Kevin, I replied to you off list.
My hunch was correct, modifying a different Linux user's .bashrc and
.bash-profile to remove references to VistA and set up separate
directories for GT.M routines and globals worked. With PuTTY, I managed to:

Mike,
Good. At first, when I first read your message, I thought you were
having trouble getting ^XUP to work, and I was going to try to ensure
that you had your directories set up properly etc. But I see that you
are wanting to avoid messing up your VistA. So good, you have
achieved that.
But
We need to edit the transport file because we need
to change the namespace and file numbers. We did it on the file, not the
global. I hope that works.

Kevin,
My approach has been about the same, except that I'm already on my third
install, and I sure did trash the first two to the point of
unusability. Since Hui OpenVista is so much easier to install (Thanks
Branden!), I'm not too concerned about having to replace it, but I would
like to

Mike,
I think your import plans are definitely do-able, and not such a big
pipe dream. Would you like me to send you my code so you can see how
I did it? I think you would find my code more readable than the
traditional fileman format. I tend to layout my code such that it
looks like c code.
ASTM is also at it and I believe HL7 and ASTM are going to try to come up with
some common solution, much as they are doing with the CCR and CDA.

I made the changes Nancy suggested, still no luck. When I telnet in (I
like using E-term over putty)to the windows server running cache 5.2.0
all I get is a c prompt(c:\). Do I have to change to a directory like in
unix(vista#GTM), or do I have to specify a different port other than 23
for cache?
Do you have a licensed copy of Cache or a single user version? I do not
believe you can telnet in to a single user version.

Jamie,
My guess is that you're connecting to the Windows telnet server, not
Cache's telnet server. Go to Windows' admin tools | services and stop the
telnet service (you should also set it to manual or even disabled for
security reasons). Once you do that restart Cache so it can bind to port
Nancy, you're an angel as always. I went to ASTM's website and found these
great Standards:
E1384-02a Practice for Content and Structure of the Electronic Health Record
E2436-05 Standard Specification for the Representation of Human
Characteristics Data in Healthcare Information Systems
No you can't telnet into the single user version.

You sure? I do it on all of my Windows Cache installs and they're all the
free downloaded ones.

You can telnet into Cache on the single user licensed version but only from
the same PC Cache is running on.
