In recent weeks we’ve had some spirited discussion about graphic novels, and I had asked for recommendations. One title that came pretty well recommended (and so I bought it) was “PICTURE STORIES FROM THE BIBLE, The Old Testament in full-color comic-strip form,” edited by M.C. Gaines. I am writing today to provide my – and my Education Director’s – strong reactions.
I think this one is pretty terrible. The drawings as well as the writing are outdated; it’s essentially an unaltered reproduction of the original 1943 publication. I don’t want to spend time listing what I see as inappropriate or obsolete, but I do want to caution against ordering this book without first taking a good look at it online. (In the meantime, I’m ditching my brand new copy, so, is anyone interested? I’ll happily give it to you -- all I ask is the cost of shipping.)
