From the introduction: “The synagogues of Turkey, which had not gone
through any significant changes over the past years, underwent countless
restorations, modifications, reconstructions and diverse usages during the
last decade. All these changes took place in a relatively short time due to
the rising awareness of the historical heritage of Turkey by the directors
of the Turkish Jewish Community, the Municipalities and the General
Directorate of Foundations. As a result of the above, it was essential to
publish a second “extended” edition of this book which was first published
in 2008. We decided to include the following synagogues to the second
edition: the historical İzmir Synagogues that are being restored for the
last two years; the Shaar Ashamayim Synagogue in Alsancak, İzmir which was
reconstructed a short while ago; the Bergama Yabets Synagogue, which was
restored by the Municipality, the Gaziantep Synagogue, which was opened for
prayers in December 2019 after its restoration was completed in 2012; the
Kilis Synagogue, whose restoration was completed in December 2019 by the
General Directorate of Foundations, the Grand Synagogue of Edirne, which is
one of three largest synagogues in Europe was restored by the General
Directorate of Foundations; the Abudara (Parmakkapı) Synagogue, which was
not in the first edition and which is planned to be leased to a private
museum; and the Esgher Synagogue, which is undergoing reconstruction to be
converted to a Cultural Center (Library) by the Beyoğlu Municipality in
Istanbul.”
