Re: [HCDX] Logs with a new antenna

2021-05-26 Thread Zack Widup
Can you describe your new antenna? Is it a loop?

I have been trying to use a 1.5 meter square loop with 20 turns of wire
with taps at 3, 5, 10 and 15 turns. The 3 and 5 turn taps seem to work the
best for AM BCB DXing but it suffers from a noise level so bad that I can
hardly receive anything through it. I have an e-probe antenna I have been
meaning to put up but haven't gotten around to it yet.

0400 at least, while PB offgoes at 0300.

Even more likely lately is Eritrea, which recently started using 4760, as
Bernardini reported, at the very same hour: ``4760, Voice of the Broad Masses
of Eritrea-2, Asmara, 0302, Feb 27, talks, weak // 7175``.

 Hi Al,
thank you for the interesting loggings! I have also noticed Iran here in
Finland on 1548.5 kHz. Hopefully you can tune in tonight at 1430 and
1530 to catch regional Afghan and Iranian stations. Last winter I heard
Afghans on 1386 and 1500 kHz here.

1242 25 AUG, 2212 UTC, IRAN, IRIB National program, // to all the other
frequencies carrying it. Poor signals with a deep fade. No sign of Oman.

1251 25 AUG, 2210 UTC, IRAN, IRIB National program with female announcer
interviewing telephone caller and light instrumental music. Good signals
for 100kW and alone on the channel.

1269 25 AUG, 2205 UTC, UAE, Radio Asia UAE with Hindi/Malay pops, several
canned IDs and no DJ. Presumed automation. Poor signals this morning and a
fluttery fade. 200kW from Ras al Khaima.

1296 25 AUG, 2202 UTC, AFGHANISTAN (US), VoA (and the rest of the
propaganda stations), local BBG powerhouse here in Kabul with English news.
No chance of hearing anything else on this channel unless transmitter goes
off.

1323 25 AUG, 2200 UTC, IRAN, IRIB Regional, Jolfa with 50kW. daring to be
different and not following the national program, heard with what can only
be described as opera, mentions of Iran, and time pips on the hour under the
opera music! Good signal with occasional fading.

1332 25 AUG, 2153 UTC, PAKISTAN, PBC, call-in show, // 1341, 1404.
Stomping signal with 100kW but having a real showdown with co-channel Iran
at 300kW. The resulting mix was fading up and down on about a cyclic
2-minute interval. One really has to question whether Iran really needs all
these frequencies and high power transmitters.

1341 25 AUG, 2150 UTC, PAKISTAN, PBC, call-in show with many Aleikum
Salaam's and excited callers. Many mentions of Pakistan. Very good signals
and occasional deep fade. Also only 10kW per WRTH.

1359 25 AUG, 2145 UTC, CHINA, CNR1, talks in presumed Mandarin between male
and female announcer with occasional chimes breaking up the talk. Fighting
with co-channel Iran for supremacy. Family Radio from Taiwan (250kW) in
Tagalog heard underneath it all in quiet moments.

1404 25 AUG, 2134 UTC, PAKISTAN, PBC, Long-winded talks by male announcer
with several telephone calls. Several ID's. Presumed on late for Ramadan
or because of the flooding. Good signals and alone on the channel at this
time. Some deep fades. WTRH lists as 10kW.

1431 25 AUG, 2124 UTC, DJIBOUTI (US), Radio Sawa with talks. // 1548. Poor
signal level, but at this time of night, the only player on the channel.

1440 25 AUG, 2116 UTC, SAUDI ARABIA, BSKSA, with General Service in Arabic.
Talks with light music. Powerhouse signal and smothering everything else on
channel.

1458 25 AUG, 2112 UTC, IRAN, IRIB with national program. Good signals
supposedly only 10kW, peaking at S7 and some deep fades. Completely
blocking any chance at Mayotte. Got them earlier in the year when Iran was
off for whatever reason.

1467 25 AUG, 2110 UTC, IRAN, IRIB with national program. Fair signals.

1503 25 AUG, 2107 UTC, IRAN, IRIB with national program of traditional
music. Fair signal only with no QRM.

1512 25 AUG, 2103 UTC, IRAN, IRIB Regional carrying national program with
Iranian traditional music and soft talk. No sign of Saudi's BSKSA Quran
program supposed to be here with 1000kW from 1300-0300.

