I just bought some 100% wool gabardine. I'd like to machine wash it, but am
worried I might mess it up. I was thinking--Cold water, tumble dry low. Is
that OK?

Your best bet is to cut a modest size square, measure it and then wash it the
way you want. Measure it again afterwards and see how much it has shrunk up.
Personally, I would wash it in cold water gentle cycle and hang dry (not easy
when you have 10 yards of fabric, but much safer!)
Besides the great suggestions given already, I would suggest using either a
clear shampoo in a small amount, or a product like Eucalan, which is a no-rinse
wool wash. Wool shrinks from heat and agitation, but each wool is going to
react differently, especially since many modern wool fabrics are
I use 100% wool a lot and I always put it through a hot wash
(sometimes a boil wash) before I do anything with it. Depending on
the size of the piece it may also go in the dryer as well.
I haven't managed to ruin a piece yet :-D (I treat silk in the same way :-})

Whoever asked the original question was wondering about washing gabradine,
correct? Gabardine is made of combed, highly twisted fibers. It's never
going to felt, no matter how you try.
Wool is weakened when it's wet, and washing is hard on it. At the very
least, use a hand wash cycle and drip

Thanks to all for the advice. I washed it on delicate (tumbling washer),
warm. Tumble dried it on the lowest setting and it came out fine. I'll
probably hand wash and drip dry after it's made, though.

I agree with C. below. You just never know. And, just because you get it
through one wash in the machine doesn't mean you can do it again. The
agitation REALLY makes a difference.
