavior of the toolchain, so risk of regression is minimal.

  Here is the GCC upstream bug & fix

  https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=77267

  https://gcc.gnu.org/viewcvs/gcc?view=revision=240057

  Would it be possible to backport this fix to Ubuntu gcc-5 build?

  Binutils version 2.27 is already in Ubuntu 17.04. Is there anything

  Well, as long as they pick up the backported fixes, nothing else is
  required. That's what this feature is there to ensure.

  Do you know, at this time, which are the fixes that will be requested

Bug description:
  1. What you expected to happen
  Profiling program by "perf --call-graph dwarf" shows correct call-graph in
perf report

  2. What actually happened
  perf report doesn't show correct call graph. Then perf is re-builded from
source. During building, perf configure detection says stock libunwind's
debug_frame feature is not enabled. It leads perf can't record program's
call-graph correctly.

  3. How it is solved on my local machine
a. get libunwind source by apt-get source libunwind-dev.
b. enable CONFIG_DEBUG_FRAME in libunwind configuration: autoreconfig -i &&
./configure --enable-debug-frame
c. build libunwind and install it to /usr/lib/local
d. get kernel source by apt-get source linux and compile perf with
following command:
 CFLAGS=-I/usr/local/include/ LDFLAGS="-lunwind -L/usr/local/lib/" make
e. perf call-graph works!

Bug description:
  On updating ubuntu from 15.04 to 15.10, I see changes in how clang
  resolves references to some libraries. (I think this is not an ubuntu
  question but rather a clang question and that I've missed some
  subtlety on how clang has recently changed. I suspect initially that
  this is related to the gcc-5 ABI changes, but I'm not sure how to
  proceed.)

  Here's a tiny test example designed only to tickle the phenomenon:

  #include
  #include

  int main(int argc, char *argv[]) {
  std::cout << argc << " - " << argv[0] << std::endl;
  Json::Reader reader;
  Json::Value root;
  reader.parse("", root, false);
  std::cout << reader.getFormattedErrorMessages() << std::endl;
  return 0;
  }

  If I compile like this

  clang++ -ggdb3 -Wall -Wextra -std=c++14 -o json_test json_test.cc
  -ljsoncpp

  /tmp/json_test-680d3a.o: In function `main':
  /tmp/json_test.cc:10: undefined reference to
`Json::Reader::getFormattedErrorMessages() const'
  clang: error: linker command failed with exit code 1 (use -v to see
invocation)

  And yet the definition appears to be present:

  jeff@birdsong:src $ objdump -TC /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libjsoncpp.so |
grep getFormatted
  e190 gDF .text  04d2  Base
Json::OurReader::getFormattedErrorMessages[abi:cxx11]() const
  dc70 gDF .text  04d2  Base
Json::Reader::getFormattedErrorMessages[abi:cxx11]() const
  jeff@birdsong:src $

  The abi:cxx11 suggests I might at least try this

  clang++ -ggdb3 -Wall -Wextra -std=c++11 -o json_test json_test.cc
  -ljsoncpp

  but same error. On the other hand, this works fine:

  g++ -ggdb3 -Wall -Wextra -std=c++14 -o json_test json_test.cc
  -ljsoncpp

  Fwiw, here's version info:

  Please add ~/.local/bin to the default $PATH

Status in bash package in Debian:

Bug description:
  Starting in Xenial, 'pip install' by default places executables into
  ~/.local/bin. This is the de-facto standard place to put per-user
  executables -- for example, Fedora/Redhat puts it on the $PATH by
  default, and PEP 370 makes it the standard place for unprivileged
  installs of Python packages to put their scripts.

  But unfortunately, Ubuntu's does *not* add this directory to $PATH by
  default, which means that 'pip install' doesn't actually work -- any
  scripts that are installed are inaccessible, and every user has to
  manually add this to their PATH.

Status in python-defaults source package in Xenial:

Bug description:
  Hello!

  The Python package helpfully ships /usr/lib/valgrind/python.supp,
  which is basically the upstream Valgrind suppressions file with some
  suppressions uncommented so they work on standard Python builds.

  Unfortunately those suppressions are tailored for 32-bit systems and
  therefore do not suppress false positive errors in
  PyObject_Free/PyObject_Realloc.

  See upstream bug http://bugs.python.org/issue12612 and upstream commit

https://github.com/python/cpython/commit/9264faed068b87888a4605ce36bfc9d158515c42

Bug description:
  The Debian fonts team recently restructured the indic fonts. ttf-indic-fonts
changed to fonts-indic. This is meta package and all packages
ttf-[language]-fonts renamed to fonts-[script/foundry]. In addition to this all
fonts were updated to latest versions from upstreams.
  I request ubuntu maintainers to update the fonts to latest versions and
consider following the debian package naming changes for fonts.
