Warm greetings to all of you !

Nothing unusual was heard on either LW or MW... However the last night, I had
the pleasant surprise of tuning into an Algerian clandestine on 6300 kHz and
almost fell asleep listening to a man chanting the Koran... This was my best SW
catche in a while... Right now, I'm listening to a run-of-the-mil major
international broadcaster from Greece on 9420 kHz (actually it is better on
9421 kHz to reduce adjacent channel splatter from 9415), but is more
entertaining that the endless talk programs coming out of the French
broadcaster and more than pay off of finding the WANTED MOROCCO PEST ON 207 KHZ
RUNNING LOWER POWER ACCORDING TO A GERMAN DXER WHO VISITED PORTUGAL RECENTLY.

Into the logs:

Trans-Atlantic DX

162 FRANCE France Inter, Allouis JUL 5 0320 - "Comment voyager ?..." trip
related px with chatter relating trips to Bretagne (in westernmost France) and
to the Tibet ! Huge, peaking well over a growl from a nearby computer (that was
nulled somewhat when I looped north-east/south-west) and audible a little bit
on the Sangean barefoot just like RMC-216. (Chiochiu-QC)

171 MOROCCO Medi 1, Nador JUL 4 0230 - back-to-back Arabic vocals
interspersed with short comments by a woman in Arabic as well. Very good peaks
(i.e. around 0238 UTC), but also very poor ones with deep and slow fadings, but
not that bad overall. Overall SINPO 45323 + JUL 5 0230 - briefly fair with raï,
otherwise way down in the noises the past night unlike the other night when
they were dominant, by far... They seem to habe dropped the bilengual
late-night French-Arabic request show ! Sad ! They used to carry that show on
weekends and on special weekdays. (Chiochiu-QC)

183 GERMANY Europe 1, Felsberg JUL 4 0246 - playing an oldfashionned French
chanson inside their talkshow... The signal was quite good, but static
scratches made following program content more challenging, even though it was
in French which is almost like a second mothertongue for me ! (Chiochiu-QC)

207 GERMANY Deutschlandfunk, Münich JUL 4 0208 - Tentative with female opera
classical vocal... Very poor and noisy, but QRM-free, almost useless. No sign
of most wanted 207 RTM Azilal even though 171 quickly faded up to huge peaks.
Per SINPO 25221 (Chiochiu-QC)

216 FRANCE RMC Info, Romoules JUL 4 0405 - Very good / huge, interview with a
traveller from Montreal that spoke in accented French ! Audible a little bit on
the Sangean barefoot with the PK antenna on another corner of the room. SINPO
44444 thanks to greyline sunrise enhancement ! (Chiochiu-QC)

252 ALGERIA Alger Chaîne 3, Tipaza JUL 5 0255 - Tentative; two men discussing
in an unID language... Even with local UL NDB on 248 kHz attenuated to a great
extent, the reception was mushy and fadey, the fades were more rapid that those
I'm used to when DXing the lower half of the longwave broadcast band; it almost
sounded like a flea powered signal on shortwave. Probably Algeria as still
hanging on after 0400 with the same pitifully hard-to-follow program content
with the sun shinning brightly at the co-channel Irish transmitter.
(Chiochiu-QC)

6300 ALGERIA RASD JUL 5 0620 - Man chanting the Koran followed by man with
comments in Arabic then what seemed to be a short musical interlude. Fair-poor
overall with utility QRM that was avoided using AM Narrow, but more exciting
than the run-of-the-mil of longwave Trans-Atlantics and the almost inexistent
mediumwave Pan-Americans. NEW ! Very excited about this one ! SINPO 23542
(Chiochiu-QC)

9420 GREECE Foni Tis Helladas JUL 5 2255 - just heard an accented woman
saying "You are listening to the Voice of Greece" in English over a nice
instrumental music jingle. Not as entertaining as the 6300 Algerian
clandestine, but still nice to listen to from time to time. Around 2300 UTC
improved with the 9415 kHz pest signing off ! SINPO 33433 at 2255 UTC and SINPO
45544 at 2300 UTC ! (Chiochiu-QC)

Pan-American DX

640 CUBA CMBC, Radio Progreso, Guanabacoa JUL 5 0406 - Presumed with Spanish
romantic vocals in mess. SIO 323. (Chiochiu-QC)

780 VENEZUELA YVNM, Coro, Falcón JUL 3 0405 - Apparent romantic vocal very
poor in as deep as possible a null of both CFDR and WBBM. (Chiochiu-QC)

6185 BRAZIL Radio Nacional do Brasil JUL 5 0600 - Brasilian pops and ID...
Good atop a fluttery Mexican... SINPO 44544. Seems like Mexico performs very
poorly on SW and Colombia too... This is one of the few remaining South
American domestic SW broadcasters ! Sad ! (Chiochiu-QC)

Domestic DX

88.1 WHDX St Louis, MO 6/30 2005 - faded at the ToH ID, but the man announcer
mentioned St Louis several times. Huge signal almost local-like, EXCELLENT with
some fades ! SINPO 45324 This is the only one from the June 30 opening that I
IDed for sure ! (BC-PQ)

Additionnal comments:
I made a short aircheck of the 6300 mysterious Arabic clandestine
broadcaster... If anyone is interested in it, please let me know !

Also, my encoding cable seems broken once again, so I would go to La Source
next week to replace it ! This is perphaps the most bothersome event in my DX
carrer right now. I don't see myself DXing without airchecking... Last, but not
least, it becomes extremely difficult to find empty tapes... Does anyone knows
for sure when the last Maxell tapes will "leave the market alone" ? I badly
miss them, because my main rigs are also providing high-quality tapes and our
Sony XR-A33 AM Stereo car radio works with tapes, so for me tapes are more than
useful, they are mandatory ! Like I told my YV friends, I'm more into
collecting airchecks than into collecting QSLs, even though I have 3 of them !

Thanks to all of you who answered my inquiry regarding Morocco-207 ! Very much
appreciated ! So it would seem they are better heard on MW than on LW these
days (with CHNC-610 I will start hunting them on 612 kHz providing the solar
activity will still as low as it used to be the last season) !

Before I eave, I would like to suggest the friends from Barinas to purchase a
PK LW Loop, since the huge tropical trees and the poor ground conductivity in
areas such as Barinas are destroying the weak Trans-Atlantic signals on LW !

This report is brought to you by Bogdan Chiochiu in Pierrefonds (Montreal's
West Island), QC DXing LW using the Sangean ACS 818-CST / PK's Shielded
Magnetic loop, MW using the Sanyo MCD-S830 / PK AM Shielded loop and SW using
the Sangean ACS 818-CST / random wire terminated into a broken Yagi in our yard

May the good DX be with you !
Bogdan Chiochiu
