"Robert Louis Stevenson's St. Ives," a BBC film with Jean-Marc Barr, Miranda Richardson, Richard Grant, and Anna Friel. I often find Robert Louis Stevenson's swashbucklers, taken straight, to be so excessive as to be absurd. This production goes right ahead and, while still providing nonstop adventure, intentionally takes the humor right over the top. The production values are excellent, though you do have to be prepared for a balloon that takes off without the gas being heated by anything, and, though the film is set in the Napoleonic era, hearing later background music such as Offenbach's can-can (for a galloping horse scene). What the heck. I was laughing the entire time.
