2010-04-19 Thread Penny Ladnier
I am working on an article from an 1899 Designer Magazine. Does anyone know
who published the patterns that are mentioned throughout magazine?

2010-04-19 Thread Katy Bishop
It was the Standard Fashion Company, producing Standard Patterns

The company put out magazines with several names over time, including
The Standard Delineator and The Ladies' Standard Magazine The
Standard Designer and eventually just The Designer

Past Patterns offers copies of several of their 'teens patterns.

Re: [h-cost] Wigs for the gray :)

2010-04-19 Thread Bambi TBNL
the open hair braids used to do african braids and costing in the ranges of 1-3
bucks a piece are very useful for bending you own colors ANd manufacturing you
own hair pieces. and yu donot have to be a lisenced bueation. good color sens
is helpful but not essential
the way to blend you color is, there are all different colors of this stuff
available so  get more of the predominent color and then some of the shade
slightly lighter and darker and of course...the highligh wich would be white.

iff you are lucky enough to find you color to begin with skip this step
then using a large wire brush that you have c-clamped to a stable table,  taks
small sections of the hair having separated it out side of the poackage and
blend it by sort of drawing it over and over again through the wire brush
adding more as you go along.
When you get the color you want... bind the end tightly with thread about an 3
inches from the end then bend it over to make a loop and bind again..unless you
are attatching to some sort of hair clip or something. you might also dip it in
a bit of silicon glue like calking or hot glue to stabelize it.  once it it
firmly attatched you can trim it and form the shape of the piece you want.
If you want curlsset on  plastic rollers that slef clamp like sponge
rollers.
dip in water that was boiling and just removed from the heat, till fully heated
through then take out of water and allow to cool.
If you want a braid you can braid smoothly first and then also dip in the hot
water to SET the braid to keep it neater.
hopefully this will help if you dont find what you want.

We get hairpieces for Dickens, and they come in various %s of grey. I will
try and find out who does this. (If they don't reply 'cause they're already
on this list)

So, I  need a referral to an online source that has affordable, gray

hair which can be styled into an Apollo knot for  Regency.
Did a quick Google--didn't find curls, but did find a couple of
falls/switches at Vogue Wigs.  You search by brand, then color, which turns
up several shades of gray, then style.

Katy,

Thank you! Is the The Standard Delineator different than Delineator
published by Butterick? I have a large collection of the Butterick
Delineator from 1880s-1930s. I have not seen Standard before the name in my
collection. I only have a few Designer magazines.

Re: [h-cost] Designer Magazine Pattern

2010-04-19 Thread Katy Bishop
It's a different company, The Delineator was published by Butterick
and they are two very different publishers in direct competition.

These are the dates I have in my own collection:
Ladies' Standard Magazine 1893
Standard Delineator 1895-96
Standard Designer 1896-98
The Designer 1898-1925

Delineators 1875-1926

So many more Delineators and Butterick patterns survive than the
Designer magazines or Standard Patterns.

[h-cost] CC28 Stage

2010-04-19 Thread Pierre Sandy Pettinger

Henry has asked me to announce the stage dimensions for all CC28 events.

The stage will be 12 feet deep by 24 feet wide. Entry and/or exit
will be from the two sides. Unfortunately, there will not be an area
on the stage for staging entries. There will be a staging area at the
base of the stairs.

If you have any questions, please direct them to Henry so he can
check them out.

[h-cost] Arty recycling of garments

2010-04-19 Thread Lavolta Press
Today I've been hand-sewing cotton lace onto the bottom of an almost-new
summer-weight slip-dress I bought off eBay (to replace a flounce that
was much too long) and I'm wondering: How many adults are doing arty
recycling of garments and linens? By arty I mean more than just buying
something second hand and altering it to size. (So my alteration to the
bottom of this dress doesn't really count, but it still looks good.) I
mean something closer to wearable art, where it looks like you altered
the garment in a creative way. Everything I see on this subject looks
like it's intended for teenagers and also for beginning sewers. Of
course there's nothing wrong with being either a teenager or a beginning
sewer. But, are many adults who are experienced sewers doing arty
recycling? Or are they just altering garments in a conservative way or
just for size?
