Does anyone know the name of some software that will take a photo and grid
it for cross-stitch? I know there are people who will do this if you mail
them the photo. But I wonder if they are doing this in some computer
software or by hand.
Yes. I found several, and I liked the HobbyWare
I found another software demo, and it does capture great detail. It is

I use easy cross from Fulford software. Reasonably cheap and very easy
to use.
You can specify Anchor, DMC etc. for the thread list and the chart can be
printed at your preferred size. I usually print charts at 8 or 9 squares
to the inch, it makes them easy to follow.

I downloaded a demo version of X-Stitch Studio from here:

I have been playing with it and you can only get details of images when you
go into 18+ count aida cloth. I am putting an old fashion plate into the
software and can't get details of the face.