1539 25 AUG, 2052 UTC, UAE (US), Radio Aap Ki Dunya, with roundtable
discussion in Urdu. Must have been a political talk because one of the
participants was shouting angrily, and I could almost imagine him foaming at
the mouth. Good signals with some moderate fading. Germany's 700kW
Evangeliums-Rundfunk heard occasionally underneath, but very weak.

1548/1548.5 25 AUG, 2048 UTC, KUWAIT (US), Radio Sawa duking it out with
Iran who insists on being 500Hz higher in frequency, causing a massive
heterodyne on the channel. Both running bland talk.

1575 25 AUG, 2037 UTC, UAE (US), Radio Farda, regional 800kW powerhouse
running ME pop music and occasional DJ patter. Good signals with occasional
deep fades.

1584 25 AUG, 2032 UTC, IRAN, IRIB Maku, running national program with male
and female announcers, // with just about every other outlet on the
mediumwave band. Very strong signals with minimal QRM for ony 10kW.

12585 25 AUG, 1240 UTC, GUAM (US) US Coast Guard Station NRV with SITOR/CW
marker and fair signals, no interference.

Sleep was elusive last night, so I decided to do a mediumwave bandscan. I
will try to do one starting from 531 this evening as Friday is the day off
around these parts.

Re: [HCDX] Logs 5-4

2010-04-06 Thread Wolfgang Bueschel

Suggest is an Intermodulation at M&B Wertachtal site,
7290 and 7425 kHz both 500 kW at 180 degrees to Africa.

Only two station FRENCH programs end at 2200 UT,
7205 kHz RFI Issoudun, and 7290 YFR Wertachtal.

Another outlet from Wertachtal also at 2100-2200 UT on 7425 kHz.

So I guess two intermodulations occur in 41 mb, like on 7155 and 7560 kHz,
both 135 kHz away.

Formula:
7425 x 2 = 14850 minus 7290 kHz = 7560
7290 x 2 = 14580 minus 7425 kHz = 7155

Some of us care where signals actually come from (out of SW transmitting
antennas in a certain country). Really. This directly affects how well you will
hear them or hear them at all. Observing how propagation works is part of the

all days, 0946. If it's the fifth harmonic, originated of 1010 kHz, this
frequency (1010) is signing on in the same time, of course. But that's very
strange because this station certainly runs 24 hours a day (I don't checked it
but if it's not this time, 0947 is not usual to a station sign on in Brazil).
Checked the potential fourth harmonic 4040 and was nothing there around 0946. I
made a mistake in my log about 5050, that's not R. Cidade but R. Solar. What do
you think? 73 (Lúcio Otávio Bobrowiec, SP, May 9, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Harmonix tend to be either odd or even, so you might not hear 4040, but 3030,
if propagation were working on the lower frequency too. Maybe it really signs
on at that odd time for some reason, or maybe you have some other station
entirely; are you sure of the Radio Solar ID now on 5050? (Glenn Hauser, ibid.)

Re: [HCDX] Logs from NH-USA, week ending Feb 28th. - 4980

2009-02-28 Thread Glenn Hauser

This is a good time to look for temporary Chinese SW stations, possibly
pertinent here: 73, Glenn Hauser

** CHINA. CHINA AND THE EXTRA SHORTWAVE FREQUENCIES

I just heard you mention about CRI News Radio and Jiangsu People’s Radio from
0100 to 1600 UT. You will find many more popping up over the next few days, and
stay around up to two months, maybe a bit more, but all depends. The reason for
this is simple. If you go back to last year and the year before that, you will
find lots of shortwave activity around this time of year. The reason? The
National People’s Congress and the People’s Consultative Congress which happens
every March. This years round of meeting are set to begin March 5.

Every year it’s the same. The funniest one I remember was in 2005. Beijing
Traffic Radio all of a sudden appeared on SW using five frequencies. Question:
Why would you put a local (very local) traffic radio station on SW? [and
already reported again this year --- gh]

We have all heard of Firedrake, which uses a number of sites around China.
China does not use jamming [only] to block international broadcasters, but also
put local or regional stations on SW.

Turning on a SW radio in cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou,
Dalian and others is like listening to stations on top of each other. The best
of times, it’s hard to listen to the Chinese services of, let’s say, BBC, VOA
and others, but during Congress month it is downright impossible.

