Warm greetings to all of you guys !

I have been taken my Sanyo MCD-S830 to the Hochelaga-Maisonneuve / Montréal-Est
border cottage with no trouble... We had flood two nights this week, so I have
not slept too much this ending week except during the last two nights, but I'm
not that tired overall... On the other hand, I had two or three pleasant
surprises DXing South America and the Caribbean on MW, while condx were
slightly below average as one would expect during such a phenomenal run of
non-auroral ionospheric conditions...

I'm still in DEEP trouble with the cegep's principals, so I'm still away from
school, but at least I can stay up late and DX exciting stations like
Venezuelan Radio Coro, so things aren't too bad overall, but I must admit they
could get way much better...

Into the logs now:

Pan-American DX

555 ST KITTS ZIZ, Basseterre OCT 27 0326 - poor w/ Caribbean calypso and
time-checks. (Chiochiu*HochelagaMaisonneuve-QC)

600 CUBA CMKV, Radio Rebelde, Urbano Norrís OCT 30 2310 - advice regarding
persons sick with H1N1 flu to stay "en un lugar cerrado" (away from anybody)
and to meet as soon as possible "el medico de familia". This medical advice was
followed by a Spanish Adult Contemporary ballad. After about 2330 UTC, their
sports coverage begun, like usually on this station. Very good, over / under
both WICC and CKAT. SINPO 42543-4 (Chiochiu*carMontRoyal-QC)

640 GUADELOUPE RFO, Pointe-à-Pitre OCT 27 0037 - w/ a zouk-love track
followed by "Radio Guadeloupe présente Lionel Ritchie..." with some of his
great hits... Good signal in a big jumble (Radio Progreso, WNNZ Westifield-MA
carrying BBC World Service and weak residual AM 640 out of Toronto) ! SINPO
42532... I haven't heard that one in years ! That is a pleasant surprise, an
almost astonishing one ! Have they increased their power ?
(Chiochiu*HochelagaMaisonneuve-QC)

670 CUBA CMBA, Radio Rebelde, Arroyo Arrenas OCT 30 2317 - Woman in Spanish
talking after the SS AC ballad (in // w/ 600) way over WSCR and slightly over
the WFAN-660 IBOC hiss and the local next-to-adjacent CINF Infos Six Quatre
Vingt Dix 690 splatter ! (Chiochiu*carLachine-QC)

750 VENEZUELA YVKS, Radio Caracas Radio, Caracas, Distrito Federal OCT 27
0115 - Venezuelan baseball coverage... On of the teams was "Los Gavilanes" or
"Los Magallanes". Huge, almost local-like, way stronger than anything else on
this channel (WSB, CMHG Radio Progreso out of Sancti Spiritus).
(Chiochiu*HochelagaMaisonneuve-QC)

760 COLOMBIA HJAJ, RCN Cadena Basíca OCT 27 0026 - promo for a cumbia music
show on RCN "Nuestra TV", time-check, ad for a bank. +OCT 27 0101 - nx segment
about several Colombians who died in Venezuela in places such as "el estado
Táchira" due to the H1N1 swine flu bacteria. (Chiochiu*HochelagaMaisonneuve-QC)

780tent. BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS ZBVI, Roadtwon OCT 29 0104 - Tentative with
reggae music in WBBM null and heavily QRMing La Discoteca del Pueblo on Radio
Coro... All my suspicions lead to ZBVI, but I'm skeptical as sooner or later I
WILL GET AN ID ! (Chiochiu*HochelagaMaisonneuve-QC)

780 VENEZUELA YVNM, Radio Coro, Coro, Falcón OCT 26 0400 - carrying Ruta
Músical 7-80. The beginning of the program featured mostly dark edged tropical
grooves using minor chords, while the follow-up after about 1AM EDT (we are
switching to EST this weekend though) featured mostly happy-sounding cumbia,
vallenato, etc. tropical and traditionnal songs. Very huge peaks, deep fadings
and domestic QRM in WBBM null ! SINPO 43323. I prefer hearing endlessly the
same 2 or 3 regular Latins that, at least, are pretty long-haul from where I
live rather than trying to hear through a deep-pileup low powered short skip
USA stations that belong to the same networks anyway. At least, Radio Coro is a
true regional Venezuelan ! (Chiochiu*HochelagaMaisonneuve-QC)

