Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the AJL Awards Committee, I am pleased to announce that Joy
Kingsolver is the 2015 winner of the Fanny Goldstein Merit Award. A
justification for Joy’s award is presented below. Please join the Committee in
congratulating Joy!

All my best,

Aaron T.

Justification for the Nomination of Joy Kingsolver as the 2015 Fanny Goldstein
Merit Award Recipient

The Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) Awards Committee is delighted to
award the Fannie Goldstein Merit Award to Joy Kingsolver, the Association’s
longtime archivist and parliamentarian. As archivist, Joy has carefully
assembled and organized the crucial documents of the Association’s history,
including minutes of meetings, photographs, conference papers, and ensured
their safekeeping for posterity. As parliamentarian at numerous AJL meetings,
she has displayed her expertise in the rules of order and guided participants
on proper procedures to ensure that the appropriate rules are followed fairly
and that multiple voices are heard. Joy has also played a similar role in the
many Board and Council debates and votes that have taken place via e-mail.

Words like “ensure” and “make sure” are crucial in understanding the importance
of Joy’s contributions. All too often, those who work to allow others to shine
are overlooked. Joy has performed her challenging roles with her characteristic
understatement, modesty, professionalism, and grace. In this the year of AJL’s
Jubilee conference, the AJL Awards Committee feels that it is especially
fitting to honor a member whose work helps us better understand our own history
as Hebraica and Judaica archivists and librarians, keepers of the Jewish book
and of Jewish papers, and helps provide access to that history for future
generations of librarians and scholars. The world of AJL and our profession
more broadly will be better understood thanks in no small measure to the
tireless efforts of Joy Kingsolver.

Joy, we thank you for your work and we honor your achievements!

Respectfully submitted,

The AJL Awards Committee

[ha-Safran] Poet needed

2015-02-09 Thread Etta Gold
Greetings, Safaranim ~
Does anyone know of any poets that are especially popular with young kids and
might consider visiting our Beth Am Day School? The Day School has begun a
marvelous new program of a School-wide Enrichment Day. Since April is Poetry
Month, the organizer of this event would like to bring in a poet - preferably
someone who's got a good sense of humor. This program will take place the end
of April and there is a limited budget for covering the expense.
So, if you know of someone who will bring the gift of poetry to help our
students celebrate, if you have had the experience of bringing a poet to your
school, please let us know.
Thank you so much,
Etta and Danielle

[ha-Safran] Hebrew Cataloging RDA now available online

2015-02-09 Thread Heidi G Lerner
I would like to announce that Hebraica Cataloging RDA: a Guide to ALA/LC
Romanization and Descriptive Cataloging is now available. This online resource
supplements and updates Hebraica Cataloging (Paul Maher) that appeared in 1987.
This new resource aims to serve as a published guide to the romanization and
descriptive cataloging of Hebraica materials in RDA by the Library of Congress
and the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC).

This resource was created by Joan Biella (formerly of LC), Benjamin Fryser
(LC), and Heidi Lerner (Stanford Libraries) and is available at the AJL RAS
Cataloging Committee Wiki:

http://rascat.pbworks.com/w/page/7836007/FrontPage

This resource has been several years in the making and incorporates many
comments made on the first draft. A second part containing annotated examples
taken from a summer 2013 workshop-style e-forum for Hebraica cataloguers
(developed to as a platform for discussing issues in RDA cataloging particular
to Hebrew and Yiddish materials) will follow in th spring or summer of 2015.

Thank you, Heidi Lerner
