yes, you are right, the maxima are the extracted treetops.
Unfortunately at present we have two papers submitted but not yet accepted
so there is no official documentation of the tools. For some basic tools

The module outputs the extracted maxima as a vector file, so you should put
there a shapefile (it expects a shp extension).
