Radio Waves:? Stories Making Waves in the World of Radio

Because I keep my ear to the waves, as well as receive many tips from others
who do the same, I find myself privy to radio-related stories that might
interest?SWLing Post?readers.? To that end:?Welcome to the?SWLing Post?sRadio
Waves, a collection of links to interesting stories making waves in the world
of radio.?Enjoy!

Many thanks to?SWLing Post contributors Alan, Mike, and Dave Zantow for the
following tips:

Government to fully digitize Radio Pakistan (Radio Pakistan)

The incumbent government, under its vision of introducing modern trends and
technology in different sectors, has planned to fully digitize the state-owned
Radio Pakistan.

This information has been revealed in official documents during the ongoing
week-long national workshop on Digital Radio Migration policy of Radio Pakistan
at Pakistan Broadcasting Academy, Islamabad.

The digitization will bring about a revolution in the field of broadcasting in
the country, and will capture the audience at home and abroad including South
Asia and Central Asia and the Middle East through quality news, current affairs
and programs.

Under the plan, the biggest 1000-Kilowatt DRM Medium-wave transmitting station
of Radio Pakistan will be set up at Fort Monroe hill station in Dera Ghazi Khan
district in South Punjab at an estimated cost of three billion rupees.

It will be the first ever most powerful but digital transmitter of Radio
Pakistan that is to be established in center of the country as part of Phase-II
of Digital Radio Migration policy and it will help cover the entire population
of Pakistan with crystal clear and noise-free waves.

The project has already been approved by the federal cabinet while the Punjab
government has been asked to acquire land for the said purpose.

Under Phase-II of DRM plan, five DRM+FM transmitters of 10-kilowatt each will
be installed in Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Faisalabad and Multan in the
existing Radio Stations.

Besides, eight DRM+FM transmitters of five kilowatt each will be installed in
Quetta, Peshawar, Gilgit, Skardu, Gwadar, Mirpur (Azad Kashmir), Khairpur and
Narowal in the existing radio stations.

The phase-II of the plan would be accomplished in three years with an overall
estimated cost of 3,153 million rupees.

And under Phase-III of the plan, four DRM medium wave transmitters of
100-kilowatt each will be installed in Lahore, Skardu, Quetta and Peshawar for
strategic purposes.[?]

BBC Radio to close more medium wave transmitters (Radio Today)

The BBC says it is closing a further 18 medium wave transmitters across
England, Scotland and Wales in the next stage of its plan to cut costs.

Services being closed range from BBC Radio Solent?s two AM frequencies on the
South Coast to BBC Radio Scotland?s service in Aberdeen.

Six more BBC Local Radio services will no longer be transmitted on AM ? they
are Three Counties Radio (630 and 1161 kHz), BBC Radio Merseyside (1485 KHz),
BBC Radio Newcastle (1458 KHz), BBC Radio Solent and BBC Radio Solent (for
Dorset) 999 and 1359 KHz, BBC Radio Cornwall (630 and 657 kHz) and BBC Radio
York (666 and 1260 KHz).

Kieran Clifton, Director, BBC Distribution & Business Development explains:
?The majority of radio listening in the UK ? including to the BBC ? is now
digital, and digital listening is continuing to grow.

?This change was planned as long ago as 2011, but we have taken a measured
approach to implement it to ensure that as many of you as possible have already
moved on to other ways of receiving the services before we make this change. We
know that the changes will impact some of you, and that?s why we?re speaking
about the plans again now. We want to make sure that people listening to these
transmissions will be able to use other methods to hear the same programmes.?[?]

Dave?s review of the Lowe HF-250 (N9EWO)

[?]As far as audio quality goes, it?s extremely difficult to beat the Lowe
HF-250. Mind you it has it?s share of ?bug-a-boos? as well.

In our view it has held up much better in it?s old age vs. the AOR AR7030.
Properly operating and in decent condition samples are fairly rare on the used
market now (even more so in North America). Most owners know what the receiver
is and hang on to them. But once a great while one does show up on the used
market. Click here to read the full review.

BBC News suspends 450 job cuts to ensure Covid-19 coverage (BBC News)

BBC News has suspended plans to cut 450 jobs as it faces the demands of
covering the coronavirus pandemic.

The job losses were announced in January and were part of a plan to complete a
?80m savings target by 2022.

Outlets due to be hit include BBC Two?s Newsnight, BBC Radio 5 Live and the
World Service?s World Update programme.

Director general Tony Hall gave staff the news on Wednesday, a week after the
broadcaster delayed the end of the free TV licence scheme for all over-75s.

Lord Hall said ?we?re suspending the consultation on those saving plans?.

He told staff: ?We?ve got to get on with doing the job that you?re doing really
brilliantly.

?It would be inappropriate. We haven?t got the resource to plough ahead with
those plans at the moment, so we?ll come back to that at some point.

?But for the moment we just want to make sure you are supported and you?ve got
the resources to do the job that you and your colleagues are doing
amazingly.?[?]

Ok, a bit of an update:

It's not KZUE, It's not WJTI Milwaukee and it's NOT KZNT. All 3 have
responded to me already with more or less "I dont know who that spanish
voice is". It's not likely to be KRRS.

It's most likely XEYC Ciudad Juarez based upon alot of my previous
reception of other stations. I could hang my loop antenna sideways upside
down backwards form a tree in 50mph winds and my antenna would still like
that stretch of the Desert roughly form central/southern CA to Ciudad
Juarez.

KRRS just replied and the commercial is not them.

I think I can almost conclusively say its XEYC

WORLD OF RADIO HITLIST UPDATE MARCH 30

Hi Glenn, My latest Hitlist update.
https://www.w4uvh.net/hitlist.htm

1) Updated UTC offsets under Croatia, Germany, Greece, Romania
2) Japan - R Japan: Added second link for archived/on-demand shows

The next update will be 5 April to reflect change to UTC offset due to
DST change in New Zealand. Best wishes and 73, Alan Roe

** ANTARCTICA. 15475.97-CUSB, March 30 at 1531, RNASG, LRA36 on again
with a special, tnx tip from Manuel M?ndez. Of three Brazilian
KiwiSDRs, Pardinho is maxed out as too often the case: the best one
has been getting too much publicity; wish they could increase its
capacity. JBA via the one near Rio; better at Campo, so I stick on
there for some Spanish mostly too weak to copy but ID in passing at
1538; 1545 brief feedback loop in talk, then music; 1553 full ID; 1602
this SDR times out after 30 minutes but may be restarted; Signal gone
sometime between 1615 and 1620 tho did not hear a sign-off (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** BRAZIL. 6010, March 30 at 1530, good signal with song in
Brazuguese, on the Rio KiwiSDR still tuned here from my last Colombia
check; so R. Inconfid?ncia is certainly active from BH, at least now
in the daytime; on my way to ANTARCTICA, q.v. (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CANADA. Re my two logs of VY2ZM, PEI on 1845-LSB and 1838-LSB:

``Hi Glenn, I just wanted to comment on this. WPX is the Worked
Prefixes contest, one of the big ones where they activate rarer call
letters for different countries. During contests, which go on for many
hours, the phone operators would lose their voices if they had to keep
calling CQ. So they have it pre-recorded. It often sounds much
different than their voice when they speak to stations which comes
back to the CQ. Contests are only allowed on the older bands 160 to
10, not the newer ones like 17. All the best from Ireland, and keep up
the good work. Regards, Patrick Fitzpatrick``

I was also going to enquire why bother with a VY- call instead of VE-
(or VA-). Not to deny anyone their fun, but this PX tactic seems
totally artificial; still from the same common place, PEI in this
case; administrations complicit in the game (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CHINA [non]. 11880, March 30 at 1505, CRI Plus relay via CUBA is
now here for A-20, ex-15700 at 14-16; S9+20 and undermodulated but
sufficient today. Something`s always wrong at RadioCuba (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

** IRAN [non]. 12005, March 30 at 1509, S9-S5 of song, good ME music;
in HFCC parlance it`s USAGM in Fas via WOF, i.e. Radio Farda in
Persian via Woofferton UK at 13-18; also 11-13 via LAMpertheim,
Germany (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** KOREA SOUTH. 9100, March 30 at 1517, JBA carrier, no doubt Echo of
Hope; Ron Howard and I agree it was on 9095 yesterday (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. RF 23, March 30 circa 1525 UT, underpowered KSBI OKC is
decoding thru one of my antennas with a little tropo help, viz.: 52-1
KSBI-DT, 52-2 BOUNCE, 52-3 LAFF, 52-4 GRIT, 52-5 MYSTERY, each PSIP
all-caps. This matches rabbitears.info with 51-2 as MyNetwork, but not
a.k.a. nickname ``News 9 Plus`` --- that`s only on RF 25, KWTV 9-2.
52-1 takes CBS programming sometimes when bumped off KWTV 9-1,
especially tornado season and now CV to boot (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SWAZILAND [and non]. 9585, March 30 at 1523, fast SAH between two
equal signals colliding, one in Chinese? HFCC shows TWR in
Malgache/French until 1525 and CRI Japanese from Xi`an during whole
hour (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TAIWAN [non]. 5800, UT Mon Mar 30 at 0129, tune-in WRMI just in
time to hear Spanish closing of RTI yet again, another week of tests
at 0100 --- or is this now permanent? Then at 0130.5 into R. Prague //
9395, replacing WOR which aired on both exactly one week ago (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY [non]. 9830, March 29 at 2200, NO signal from VOT English to
N America on the first day of A-20, but no NAU RTTY either, just my
internal birdie. 2222 checking via UTwente, nothing there either, nor
on ex-5960 which was starting at 2300. Something`s always erroneous at
Emirler --- sporadic operation then and now (long before any CV
excuse).

9515, March 30 at 0337, trying again for VOT English to W North
America on new A-20 schedule from 0300. Oops, latest HFCC shows NOT
sked on 9515 like A-19, but on 7275 not only for Europe but North
America, invading our 40m hamband! and 7275 was heard the night before
by Jon Collins in UK. That I must check; the // for Asia now 6165
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2027 monitoring: reconfirmed gone
from Sunday March 29 airing at 2130 on WRMI 7780, rather something
musical on poor signal. Attrition of 7780 airings in the 21 UT hour to
zero means the remaining ones are all in the middle of the night in
European target, altho good in the evening for NE America, SE Canada
on the way.

7780, UT Mon Mar 30 at 0130, confirmed on WRMI, fair --- but NOT on
5800 like last week, nor 9395 which had been // before then. Both of
those are now carrying R. Prague International, in English, Sunday
Music Show. Permanent change, or confusion?

WRN via webcast and satellite, UT Mon Mar 30 at 0130, WOR 2027
confirmed here one UT hour earlier now that UK is on BST, even tho
this service is for N America, which timeshifted two sesquiweeks ago.

Also confirmed UT Mon Mar 30 at 0230 on WRMI 7780, fair.

Also confirmed UT Mon Mar 30 starting at 0303.5 on Area 51 webcast,
after raucous laughter from Julie`s Wild Kingdom; fair S9+10 on WBCQ
5130 at 0313 check.

Also confirmed UT Mon Mar 30 at 0337 the 0330 on WRMI 9955, fair S9
and no jamming.

Also confirmed Mon Mar 30 from 1800.5 on IRRS 7290, VG via UTwente
SDR, now shifted one UT hour earlier for summer time. Already on 7290
at 1757 with music fill, 1800 ID and one semi-minute of three FSN
headlines. And now, NO ACI from either side, nor is any sked in HFCC.
However there is some splash from 7280 Vietnam in Spanish, when
musical. Finishes at 1829.5, more FSN for about 5 minutes, then the
so-called `Shortwave Report` which if really 30 minutes (29?) long is
going to get chopped off by 1900*

Next WORs:
0100 UT Tuesday WRMI 7780 to NE
2100 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW
0100 UT Thursday WRMI 7780 to NE

Thanks last week for financial support from Gerald T Pollard, Raleigh
NC, a generous seasonal check in US funds on a US bank, to Glenn
Hauser, PO Box 1684, Enid OK 73702

Thanks this week for financial support from Robert Brunner via PayPal
to woradio at yahoo.com --- PP not necessarily in US funds

Full updated schedule including AM, FM, webcasts, satellite, podcasts:
http://www.worldofradio.com/radioskd.html
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. (7490v), UT Mon March 30 circa 0010 check, WBCQ webcast is
still encoring `Encore`, which supposedly ended a biweek ago. Heard an
announcement for Schumann Fantaisie in C, something by Rameau which
are not on this week`s playlist dated 28/3:
https://www.tumbril.co.uk/playlists
and apparently previous playlists are inaccessible. No complaints
about keeping classical going! Encore is still on the WBCQ 7490
program schedule for UT Monday 00-01.

9455, March 30 after 0200, `Encore` on WRMI with a good signal via
Rochester NY KiwiSDR.

BTW, Brice Avery says his day job is a hospital doctor, so he`s plenty
busy. He says there will be another Encore broadcast this Tuesday
March 31 at 1300 on WRMI 15770, which is NE toward Europe (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 13685-13690-13695, March 30 at 1425, DRM noise from WINB is
gone for A20, not around 15115 either, but forgot the NF:
15745-15750-15755 at 11-17 M-F; the rest, per HFCC: 0830-1100 M-F on
9975-9980-9985; same frequency Sat & Sun 0700-1000 --- really on
weekends too now?? 0700-0830 M-F 7310-7315-7320 (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** U S A. 17774.991 approx., March 30 at 1501, KVOH propagating S4-S6
with jazz, nice for a change, but not for long: ID in English as on
``17.775``, into Spanish about CV-19 with some more jazz mentioned
with accompaniment; unseems like `Frecuencia al Dia` as sked now on
Monday & Friday. As always slightly off-frequency minus from old(?))
transmitter; also as compared to WWV/H carrier on 15000.000. I don`t
see jazz explicitly on the Spanish program schedule, but there is a
`Jazz Session` hour in English, at 1600 Saturdays (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** U S A. 17815, Mon Mar 30 at 1504, no signal from WHRI which could
be on here daily now; heard yesterday so more likely Sundays, a
Special Day for such adherents (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 9795, March 29 at 2229, S9 tonal language, SE Asian?
Rising intonation at end of phrases like Burmese, but unseems that.
HFCC A-20 as of March 28 has a 9795 gap between 21 and 23: NHK
Japanese before, FEBC Iba multilingual westward afterwards. My guess
would be the latter, Philippines in some minolity language. No clues
in expired B-19 skeds either (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

I think KFUO 850 St Louis is stuck on.. I've got sacred/choral music way
way under KOA, but easily noticable.. and it appears to match KFUO's
webstream

** ARGENTINA [non]. 9395, March 30 at 2130, WRMI, expecting to hear
Italian hour from RAE, but instead it`s in Brazuguese! talking about
this being a special program, due to COVID-19 quarantine; RAE relaying
Radio Nacional domestic; no new programs now via WSMI [sic!], but
replays of old shows, and these announcements in the 8 languages; see
website for news. 2139 a bit of tango and into same info in German.
Probably would have heard the other six during the whole hour.

Then I see a report from Ivo Ivanov that today at 1300-1330 on 15770,
RAE relay was in Spanish/Italian/French/Chinese.

7780, March 30 at 2352 I check the RAE `French` semihour via WRMI, and
hear English, music, 2353 into Chinese.

