Late reply on this Paul. Down south (i.e. here), there seem to be
periods around the equinoxes when signals from east Asia and Oceania
peak near local sunset at the transmitter, and also at local sunrise
at the receiver. There is speculation that low loss ducting between
E and F layers of the ionosphere might be involved, with the
ionosphere tilting at the terminator to accept or deliver high angle
signals. I wonder if that is happening in your case?
Of course, at this time of year, Asians heard here seem more likely
to peak when there is maximum darkness between the transmitter and
receiver, with occasional instances of sunset/sunrise peaks, and
these seem unpredictable.

I know what it starts to break up at sunrise, that's obvious.. but it's
never really present before 1830UTC, why is that? It's still dark in Japan,
barely past Midnight local time, so one would think I could hear it well
when it's dark in both places.
Also why does the signal take such dramatic dives? Those dives happen
everyday.
I'm sure there's a reason for this and with the extreme cold I'm now
dealing with, I just like to figure this out so I can figure otu the best
times to go out and maximize the signal I hear/can get.
