Either hooks and eyes - alternately placed (hook then eye, then hook, then
eye etc), in brass, bronze or iron (recommend Annie the Pedlar).
Or buttons and loops - hand made loops in the old fashioned buttonhole stitch
method better than cord, being stronger.