840 unID OCT 27 0015 - very good mixing with WHAS in Lousville, KY playing
traditionnal Venezuelan music (música llanera). Lost barely two minutes away
before I could secure any ID material. According to the YV DXers on SKYPE,
Radio Juventud (YVMY) in Barquisimeto, Lara is running lower power than it used
to. Given the huge friendship between Hugo Chávez and Fidel Castro, it could be
one of the two Cubans. There is also a domestic here playing Spanish tropical
music, but I doubt it was it, since you won't hear YV mx on USA Spanish
domestics. (Chiochiu*HochelagaMaisonneuve-QC)

870 CUBA CMHL, Radio Reloj, Sancti Spiritus OCT 27 0258 - Spanish news with
clock ticks behind. Good through an annoying WCBS-880 IBOC hash.
(Chiochiu*HochelagaMaisonneuve-QC)

Trans-Atlantic DX

183 GERMANY Europe 1, Felsberg OCT 31 0425 - carrying a Laurent Rouquier
do-you-know general culture game show in the same fashion as the ever-popular
"Des Questions pour un champion" on TV5. Good with some slow fadings in and
out. Generally speaking the signal was good, almost armchair copy ! SINPO
45432. This one is a French "radio périphérique" who started broadcasting from
Germany to escape the French law prohibiting private radio a long time ago
(before private Bayard Presse and state-owned SIRPA started Aventure FM in
1987). Nowadays, Europe 1 can be heard nationwide on FM, but the LW transmitter
is still on from 4 o'clock to 1 o'clock (21 hours out of 24) in order to ensure
coverage in a few remote areas where multi-path hilly or mountainous ground is
disturbing regular line-of-sight FM reception and also maybe for the pleasure
of a few crazy DXers like me. (Chiochiu*Pierrefonds-QC)

252 ALGERIA Alger Chaîne 3, Tipaza OCT 31 0424 - talkshow in French. Very
good above the beacons, but difficult to follow due to the low modulation as
far as the audio is concerned. (Chiochiu*Pierrefonds-QC)

Additionnal comments:

We are going through heavy rain and almost extreme winds, so an electricity
shortage could be expected any time. Therefore, I will keep it short and radio
related.

I took my Sanyo MCD-S830 instead of my Sangean down there... I have a question
though... Have I missed anything on longwave while I was there ? I most admit
Europe 1 is stronger in Pierrefonds than in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve on LW 183 kHz
!

I'm still trying to digitalise most of my airchecks... However, I will be a
long way before I'm able to do that to most of them, as I have a bug on my own
computer that throws heavy noise each time I try to record using a WAVE
software. I will be using my parents computer. If anyone has airchecks of
Canadian AOR (Album Oriented Rock), American AOR, Venezuelan tropical, Romanian
Dance or AOR, French eclectic CHR (like Pacific or Aventure FM), Top 40 or
Dance and Belgian dance radio, please let me know !

I found the Aventure FM airchecks very interesting, musically speaking, however
too short, without any jingle and all the talk was edited which isn't really
appealing to me... If anyone is having Aventure FM tapes, please let me know...
They are scoped musical airchecks, although saying scoped when I'm talking
about the music is a bit heretic...

Has Medi Un changed their directionnal pattern on LW (171 kHz) ? I tried to get
them unsuccesfully, while a MA DXer is reported them with a very good signal,
as strong as BBC Radio 4 a few channels above on 198 kHz ! On the other hand, I
almost felt asleep the last night enjoying Europe 1 on 183 kHz...

That being said, I will reply to everyone who wrote me, as soon as possible !

This report is brought to you by Bogdan Alexandru Chiochiu DXing from the
MTL-EST / Hochelaga-Maisonneuve QTH during the week nights and from the
Pierrefonds (Montreal's West Island) QTH during the week-ends using his Sanyo
MCD-S830 / PK AM loop combo for mediumwave and the Sangean ACS 818-CST / PK's
Shielded Magnetic LW loop for longwave

May the good DX be with you !
Bogdan Chiochiu
Btw. I: Those of you who work in the propagational dep. maybe could help
me...when the next run of auroral or, at least, semi-auroral conditions may (at
least probably) hit the Earth ? What was the pattern of CMEs during the last 3
years ? Curious mind enquires !
Btw. II: Does anyone remember Yes FM 98.7 and 94.7 (WYUL Châteaugay, nowadays
the bothersome Hits FM) ? They used to serves the Sea Way Valley market and
were less powerful than Hits FM ! I have a 45 minutes unscoped aircheck from
November of 1998, a few weeks after they started ! A former student at the
St-Laurent cégep is interested in this wonderful aircheck which is way I was
trying to digitalise my airchecks today, a few hours ago !
