Umm... this looks closer to 1930s, perhaps late `30s. Jessica Lange's gown
is closer to 1890s-1910 but they aren't commenting on her dress and calling
it a flapper dress.

Yeah...it has no flapper influences except maybe beading on a
sheerand many periods have that. The cut, shape and style is 1930s. Of
course
flapper is a lousy term anyway.

Reminds me of a picture and paragraph in some Fashion section making fun of
a look with a huge wide brimmed hat, full bottomed wig and breeches as
Noblis Oh Please!... and being 16th century! Full bottomed wigs in the 16th
century? It's hard to make fun of something when you can't even get the
century right yourself. They probably meant 1600's (late) but of course that
is the 17th century.

It's like the review of Dangerous Liaisons that kept talking about the
Renaissance!

I once read a review around 1998 that said the film The Heiress took
place at the turn of the century. They get a mild pass because the film opens
with the title 100 years ago. But the reviewer forgot the film was made
in the 1940's and apparently didn't notice Morris went off to the CA Gold
Rush.

Well, yeah. I was more quoting the article than dating the gown--the
movie it was inspired by(? or a costume from?) is supposed to be
1920s. Either way, it doesn't look like it's supposed to be a repro
to me--it looks inspired by.

I do see that silhouette in films of the very late 20s, though. This
dress could probably pass as '29 or even high fashion '28 to my eye,
which admittedly hasn't been trained through actual serious study of
the period, but rather through my fascination with silent movies. =}

PS--there are ever so many silent film clips on YouTube

I'm sitting here on the couch with my laptop, reading H-Costume, and
watching David Letterman. As I clicked on your link above, Drew
Barrymore is sitting on Dave's couch, wearing the SAME DRESS !!
