[h-cost] How do I wash?

2009-11-03 Thread Sharon Collier
I just bought some 100% wool gabardine. I'd like to machine wash it, but am
worried I might mess it up. I was thinking--Cold water, tumble dry low. Is
that OK?

Your best bet is to cut a modest size square, measure it and then wash it the
way you want. Measure it again afterwards and see how much it has shrunk up.
Personally, I would wash it in cold water gentle cycle and hang dry (not easy
when you have 10 yards of fabric, but much safer!)

Re: [h-cost] How do I wash?

2009-11-03 Thread Kimiko Small
Besides the great suggestions given already, I would suggest using either a
clear shampoo in a small amount, or a product like Eucalan, which is a no-rinse
wool wash. Wool shrinks from heat and agitation, but each wool is going to
react differently, especially since many modern wool fabrics are coated with
chemicals to prevent or minimize shrinkage. Not in every case, so testing is a
must. My wool gabardines usually have minimal shrinkage on washing and drying.

The only wool I've had a problem with was a wool crepe, that went from a lovely
thin fabric to a small yet thick wool sponge like texture. Thankfully that was
only the test swatch, but it has stopped me from using the fabric on a project
at this point.

I use 100% wool a lot and I always put it through a hot wash
(sometimes a boil wash) before I do anything with it. Depending on
the size of the piece it may also go in the dryer as well.

I haven't managed to ruin a piece yet :-D (I treat silk in the same way :-})

I ruined a beautiful cloak
I prewashed in hot, but only once
When it was dirty, I washed in cold, and it shrank

Also, according to an article on felting I just read, pH makes a
difference. The more alkaline your wash is, the more wool will felt
(shrink). Alkalinity opens the scales on the wool fibers so they
hook together more readily. Keys to successful washing of wool
(according to a wool producer):

Constant temperature (apparently it doesn't matter hot or cold, so
long as it stays the same throughout).

Agitation (or lack thereof) - more agitation = more linking of fibers
pH - more alkaline = more linking of fibers

So, keep the temperature constant, don't agitate (or as little as
possible) and use a slightly acidic to pH neutral wash.

And test, Test, TEST!!

Whoever asked the original question was wondering about washing gabradine,
correct? Gabardine is made of combed, highly twisted fibers. It's never
going to felt, no matter how you try.

Wool is weakened when it's wet, and washing is hard on it. At the very
least, use a hand wash cycle and drip dry.
