Re: [h-cost] hello out there??

2006-05-20 Thread Sue Clemenger
Sure! Always! giggle
I've got a variety of things going at the moment, some of them peripherally
(sp?) associated with historical costuming, in that they're fiber-related.
I'm preparing wool and yarns at the moment (getting them ready for a weekend
natural dyeing workshop next weekend), and some of that will become
historical clothing and accessories. I've got myself about a pound of
lovely, loosely-plied unmercerized (natural-colored) cotton, half of which
is going to get indigo'd but *good,* with the idea of making Mamluke
stockings from it. I have about three pounds of a 2-ply fingering-weight
wool that has been mordanted, and which I'll dye with indigo, cochineal, and
a blend (not sure if I want purple or green ;o). 3 separate batches, that
yarn, and it will make different pairs of 16th century stockings
(English/Irish).
I'm also processing a couple of raw fleeces, with the aim of spinning it
myself and making woven fabric from it for a couple of earlier-SCA period
outfits. One of the fleeces is a Romney, which is a more modern breed of
sheep, but I lucked out *hugely* with it, and it's such a nice fleece, it
just *needs* to be made into a garment. I have something like 6? 7? pounds
of it, and if my spinning can do it justice, it'll become a tunic done in a
broken lozenge twill.
I'm also making a few new sets of (Western Norse/Danish, 10th c.) garb, all
in linen and wool. Don't have the time to handsew them entirely, though.
I've got a deadline on those, because the single largest regional event for
my SCA area is coming up in early June.
Oh, and I *am* working on a handsewn 12th century (Norman) outfit, using
ideas I got from reading Robin's article of a few years ago.
What's going on in your neck of the costuming world?

Re: [h-cost] hello out there and what's on your dressform

2006-05-20 Thread Penny
I saw earlier this week the thread What's on your dressform and didn't
have time to answer. A lot has been on my dressforms during the past week. I
have been photographing the fashion collection at Virginia Commonwealth
University. I start teaching the fashion history class Monday at the
university. I will be using some of the sturdier pieces in the classroom.
The frial pieces are photographed to show the students projected from my
laptop via a motorized screen.

Some of the collection's costumes are misdated. Each archive box is like
opening Christmas packages... you never know what you will find inside. A
lot of fun! I found a bodice in a box named 1900. The bodice is clearly
not from 1900, as were several other items in the box. I think it might be
date from 1840s or 1860s. My class time frame is from 1860-1990. If this
piece is from 1860, I can use these photos in my class.

Would you all please look at some photgraphs of the bodice and let me know
what time frame you think it is from. The center front and center back have
a point at the waist.

Front view: ( I didn't pad out the waistline curve to show the full point)

hem for you when the weather is this good? :P

No, but I can just imagine. Heck, I have a hard time working up the
interest to do my *own* hemming when the weather is this good. :-)

No problem! Just do what we do here in Canberra, and take the
hemming/sewing outdoors! Find a flat place/patio under a nice tree
that's still colorful, but hasn't yet dropped those gorgeous leaves,
especially if there are a few late-blooming flowers nearby, and you
can't ask for better. My roses are still blooming like crazy, even
after the few nights of light frost we've had recently; although my
birches are already looking a little winter-forlorn, having dropped
just about all their leaves. Sadly, I had to prune a lot of
already-budding branches off of my winter-blooming grevillea shrub this
past week.

I wish I could follow my own advice today, but I'm stuck indoors with a
sinus infection (possibly the flu as well). Maybe next week -- I have
two 16C Italian dresses needing hems. Though we really need rain, I'll
take warm, gentle sunshine if that's all that's offered! (And it's all
that's been offered for over a week now!)

Weather like this is a good argument for having truly portable sewing
kits and beautiful garden pavilions.

The class is for my Kingdom's Royal University, and it will be taught at
a local (Portland area, OR) event in August. I've taught it before, but
there's always stuff to refine.

My big project right now involves revamping a blackwork class that
I'll
be teaching in August--I am digging out docs and pictures, and making
another sampler to go with the class.

[h-cost] Re: What's going on...

2006-05-20 Thread Pierre Sandy Pettinger

Well.

Costume Con 24 starts in less than a week - my Historical competition
entry got done tonight, I'm still building my Fashion Show costume,
I'm running the Fashion Show, so I need to finish writing the script
and find music, I'm the outgoing Corresponding Secretary, so I need
to put all my files on disc to hand over to the next one, and I'm
giving at least one panel and probably more. Plus judging the
Fantasy and SF competition. DH is finishing his Fashion Show
costume, plus he has several panels to give (one of which requires a
DVD compilation), is one of the con co-chairs, and is MC of the F/SF
competition.

I'll be GLAD when Memorial Day is over and I can sleep for a week!!

I've got a variety of things going at the moment, some of them peripherally
(sp?) associated with historical costuming, in that they're fiber-related.

What's going on in your neck of the costuming world?
