Subject: NACO and RDA Authority Records for Hebraica contributors to the LCNAF
- Funnel and non-Funnel contributors

Dear Hebraica NACO Funnel members/contributors and institutional Hebraica NACO
contributors,

It was recently announced that PCC Day One for RDA Authority Records will be
March 31, 2013 .   What that means is that after PCC Day One

·                      Access points used in all new RDA and AACR2
bibliographic records with authentication code “pcc” must be supported by RDA
authority records.

·                      PCC   catalogers contributing RDA or AACR2 bibliographic
records with authentication code “pcc” must evaluate and re-code as RDA any
AACR2 authority record that had been flagged as not usable as an RDA heading,
but which is needed as an access point in the “pcc” authenticated bibliographic
record.   These records include a 667 field beginning “This heading cannot be
used under RDA until …”

Until March 31, 2013 PCC catalogers will continue to follow the PCC Post RDA
Test Guidelines  ( http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/PCC-Post-RDA-Test.html ).

To prepare NACO catalogers for the transition to RDA, the PCC Secretariat has
developed a series of modules to serve as RDA NACO authority training for
current AACR2 NACO authority catalogers. T he training modules will be
available beginning in April 2012 . The training is totally online. It is
designed for existing NACO Program members who are making the transition from
AACR2 to RDA: Resource Description & Access for NACO contributions. It is
assumed that participants are comfortable with creating and updating NACO
authority records in the MARC 21 Authority Format, and are aware of NACO
documentation and contribution parameters.

The training is general in nature, and highlights the differences between AACR2
NACO headings and references, and RDA NACO authorized access points and variant
access points. There is a concentration on recording attributes in the
authority record using the new RDA-inspired MARC 21 fields.

The training should take approximately 10-12 hours to complete (this is a rough
estimate) and it is recommended that the training be taken within a
one-to-two-week period, with a preference for the one-week period, for the sake
of continuity.

PCC has specified that a period of mandatory review will follow the completion
of the training.

*****The training is not designed for new NACO Program members with no previous
authority experience. A period of mandatory review will follow the completion
of the training.

This training will not cover RDA/NACO authority work for more specialized types
of resources such as Hebraica, CJK, law, religion … [et al.].   Joan and I will
work together to provide additional training for creating Hebraica headings
with their unique and particular issues and practices.

Joan and I will assume responsibility for review of  all newly created and
updated RDA Hebraica headings for both Hebraica NACO Funnel and non-Funnel
members.

We are still in the planning stages but will keep you updated as more
information on workflows, etc. becomes available.

Thank you,
Heidi G. Lerner
