I'll second the suggestion of X-Plane. It's a great bit of software, with the advantage that the flight model is sufficienty realistic to allow you to model your own design of aircraft (which I would suggest would be the next step in this project). You might like to talk to TRANSAS (Portsmouth)

I've been using it for years. Flown a boeing from new york to london. Hardware wise it's always been quite intense. nVidia GPU's however has always surpassed it's need. I still play it sometimes today on a netbook PC. Dual core AMD w/ ATI 9000 series mobile graphics. Joystick I've used was