Something funny happened last May for a week in Shanghai during the Communist
Party’s regional meeting: a "very local station" called in English Children’s
Radio popped up on 12 frequencies. Two days after the meetings ended, so did
the SW. If you lived in China as long as I did, the Ministry Of Propaganda
tricks become very predictable (Keith Perron, Taiwan, Feb 28, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)

Re: [HCDX] LOGs and images

2009-02-03 Thread Jorge Freitas (Yahoo)

Olá Glenn e Colegas.

Descobri o motivo das imagens em meu degen. No domingo eu estava tentando
identificar algumas emissoras em OT que estavam chegando com sinal baixo e
muito ruído, tentei diversos baluns e outros procedimentos e os ruídos
continuavam. Aí inverti as pontas do balum 9:1 e os ruídos diminuíram,
Bem, resolvido o

5005 UNID. (NEPAL?) - dead carrier at 0110 on 14 Jan. No audio, but
signal at same signal level and fading rate as the AIR stations, which
lends

theory to Nepal. Anyone heard this lack of audio from Nepal on this freq?
I haven't seen them reported in a bit. They are the only folks scheduled
to

be on at this time. Overall good signals.

1107 AFGHANISTAN, RTVA, seems to have cleaned up its act. Monitoring
last night indicates that its modulation problems have been fixed and it's
now well within its allotted occupied bandwidth of 9kHz, and the spectral
display no longer looks like mush. The harmonics are also gone except for
a

slightly detectable 3rd harmonic which can just barely be seen. Gone too
are the spurs. I hope someone else had a chance to log this. It started
snowing and raining yesterday morning and continues. While this may be
responsible for damping arcs between its antennas, I truly believe that
the
issue was tuning. We'll see what happens when drier weather returns.
It's

a rather curious coincidence that this got fixed after a write-up in Glenn
Hauser's DXLD. Perhaps someone in charge at RTVA is a reader or had the
info forwarded to them.

No time for DX last night as I took delivery of my completely overhauled
genset and had to oversee its installation and wiring. I did some brief
scanning and everything seems quiet, however a newly commissioned city
power

transformer a couple of blocks away (only for the politically higher-ups
though) is causing some hash on MW and LW. Perhaps I can persuade one of
these Taliban types to rocket the thing so I have some quiet on those
frequency ranges...

Hi Al,

Israel stayed on SW with Persian only. This is scheduled on 9985.
V of Korea in Arabic at same time is scheduled on 9990, so it looks like your
frequencies are 5 kHz off here. Could that be? 73, Glenn Hauser

Re: [HCDX] Logs for Al Muick 04 November

2008-11-05 Thread Albert Muick
Thanks, Wolfgang and Mauno.

This is becoming a matter of principle for me. I WILL hear this station
before I leave Kabul. I guess the best time to try would be just before
sunset and just at daybreak, and hope for some greyline propagation.

If they are directional to the southwest at night, it's probably to protect
the contours of Syria and Turkey which are co-channel. But this possible
nighttime pattern puts them in conflict with Kenya on the same frequency.

I think I might just write them an email asking for information.

out of the dirt with the MW-550P. Station power is 75kW.

1332 IRAN, Teheran City R., heard at 17.50 GMT on 04 Nov with OM

6000 GERMANY, Polish R. Warsaw via Nauen, heard at 16.00 on 04 Nov. with
Ukrainian program and very good signal strength, apparently off the side
of

the beam. As might be expected, a lot of the program was about the US
elections.

6348 CLAN, R.Echo of Hope, heard at 15.22 on 04 Nov. in KR with YL in

Really happy with the Moldova catch as well as Echo of Hope. I'm trying

The station with Latin-American music could well be XEWA-540 Mexico.

Eike,

Welcome to the USA!

RN on 540 was surely CBC Overnight service, which relays various foreign
stations courtesy of WRN, in a specially-formulated lineup, not the same as the
WRN streams elsewhere. Furthermore all these are timezone-delayed, in this case
being UT -6 for CST. CBC does not close down, they just go into WRN CBC
Overnight; the 540 station is indeed CBK in Saskatchewan, no doubt a regular in
your location. Somewhere on the CBC website is a listing of the stations
carried Overnight, in local time. 73, Glenn Hauser, OK

  Chuck,

Is your clock set wrong? This was posted at
9:36 PM EDT, 0136 GMT. What first caught my
attention was the VOA Iranawila broadcast, which I
knew to be at 0030-0100 for the last couple of
weeks.

