[h-cost] OT : Need help finding extra-long fake fur!
Good morning! I need help! We're looking for extra-long fake fur to make the equivalent of a lion's mane. Any ideas where we might find some, or what we could use as a substitute? Thank you! Audrey ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume
Re: [h-cost] OT : Need help finding extra-long fake fur!
In costuming, they often use yak hair, in Cats! they actually teased out yarn and made it all fluffy. On Project Runway a couple of seasons ago Chris March used human hair instead of animal hair (which wasn't allowed. dunno why they got so grossed out, wigs are perfectly normal) - you could buy it by the weft and tease the bejeepers out of it -Judy Mitchell Audrey Bergeron-Morin wrote: Good morning! Audrey, I have had good luck in the past using Denverfabrics.com.? However they do not always have the same furs. The last time I needed some I googled faux fur/fake fur/long hair fur. One can find some of the highend stuff in a random search. Hey, Don't know your budget constraints, but I'm in the middle of costuming The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe for a local theatre and was able to find human hair wefts for my Aslan for $4.99 a bundle (each were several feet long) at a local wig shop that specializes in hair weaving and extensions. The bundles ranged in length from 8 - 14 inches. We calculated 10 wefts would be enough for the entire wig. I was able to get several shades of light to darker browns. Good luck! I can definitely see that typical colonial reaction of anything from the homeland being better, but sheer scarcity would surely lead the colonists to make use of what's around them. I'm also thinking, though, about the many types of native clothing that European frontiersmen adopted, and how American Indians accessorized with trade goods And I was thinking how they would look by the 21st century. Surely they'd start out looking just like back home. Then regular trade would happen, both with the Skraelings and with the home folks. But as with the American colonies, where the various nationalities of colonists started out looking just like back home, things evened out over the centuries to where everybody looks like everybody else now, with only slight variations. I' may be a costumer, but I can't tell European tourists from American tourists from Far Eastern tourists in the Fisherman's Wharf neighborhood, the most tourist-ridden neighborhood in San Francisco. It's only when they speak that I can tell (and thick Australian English from an Oriental tourist is a reality check the first time). -- Carolyn Kayta Barrows -- “The future is already here, it is just unevenly distributed.” -William Gibson -- ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume

2009/9/29 Käthe Barrows kay...@gmail.com: And I was thinking how they would look by the 21st century. [snip] I'm aware of minor differences between modern dress (mostly having to do with the level of formality people consider appropriate for everyday things) but yeah, I'm picturing the modern day results as being pretty similar. But going back a bit further, I wonder if materials that only became common in the 20th century would have been more common earlier? I'm thinking especially of leather; there's been a lot of discussion of leather being used for this, that, or the other historical garment, and the general concensus seems to be either, shyeah, right or later on, maybe once in a blue moon, but not typically. Right now I'm picturing a deerskin redingote (or better yet, schaube) and liking it... -E House ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume

You could try searching for crepe hair. is often used for thatrical make up effects (fake beards, etc) and comes in plaited hanks, in a variety of colours. ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume

Hello Sidney, You are looking for MODERN ballroom gowns? Is this really the appropriate group for modern clothing? We usually discuss historical clothing items. I am sure if you ask for favorite historical ballroom gowns you will get quite a bit. But perhaps you should ask another group of people to do your research on this. Just my thought on this. Assuming some influence from both sides of the merger, what would the resulting mixed-race culture have worn, several hundred years in? As stated, they'd probably look a lot like we do now, 2009 being several hundred years in. Well, I'm interested both in the modern day effects of a successful Vinland colony, and--since it's my favorite clothing era--in 14thC and 15thC Vinland fashions! But I'll take anything I can get. Hmm. Within a couple of centuries regular trade should have been established. And fur would be a major export to Europe. Hey - by the 14th-15th centuries there could easily have been more colonists/colonies from more European countries. That would have Europeanized fashion. And there might not be an America as we know it by the 19thC. -- Carolyn Kayta Barrows -- “The future is already here, it is just unevenly distributed.” -William Gibson -- ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume

2009/9/29 Käthe Barrows kay...@gmail.com: Hmm. Within a couple of centuries regular trade should have been established. And fur would be a major export to Europe. I'm sure that the parts of Europe where it was forbidden to hunt deer would have loved all that imported deerskin! Although maybe with that much being imported, deer would have been huntable again? And imagine cochineal and cotton being available centuries earlier, not to mention chocolate The poor beaver would probably be extinct by now, though. Hey - by the 14th-15th centuries there could easily have been more colonists/colonies from more European countries. That would have Europeanized fashion. And there might not be an America as we know it by the 19thC. Yeah, I don't really think that British colonies would have taken such a strong hold--British immigrants, yeah, but not colonies. I think there may have been some successful Spanish colonies in the south still, though. -E House ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume
