[HCDX] Logs

2005-01-16 Thread Terry L. Krueger

All times/dates GMT.

942 CUBA Radio Progreso, unknown location; 0024-0027 15 Jan., still
off-frequency, good and parallel 640, et. al.

950 CUBA Radio Reloj, Pastora, Ciudad de la Habana;1140/1330+ 16 Jan.,
appears to be the source of the tight, rapid warbling. Noted at 1140+, and
still there well after sunrise. Audio otherwise clear. On another note:
despite a recent report elsewhere claiming Reloj runs chimes in place of the
Morse R-R on Sundays, this is not always the case. Occasionally (such as
today), they choose not to, or forget to flip to chimes... or do so later in
the day as per the presumed direction of El Jefe de Campanillas. This has
been the case forever.

1090 MEXICO XEMCA 1090, Pánuco, Veracruz; 1220-1231 15 Jan., XE accordions,
M canned XEMCA Mil-Noventa over music at 1228. Good.

1190 MEXICO XECT Morena, Monterrey, Nuevo Laredo; 1213-1220 15 Jan., fading
up over the unID classical station, w/ commercials for stores in Monterrey
followed by M canned Moreno en Monterrey at 1214, into SP love ballads
(not the usual XE fare, for once).

1190 UNIDENTIFIED 1208-1220 15 Jan., continuous classical piano solo, not
parallel Musical Nacional on 590, or anything audible on 1200, 1210, 1220 or
1230 from Cuba. Good at first, then faded down with XECT taking over
mostly.

1410 ALABAMA WIQR, Prattville; 0004-0012 15 Jan., spots for Montgomery-area
and Central Alabama stores, auto dealerships till 0007, then back to the
Jim Rambo Radio Show (or something like that). Good.

1560 SOUTH CAROLINA WAGL, Lancaster; 2225-2248 14 Jan., booming in w/ M
canned This is 50,000 watts... from Charlotte to Columbia... WAGL... and
into a string of 50's/60's pop songs (Tina Marie, She Was Only 16, Be
Bop-A-Lula), A little later, this was in the mud and the usual pileup of
hets were present.

1560 UNIDENTIFIED 1203-1215 16 Jan., nonstop Muzak marimbas. Not
Enciclopedia (which I'm not tracing on any listed channels of late), as the
tracks were nonstop, i.e., no female announcer between as is the practice
with Enciclopedia. Carrier on at 1210 atop the marimbas, followed by WAGL
s/on at 1215, effectively killing any more listening. Seemed to be a weak
XE in the mix as well with norteñas.

1670 USA unidentified; 1220-1244 16 Jan., yet another asleep-at-the-board
operation under the Georgia station. Continuous approximately ~800 Hz tone
for six seconds followed by M CBS Radio Network, channel ?? [not copiable]
open circuit satellite loop. Fair.

6045 MEXICO XEXQ Radio Universidad, San Luis Potosí, 1320+ 16 Jan., good in
local hash w/ nonstop classical orchestration, no announcements. Presumed
the one as per H. Johnson and B. Wilkner logs. Been a long time since I've
heard this one.

9525.88 INDONESIA Voice of Indonesia, Cimanggis, Jawa; 1310-1400* 16 Jan.,
very good w/ Indo MW between Indo pop vocals, Radio Republik Indonesia Id
1357 by same W over music bed, then orchestral song (anthem?) to 1400 and
plug pulled. No 11785 and 15150 channels untraced.

10,000 NEW MEXICO Yosemite Sam 1235+ 16 Jan. As per D. Crawford tip,
noted weak and apparently truncated (all I could hear was Varmint!) also
spaced far apart, weak under WWV. No trace of 5 or 20 MHz at this time,
where it is also reported to have reactivated at new frequencies. Seems
like a suicidal set of channels to select.

2 NEW MEXICO Yosemite Sam 1447-1645+ 16 Jan., even better here -- very
strong under WWV with the brief data burst followed by Varmint! every
40-ish seconds cycle.

[HCDX] Radio NZ gets ready to stream

2005-01-16 Thread Mike Terry
17 January 2005
By Tom Pullar-Strecker

Radio New Zealand expects to step into the mainstream of online news
publishing in February or March.

The state-owned broadcaster signalled in April that it planned to spend
hundreds of thousands of dollars expanding its online presence and letting
people listen to broadcasts at a time of their choosing over the web.

Chief executive Peter Cavanagh told a select committee that the website
redevelopment was in its second phase and progress has been wonderful.

Its revamped website will include online news, some basic information about
weather and finance and enriched information about programmes, he says.

This may include information that might be some gateway to website links
that our researchers have come across in producing programmes that we think
our listeners might be interested in.

Mr Cavanagh says audio-on-demand will put the control of the radio
schedule in the hands of the listener.

I have very actively championed this project because I believe having a
good, solid online service is now a fundamental part of core business for
public service broadcasters.

It is a bit unreasonable in this day and age when people are so time poor
and they are under so much pressure to rely on them to be available to
listen when we can broadcast programming live.

The audio-on-demand service is estimated to cost $259,000 to set up and
$360,000 a year to run.

[HCDX] SPR4 -AL4 loop

2005-01-16 Thread Patrick Martin
Does anyone have or remember the AL4 SPR4 loop that was an option when
buying the receiver? I have one for the SPR4, but the small coax was
removed and I want to rebuild it. I don't know how the connections were
made to the phone jack. I guess some small coax was used rather than
regular wire. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

[HCDX] Radio AU reported

2005-01-16 Thread NW7US, Tomas
I am receiving reports on Radio AU detected in North America. The solar
wind speed is elevated, and the interplantary magnetic field (IMF) is
oriented southward (negative Bz). I am anticipating the arrival of two
coronal mass ejections, and perhaps we have already seen the passage of
the leading edge of the first one. We are also in the midst of a proton
storm.

Many forecasters are predicting very strong geomagnetic storminess
starting tonight, and lasting through the 17th and into the 18th. This
will most certainly trigger AU mode propagation. Please send reports to
me, if possible, as I would like to track this for reporting later.

For those of you interested, I have two pages that would be helpful for
watching the actual space weather and geomagnetic activity levels, as well
as the Aurora active at a given time.

These are:

Energetic Ion Enhancement Event ( see
http://www.agu.org/pubs/crossref/2004/2003JA010044.shtml )

At 0640 UTC 17-I-2005, ACE detected a proton flux exceeding 1.0e+05 p/cm2
- which simply indicates the probable arrival of the plasma cloud expected
from the flare events reported earlier. It is highly expected that
geomagnetic storm activity will begin over the next 24 hours.

[HCDX] Solar Wind Speed Shock detected - Geo-Storm in 12 hours : Update 0716 UTC 17-I-2005

2005-01-16 Thread NW7US, Tomas
In addition to the Energetic Ion Enhancement Event of 0640 UTC 17-I-2005
(see my last update), a moderate shock has been detected in the solar wind
speed at 0716 UTC, 17-I-2005. The plasma density change was 3.4 part/cc,
with an increase in speed of 78 km/s, and a temperature increase of
171,851.9 degrees K. The Bz went from -0.3 to -1.2 at the same moment.
This is a precursor to the beginning of geomagnetic storminess within 12
hours.
