Re: [h-cost] Job opening: asst. professor, costume design

2008-02-11 Thread LLOYD MITCHELL

You mean they might get situated elsewhere?
My campus shop was in a U-shaped building at the opposite end from the
theater...right next to the dressing rooms...in the basement of course! In
our old theater one usually had to change costumes in the wings; in the new
one they do the same because there is no time to travel. I was consulted in
the planning stage but then the boss for the construction design red-lined
99% of my requests and suggestions. No storage space, design space,
maintenance equipment, laundry, or showers for performers. The building was
airconditioned..but not in the costume area. And it adervitised all the
time about being state of the art! Now, when they built the new Sports
facility, all these areas of concern were well taken care of.

Re: [h-cost] 14th C. hairnets

2008-02-11 Thread Beth and Bob Matney

Here's a bit more info:

One of the nets is netted from 2-ply silk threads in green and white with
arms embroidered in silk and gilt silver thread. The arms were embroidered
on coarse linen ground and then sewn on to the net.
The other net is made from narrow woven silk bands, white, with parchment
bits sewn on to the crossings. The parchment was probably once blue. I have
long since wanted to reproduce that net, and I even managed to get parchment
and silk bands, but I haven't found the time yet.

Both nets come from art and antiquity sales, so their provenance is not
known, and dating is a little unsure because of the same reasons. They
probably date to the 14th c. though.

Greetings,
Katrin

RE: [h-cost] Thank You Albert (OT) plus some Miss America info

2008-02-11 Thread Sharon Collier
A good case is the Mountain View performing Arts Center. It was designed
with a lovely fly loft. But a city architect thought the fly loft spoiled
the look of the building, so he cut it down by half. (at least, that's the
story I heard, but it is so believable)

Amen, Brother! I am constantly amazed by how much these theater design
professionals make on designing such non-functional crap. I have been in
only a few places that really show some (pardon the phrase) intelligent
design. On a good note, our Brother and Sister writers will hopefully soon
be back. As a side note, any one interested in some pics of Miss America
gowns? The MAP is moving their offices from one of the venues I'm working
at. The gowns and some shoes (from the show us your shoes schtick of the
MA parade) will probably not be there long. There are about 7 gowns and 15
pairs of (mostly silly) shoes. Let me know within a few days and I'll take a
camera in and snap some pics. Cheers, Mike T.

[h-cost] Viking Women's Dress - New Discoveries

2008-02-11 Thread Linda Walton
I came across this news item, and thought it might interest some group
members:-

Women who lived in the major Viking settlement called Birka in the 9th
and 10th centuries dressed in a much more provocative manner than
previously believed. ... When the area around Lake Mälaren was
Christianized about a century later, women’s dress style became more
modest, according to archaeologist Annika Larsson.

It's from The Local - Sweden's News in English
http://www.thelocal.se/9950/20080211/

What a pity there are no pictures of the reconstruction!

Pity there was absolutely no supporting documentation other than this
woman's bare word. Until I see a whole lot more, like what she really said,
where she said it, and what made her believe it. I think I'll stick with
the more conservative view. Bare skin, cold! Mosquitoes and Malaria?

The kitchenette was for washing out paint brushes, of course, and the other
part was for making food for use onstage. (white bread with an apricot half
for eggs, etc.), and for heating the dye water.
