Re: [h-cost] Cabbage question

2011-04-19 Thread Brenna Sharp
If nothing else - purses, trimmings, collar and cuff linings, modesties,
cloth belts, hats, lesser-priced smaller garments (jupons, bodices,
waistcoats) for children and smaller adults or even larger adults who didn't
mind clever piecing.

And don't forget, this applied to silks as well as wools and linens and also
cottons when available. In short, _everything_; sometimes even including
bits of ribbon and other woven edgings and cordings Buttons, hooks,
etc. were priced by the each so there were no 'leftover' bits, there.

Of course, what was done with the cabbage? I can't see good wools being
used for dustrags, yet there's no evidence of American-style patchwork
quilting until the 18th Century.

Re: [h-cost] a costumer's term question

2011-04-18 Thread Brenna Sharp
Apparently, tailors, etc. could, by custom, keep any fabric leftovers that
were too small to really do much with - the pieces that were no larger than
a cabbage leaf.

Have to admit, I can't recall what documentation there may be for this
definition... :-(

Dunno 'bout anyone else, but I've seen some pretty big cabbage leaves over
the years meself. g

Why are they scraps called cabbage? That's new to me but then I don't know
all the terms for costuming or garb technology.

Re: [h-cost] Corset patterns and research questions

2011-03-24 Thread Brenna Sharp

Dear Michael,

Please bear in mind this is meant in friendship (and experience) not
animosity

May I recommend that you invest in some existing patterns that are _similar_
to what you're thinking of (and maybe some that are not) and fitting/making
them up to fit various shapes on _live_ models .

short-waist - Ack! the top edge is cutting into my armpits!
long-waist - Um, this is nowhere _near_ covering my bust...
amply-endowed, average, and 'forsaken' fullnesses
- and every combination thereof!

After that, I think you'll begin to have an idea of what corset-makers deal
with. g This is the main reason why there are so many patterns out
there. Some fit one type, others another, none truly fit _all_ types.

Yours in Service,
Europa / Kitty / Kate

btw - what's that alphabet soup after your name, eh?

[h-cost] Pinking machine - was: Has anyone tried any of these on fabric?

2011-02-22 Thread Brenna Sharp

Oh, oh, Anne ...

Take a few pictures of it and post them with a link (can't remember if the
list will carry attachments...).

Also look it over - there _has_ to be a least one 'manufacturer's plate' on
it or maybe it's molded into the body. If it's molded in and you can't read
it well, do a pencil-on-paper rubbing to bring out the sculpting. :-)

I, for one, would like the info! :-)

Please and thank you!

Alas, I have not seen any Fiskars/rotary blades that successfully
duplicate 18th or 19th C pinking designs. There are approximations,
but none exact that I have seen. I've been looking. . . for 20 years!
