 Yes, 1.4 is still compatible with older versions (back to at least 1.1).
 That's why I'm somtimes particularly picky about the config file syntax,
 I want as much as possible to keep this compatibility.

Sounds good, I'll update those packages in EPEL then.  It will probably
be at least week or so before I get to it.  I'll be at a conference until
next week.

As the maintainer of haproxy in EPEL, I would be happy to update haproxy to the
1.4.x in EPEL if 1.4 is backward compatible with the 1.3 configuration files.

It looks like I haven't updated Fedora to haproxy 1.4, I will make sure that F14
is on haproxy 1.4 soon.

Yes, 1.4 is still compatible with older versions (back to at least 1.1).
That's why I'm somtimes particularly picky about the config file syntax,
I want as much as possible to keep this compatibility.

That works like a charm! I've put my own built rpm here, in case someone
else needs a quick fix:

http://files.netmatch.nl/RPMS/haproxy-1.4.8-1.x86_64.rpm

(although of course no one should trust binaries untrusted people
precompile)

You might want to add: --define 'dist .el5'

Ah, sorry my mistake, it's in the EPEL Testing repositories, which are 
generally stable in my experience, but you may not want to risk it
