Thanks for the suggestion, unfortunately, most of the data in the file is,
apparently, "Vdata with column storage order", which h4mapwriter can't
handle :-(
I think, with all of the suggestions that I've gotten, I've got enough now
to figure it all out and should hopefully have my problem

You may also want to try "h4mapwriter" tool.
Please take a look at sample XML outputs from the HDF4 files and see
the map writer fits your purpose:
