1) Hugo Mandelbaum, Jewish Life in the Village Communities of Southern Germany

content about traditional Jewish life.
2) Abraham Carmel, So Strange My Life, is the autobiographical account of an

Thank you too everyone for the excellent suggestions! I'll have to make a

Another three oldies but goodies (I may have missed these in the
suggestions of other Safranim). These are books I read when I decided to
return to Judaism after having my first child, while living in a small town
where we were the only Jewish family. They taught me a lot:
1. To Life! by Rabbi
The two that come to mind are This is My G-d by Herman WoukandTurbulent Souls
by Stephen J. Dubner
I loved them both

Aviva –
Since you said a narrative is preferred this list of books might be engaging.
Even though they are personal narratives of converts to Judaism,
all are fascinating stories of journeys to Judaism and learning about its laws
and traditions.
I read them all and enjoyed each one.

I think the Sarah Hurwitz book would be a great choice. I've passed it on
to several people and always gotten good feedback.