Russia, 7125, RadioKompaniya, Moldova, 0115-
0140, Steady Russian language
comments and
features with males and a female doing the
talking. Except for the
language, this format sounds like
talk radio News stations here in the states
several years ago - interesting
listening. Identification
break at 0132 which was a canned announcement,
very brief, then back to
talk. At 0133 music
presented. Signal was good. (Chuck Bolland,
June 22, 2008)

Sri Lanka, 7135 Voice of America, 0135-0200,
Noted a female in steady
comments. EIBI
database lists "UR" as the language, which I
am assuming represents "Urdu",
for this freq and
time. At approximately 0157 heard plenty of
ID's in that language as "VOA"
and "Voice
of America". I took the Sri Lanka connection
from the Passport page 435.
Signal for this
broadcast was fair. (Chuck Bolland, June 22,
2008)

Russia, 7200, Voice or Russia, 0210-0235
Noted this station in Spanish
Language
comments provided by a male and female.
Checked a number of parallel freqs
and
heard only the following: 7300 and 9830 KHz.
Checked a number of sources
both hard
and electronic copies, to confirm this as
Voice of Russia as well as the
schedule, and found
a mishmash of different schedules and
frequecies which all added up to
nothing but
doubt and confusion. During a recorded
interview, heard an individual
mention Cuba
and Russo during his comments, so it was
probably someone in Cuba stating
the
friendship that exsisted between Cuba and
Russo. At 0234, live ID as "Voz
de Russo".
Signal was fair on 7200 while 7300 and 9830
KHz were good. (Chuck Bolland,

Re: [HCDX] logs on ICF SW40

2007-10-13 Thread Glenn Hauser
Beware of going by the frequency readout on this receiver (and many others of
its type). It has no BFO, or SSB capability, so you can`t be sure where the
carrier is. The readout goes in 1-kHz steps, according to reviews I have read.
Djibouti is always reported on 4780, and VOA Botswana is surely on 4930.0, not
4929 unless something is very wrong there. Universitaria Bolivia is reported by
everyone else close to 4732, not 4734 as Lucio had it (and news of its
reactivation was welcome!). It`s easy to be misled by reading the dial where
the station `sounds best`, especially if you are tuning a bit to one side to
avoid interference. What needs to be reported is the true carrier frequency of
stations, not necessarily what the readout says. A poor substitute for a BFO
would be, if adjacent interference allows, to tune up and down to decide where
the `middle` of the signal is. 73, Glenn Hauser

This was indeed Radio Nikkei. I caught them playing a
solid block of western classical music from 1130 to
past 1200 a few days ago on 3925/6055/9595 - they seem
to be pretty lax about IDing at the top and bottom of
the hour sometimes. Surprisingly, at that hour the
strongest signal here was on 3925.

Re: [HCDX] Logs&QSL SW

2005-07-30 Thread Noel R Green
Re the "Indian Songs" station heard on 11665 - this is actually Radio Solh
to Afghanistan via a transmitter in the UAE. Check page 4 of the latest WRTH
Summer update and you'll find that it replaces former 11810 at 0500-0900.
It's been heard on this new frequency for about two months, but usually not
very strongly at my location.

RFI is via ASC and in English for the first half hour.

Hej Zacharias,

you do not state time for your 11605 Clandestine reception, but ISRAEL is
scheduled to be on that frequency in Persian from 1400, and could very well be
them being jammed by Iran.

I also heard that station this morning with excellent signal (SINPO 45434). I
posted an audio clip of the ID, like mentioned above, on my website.

Re: [HCDX] logs nocturnes

2005-04-03 Thread michel lacroix
hi walter
all transmitting power noted in last passport's edition.

belarus has many transmitters using even mil facilities.

old & new information...
never said that rebelde was a scoop for me.
it was only a log with poor propagation conditions here.
sharing our experiences seems to me the aim of this kind of list.

This is old information, Michel. They are using 50 kw via a new
transmitter, if memory serves me correctly.

>05970 bielorusse ID 250k 0217 544 all courrier des auditeurs 03avr05

250 kW??? Really? I never thought that Belarus had any transmitter that
high, and 250 kw was never a Soviet power...remember the days of 120 and
240 kw? Also Belarus uses a bunch of old jamming transmitters at 5 or 10
kW only. Please double check that source.
