Preface by Serge Klarsfeld. Articles are "On Reading Photographic 
Images," Anne Grynberg and "From Shtetl to Kolkhoz: The Tradesmen and 
Farmers of Yiddishland (1921-1938)," Emmanuelle Polack. Featuring 
photos reproduced from original glass plates in the Paris archive of 
ORT. The images were taken to serve the fund-raising purposes of ORT 
in the west and the propaganda purposes of the Soviet and Romanian 
governments. Nevertheless, they are a rare source of images of rural 
Jewish life in those places and that time.
