Shalom,

When I saw this discussion hit HaSafran, I forwarded the discussion to my
cousin, Andrew Gottlieb, Ph.D.,Curator, Hollander Collection
www.hollanderjudaica.com
Below is his response:

*"I believe that language should be used to communicate effectively, and I
can tell you, at least anecdotally, that "Marrano" is understand
immediately and used regularly among the Jews of South Florida and within
Jewish communities of the Latin American countries where I have completed
reasearch. *

*"Crypto-Jew" is NOT the same as "Marrano" and I will sit shiva for any Jew
who makes up a ridiculous term to replace it, such as "EID, Exiled
Inquisition Jew." I know that the term means "pig," but "Yankee" was no
moniker of which to be proud either, until the colonists embraced it.*

*Meantime, my personal short answer to your question is that most Hispnic
Jews remain unoffended; the term is immediately understood, and I don't
believe that the term warrants a linguistic war, a la the "n" word."*

I hope this brings some clarification to this issue.

Jackie