5800, March 31 at 0241, this WRMI is still on with music, RAE French
announcer from home with same info, part of 8-language rotation. 5010
is off and no //s on 5, 7 or 9 MHz bands. 5800 retuned at 0249, has
gone off in meantime at odd hour. (No full survey of WRMIs this
evening) (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA [and non]. 6125, 7355, 7435, March 31 at 0227, the incompetent
DentroCuban Jamming Command with wall-of-noise jamming on all three
against nothing, since in A-20, Radio Mart? this hour is now on 5980,
7335 and 7365 all with NO jamming! Also 6030 with jamming as usual but
unusually atop it (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** KURDISTAN [non]. 11530, March 30 at 2059 tune-in, good signal with
ME song but cut off at 2100*. It`s Denge Welat, best heard here in a
long time; must tune in earlier. Ivo Ivanov also reports today:

``BRB Denge Welat via Grigoriopol/Issoudun March 30
0600-1600 on 11530 KCH 300 kW / 130 deg to WeAs Kurdish, weak+TRT*
1600-2100 on 11530 ISS 250 kW / 090 deg to WeAs Kurdish, very good
* co-ch same 11530 EMR 500 kW / 105 deg to WeAs Turkish R. Erdogan!``
No TRT jamming heard before or after 2100 here (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** NORTH AMERICA. 7475, March 31 at 0211, there he is, anti-Christ
pirate Station YHWH with usual screed, thin modulation, but mostly
readable S8-S9; weaker but still on past 0302. Walt Salmaniw was
hearing him better than ever in BC; while Richard Langley heard him
not at all in NB. This time I beat Rick Barton to YHWH; he in AZ tuned
in at 0315.

Walt continues: ``Unlike most other evenings heard, YHWH has remained
at good/very good level for the last hour I've monitored, with only
occasional fades. Continues at 0335 with, "Christianity, the greatest
hoax". An old program heard many times in the past. Josiah promises to
come back after this hour canned program. 7475 went off at 0402:47 UT
with his brief time check (9:04, but actually was only 9:02 PM Pacific
Time). Can anyone make out his last name? Josiah ??? He mentions it,
but with the tinny audio, it's difficult to hear. 73, Walt`` (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. Correxion to one virtual channel cited, 52-1 MyNetwork,
not 51-2, fixed:

RF 23, March 30 circa 1525 UT, underpowered KSBI OKC is decoding thru
one of my antennas with a little tropo help, viz.: 52-1 KSBI-DT, 52-2
BOUNCE, 52-3 LAFF, 52-4 GRIT, 52-5 MYSTERY, each PSIP all-caps. This
matches rabbitears.info with 52-1 as MyNetwork, but not a.k.a.
nickname ``News 9 Plus`` --- that`s only on RF 25, KWTV 9-2. 52-1
takes CBS programming sometimes when bumped off KWTV 9-1, especially
tornado season and now CV to boot (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 9690, March 30 at 2323, REE is VG S9+30/40 in Spanish; if
M/W/F English were to resume it would be at 2200. 9690 was reported
absent yesterday; anyhow it`s all RNE1 domestic relay now (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 9830, March 30 at 2200+, nothing from VOT English as A-20
scheduled to N America; just RTTY de NAU PR; nor at 2227. Something`s
always erroneous at Emirler.

7275, March 31 at 0256, carrier cuts on and off and on at least
thrice; 0259 IS & ID JBA in English, VP around S7 but no QRhaM as they
are perfectly entitled to impose. Don`t TRT know that in the Americas,
this is a hamband? Did no one at HFCC clue them in? Timesignal at 0300
is accurate with WWV, not late! Usual VOT sign-on to W N America with
schedule including 9785, 9830 for earlier airings, but can`t copy it
completely to detect any errors to be prolonged for the next 7 months.
// 6165 to Asia is a JBA carrier. An earlier tentative version of HFCC
A-20 had this on 9515 like last year, thus our expectation, rather
than down to 7275 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED [and non]. 9795, March 30 at 2158-2200+, no signal, nor
at 2227-2230+, unlike yesterday with something SE Asian(?). Sometime
after 2300 however, when my inkpen failed, 9795 does contain something
like that, presumed FEBC Philippines. Maybe they start an hour earlier
on Sundays (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

This report dispatched at 0442 UT March 31
