Re: [Haifux] KDE?
KDE is of course not related to networking, but, as I said, networking worked with 4.0 but not in 4.2. I guess it is an issue of integration with the distribution.I was not motivated enough to try to solve the problem, and I removed 200MB or so of KDE. I will just wait for Kubuntu 9.04, and give it another good try then. Re: KOffice, I asked that it is installed in the lab, so that students could play with it, and see that there is a diversity of tools to choose from. IMHO, LaTeX is the best for most tasks which take more than 1 to two pages. Open Office is better developed and more compatible with common formats, furthermore, there is a native Windows version. I really think that pushing Koffice is a mistake at this point, with all due respect to the Koffice team. I fully support the Koffice efforts and we really need competition in the area, but right now the non-MSO market needs one consolidated player, and that is OOo. -- Dotan Cohen http://what-is-what.com http://gibberish.co.il א-ב-ג-ד-ה-ו-ז-ח-ט-י-ך-כ-ל-ם-מ-ן-נ-ס-ע-ף-פ-ץ-צ-ק-ר-ש-ת ا-ب-ت-ث-ج-ح-خ-د-ذ-ر-ز-س-ش-ص-ض-ط-ظ-ع-غ-ف-ق-ك-ل-م-ن-ه-و-ي А-Б-В-Г-Д-Е-Ё-Ж-З-И-Й-К-Л-М-Н-О-П-Р-С-Т-У-Ф-Х-Ц-Ч-Ш-Щ-Ъ-Ы-Ь-Э-Ю-Я а-б-в-г-д-е-ё-ж-з-и-й-к-л-м-н-о-п-р-с-т-у-ф-х-ц-ч-ш-щ-ъ-ы-ь-э-ю-я ä-ö-ü-ß-Ä-Ö-Ü ___ Haifux mailing list Haifux@haifux.org http://hamakor.org.il/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/haifux
Re: [Haifux] KDE?
Dotan, The policy I would like to promote is that of diversity. OOo is great, but people should be able to choose between (at least) LaTeX, OOo, LyX, AbiWord, and KOffice. KOffice is more slick, but less compatible. I think that students should be exposed to a variety of tools. If I had to force them into anything, I would (just as Orna said) push LaTeX, which is the best for the education of CS students. The differences between the others are minor for small documents, and for large documents, all but LaTeX would fail. My personal policy is: 1. If it one page, give it to a secretary to do. 2. If it is two pages, do it yourself using which ever word processor you have. 3. If it is 3-10 pages software design document, write it in Google docs. 4. In all other cases, write it in LaTeX. [Haifux] KDE?
Ok, I downloaded and installed KDE 4.2 on 8.10. I was impressed with the bells and whistles, but was not converted. For one KOffice did not work (I guess it is a distribution issue, but did not want to spend time on this. Second, the wireless did not work, so I had no connectivity (it was working with KDE4.0). So, I guess I will stick with Gnome until 9.04, at which time I will reconsider. Fedora, SuSE and othe distributions are great, so I hear, but we cannnot move to them in the lab. Too much of a hassle and compatability with other Technion computers. This is not to say that we will discorage users from installing kubuntu, fedora, suse, etc. ___ Haifux mailing list Haifux@haifux.org http://hamakor.org.il/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/haifux
Re: [Haifux] KDE?
wifi is not related to kde. It is related to the correct drivers and the kernel configuration. If it worked with older kernel, it should work with this one as well.
