Well, a .org.il would be more indicative of our Israeli nature, but
I guess .org is nice if you're thinking of growing abroad.

I thought about something along the lines of:

http://welcome.linux.org.il

It is even for free, because we already have linux.org.il, and it is so
intuitive. We can also have a link from the top of the page of
linux.org.il, as we had a link from the top of haifux.org last year.

w2l is an internal slang, I don't think it is catchy for newbies.

I think it would be best to use http://www.linux.org.il/ -- The domain is
used for newbies anyway, we can link to the current version of the portal,
or simply combine the lectures site with the existing portal.

I think Orna is right, the problem is that many people expect all
domains to start with a www.
We can of course use www.welcome.linux.org.il but this seems too long...

I've managed to configure group toggling using Alt+Shift, to make apps
ignorant of whether or not I'm in the 'il' or 'us' group for the
purposes of Ctrl+something interpretation, to have the numpad keys
function as arrows when NumLock isn't pressed (even when Shift is
pressed), and even to get Nikkud sort of working (using RCtrl as a third
level switcher and the si1452 variant).

What I would like to be able to do, and hope someone else has done and
can help me with the configuration of, is the following:

(high priority) change the behavior of CapsLock so that when I'm in the
'il' group, with CapsLock 'on' state, and Shift and RCtrl unpressed,
typing letters will emit capitalized latin letters (e.g. by switching to
 us group, level two).

have you tried the one of the options caps:shift_nocancel and
caps:internal_nocancel ?

For some reason it does not work for me, though.

(low priority) make an additional change in the behavior of Shift and
CapsLock, so that if CapsLock is 'on', Shift is a switch for third
level, and if CapsLock is not 'on', Shift is a group toggler.

Have a look at /etc/X11/xkb/types/caps . Maybe try changing the line:

   map[Shift+Lock] = Level2;

to:

   map[Shift+Lock] = Level3;

Both of these are definitely tricky and may not even be possible without
breaking some xkb principles; if this is the case, do say so. Any other
thoughts/suggestions on this matter are welcome.

 Eyal

PS - right now I'm using

 setxbkmap -option
 grp:switch,grp:shift_toggle,srvrkeys:none,numpad:microsoft,lv3:switch
 us,il -variant ,si1452

I'd add:

-model pc104
(just in case this is not set in your xorg.conf). This should allow you
to use key combinations with the windows and menu keys. I also
rather use grp:win_switch that grp:switch , as it gives me a switch key
on both sides of the keyboard (just like the shift key).

 or its xorg.conf equivalent.

[Haifux] [W2L MEETING] Welcome to Linux 2004 - Ignition

2004-08-05 Thread Orna Agmon
Dear All,

Next Monday (9/8/2004), 18:30, we begin arranging Welcome to Linux
2004, which is to be Haifux's 6th series. This year we are going to try
to join efforts among Linux Clubs in Israel: Haifux (Haifa), Telux (Tel
Aviv) and the newly re-forming JLC (Jerusalem).

The events we plan will include:

A Linux day, including an installation party -
New ideas from Telux are that there may not be a need to install
computers. Still, another purpose of the party is solving problems on
brought computers, configuring hard stuff, and demonstration and
interaction. So this should be discussed.

A series of 6-8 lectures, ranging in time from about the second week of
the semester until no later than the mid-term exams. Topics and order of
lectures will be discussed. Last year's schedule of Haifux's events is to
be found here, along with slides:

http://www.haifux.org/newcomers/timetable.html

Lecturers and assistants will hopefully be set. Slides may be shared
between the Linux Clubs.

In the meeting on Monday, you can volunteer to be in charge of a topic.
These topics range from educational to Public Relations to installations:

A person in charge of the Linux Day in Haifa
A person in charge of each Lecture (and an assistant)
A person in charge of all the lectures
A/Some person/s in charge of choosing and preparing the distribution
(possibly the same person in charge of a Linux Day some place)
A person in charge of relations with sponsors
A person in charge of PR
A person in charge of feedback (designing feedback forms, distributing,
collecting, analizing)

A recent development:
Burning Disks: Hamakor have already announced their intention to burn CDs
of Kazix and Ehad (or something similar). See:
http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg01373.html
Hamakor also intends to work on sponsors and newspaper ads, according to
the same mail Alon Altman sent.

We meet in the Technion, Taub 3. See http://www.haifux.org.org/where/html
for arrival details.

If you wish to be in charge of a topic, it is advised for you to show. If
you wish to voice your opinion, come along. If you just wish to see what
is going on, you are also welcome.
If you wish to help around during the installation party, and you do not
wish to affect any decisions, there will be a dedicated meeting later on.

Attendance is free (you do not get paid, though...), and you are all
invited!

Future Haifux lectures include:

Latest kernel developments by Muli Ben Yehuda and Orna Agmon + 5-th haifux
birthday party on 16/8/2004
Web Hacking by Nadav Har'EL on 30/8/2004

We are always looking for interesting lecture ideas, and we will soon
begin to schedule the next season!

Have a subject
you want to talk about? Or a subject you'd like to hear someone else
talk about? email us.

Orna.

[Haifux] Our mails are on the web

2004-08-05 Thread Orna Agmon
Hi all, and especially those who are in charge of the mirror

I just noticed that on the berlios archive of haifux-discuss

http://lists.berlios.de/pipermail/haifux-discuss/

email adresses are not hidden, unlike on mail-archive, the server we use
for Haifux.

What can be done (and by whom?) to take our mail adresses off the web (or
at least obfuscate them)?

Thanks,
Orna.
