Not really suggesting that sad irons are the way to go (although in some ituations an iron with a bit of weight in it would be good so I don't have o put so much arm power into pressing seams etc.) And I think that is one of the advantages of a gravity-red iron--the iron itself is heavier

There is a product called Stiffy?( used by crafters who do lace figurines). I think it has a plastic ingrediant that may work..? Other wise, try edging the brim with hat wire or 18 guage wire which is whipped on the edge by hand...unless you are adept with a zigzag on your sering machine.

The ones I've worked with have one set of prongs that go through the fabric, then the stone is set into it, trapping the fabric between the backing and the stone. But if you sewed the backing on first on top of the fabric, then set the stone, you wouldn't harm the fabric. And you could remove them
