In [^SCM_Cache_Perf_Results-v1.pdf], DFSIO 1TB sequential read performance
(HDD) is 4.74MB/sec and I think the result is very slow. Normally HDD
sequential read performance is about 80MB~100MB/sec and the result of TestDFSIO
should be similar. Am I missing something?

Feilong He commented on HDFS-13762:
---

As the subtask section shows, we divided this Jira into several subtasks, among
which HDFS-14355 and HDFS-14356 are respectively for pure java impl and PMDK
based impl. In the past weeks, we focused on pure java impl and got the patch
merged into upstream. In the following weeks, we will mainly focus on the PMDK
based impl. Most of recent comments posted by reviewers in this Jira are
relevent to PMDK based impl. I am replying to these comments. Sorry for the
late reply.

[~umamaheswararao]'s comments:
{quote}I think interface design can be cleaner. Now we have interfaces for
MappableBlock but we really will not depend much on interface, we actually
directly use class to load block as they are staic methods.I am thinking
something like this: Lets have MemoryVolumeManager interface which will be
implemented by two separate impelemnattions: PMemVolumeManager and
MemMappedVolumeManagerThey can have init methods and getMappableBlockLoaderThey
can return respective MappableBlockLoader classes, they are PMemMappedBlock or
MemoryMappedBlock..
{quote}
Yes, it is better to use interface design. We have refactored this impl by
HDFS-14354.
{quote}"Fail to msync region. --> Failed to msync region
{quote}
I will fix this expression issue in our new patch.
{quote}// Load Intel ISA-L : you may want to removed this in pmdk file. I saw
in couple of other places referring to ISA-L. Please remove them as its not
related to that.
{quote}
I will check again to remove irrelevant comments.
{quote}If some DNs configured with pmem volumes and some not, then blocks will
be cached in both mmapped and pmemmapped? Probably you would like to document
your recommendation?
{quote}
For a datanode, the block can be cached either to memory or to pmem. It is
acceptable that some DNs are configured with pmem volumes and some are not.
This will be well documented.
{quote}You may want to update the documentation for this feature
[https://hadoop.apache.org/docs/current/hadoop-project-dist/hadoop-hdfs/CentralizedCacheManagement.html]
{quote}
Yes, we opened a subtask HDFS-14357 to do document work.
{quote}Since its persistet, how does this handle or remember cached blocks when
DN restart?
{quote}
Actually, for this Jira, the persistent characteristic of pmem is not
considered. The cached block will not be kept when DN restarts. So the pmem
cache acts like DRAM cache. We will consider to support persistent cache in the
future.
{quote}Do you want to have different metrics for different cache types? I am
not sure its really necessary, but people may be interested to know how many
blocks cached in pmem area? (Low priority)
{quote}
We opened a subtask HDFS-14458 for collecting the pmem cache metrics and
reporting to namenode. The cache metrics are similar to DRAM cache's. Please
watch this subtask to get the update in the near future.
{quote}You need to fix for Windows as well. Am I missing something?
{quote}
Currenly, for PMDK based impl, we only support linux env.
{quote}From pmdk_load.h Quick question does this types available if non-unix
env? I think you did tydef in Unix env only right
{quote}
 These types are not supported in non-unix env. As the above comment indicates,
the PMDK based impl are only supported in linux env.

[~Sammi]'s comments:
{quote}NativeIO.java,  suggest to define the different PMDK support code and
it's meaning using a enum, so it will be easy to map the code to description.
{quote}
Good suggestion! It would be better to maintain the PMDK support codes and the
corresponding message in enum. I will refine this part of impl in our new patch.
{quote}NativeIO.c, it would be nice to refactor the error message, to avoid the
potential array overflow if pmem_errormsg() returns too long content. There are
several piece of similar code
{quote}
 Not exactly, snprintf method will truncate excessive characters. So there
should be no array overflow issue. I will check our code to avoid such
potential issue.
{quote}Support persistent memeory cache on Windows can be a follow-up task
since Windows is not very common used in user environment. For build patch on
Windows, if it's a goal of this JIRA, please update the "Building on Windows"
in BUILDING.txt for any specific steps user need to take. If it's not a goal of
this JIRA, make sure build on Windows will have clear message for this case.
{quote}
Thanks for your clarification. Yes, the windows platform is not considered by
this Jira. I will make sure clear message is presented to user when building on
windows.
{quote}Cmakelists.txt "#Require ISA-L" is for ISA-L, better keep it.
{quote}
 OK. I will check the new comments one by one and irrelevant ones to code will
be removed.
{quote}make PmemVolumeManager

A new doc SCM_Cache_Perf_Results-2019-3-28.pdf was just uploaded. This doc
shows our performance test results on DFSIO and TPCDS workloads. SCM cache has
been compared with no cache (HDD storage) and DRAM cache. From the doc, you can
see SCM cache shows visible performance advantages in many cases. If you need
more detailed test results, please feel free to let me know.

I just uploaded SCMCacheDesign-2019-03-26.pdf. This design doc was updated to
align with our current implementation. We also added some future plans on HDFS
SCM cache. Please refer to this doc for more easily understanding our
implementation.

In addition, currently we are working on this jira's subtask HDFS-14355. You
can go there to review our patch. Suggestions are always welcome. Thanks!

Thanks everyone for your valuable comments on this work. After discussed with
[~umamaheswararao] & [~rakeshr], we decide to split this JIRA into 4 subtasks
as the above subtask section shows. A big change to this work is that we will
add an implementation of SCM cache by using mapped byte buffer, which will not
depend on PMDK. And the previous implementation with PMDK is still kept. Using
which implementation is configurable. Currently, the code is under refining. I
will upload the patches in these days.

[~PhiloHe],

Referring to my comment 1 above: I would suggest to file separate sub Jira for
Interfacing part alone considering existing implementation.
Then we can add pmdk implementation or any others in plug-able mode.  This will
help reviewers to be more focused and you could add more test cases.

Thanks [~PhiloHe] for continue working on this.  Here are some feebacks for
008.patch.
 1. NativeIO.java,  suggest to define the different PMDK support code and it's
meaning using a enum, so it will be easy to map the code to description.
 2. NativeIO.c, it would be nice to refactor the error message, to avoid the
potential array overflow if pmem_errormsg() returns too long content. There are
several piece of similar code

{code:java}
char msg[1000];
   snprintf(msg, sizeof(msg), "Fail to unmap region. address: %x, length: %x,
error msg: %s", address, length, pmem_errormsg());
{code}

3. Support persistent memeory cache on Windows can be a follow-up task since
Windows is not very common used in user environment. For build patch on
Windows, if it's a goal of this JIRA, please update the "Building on Windows"
in BUILDING.txt for any specific steps user need to take. If it's not a goal of
this JIRA, make sure build on Windows will have clear message for this case.
4. Cmakelists.txt  "#Require ISA-L" is for ISA-L, better keep it.
5. make PmemVolumeManager pmemManager final

6.
 This piece of code has the chance to delete user files accidentally. Better to
provide user a choice to decide auto delete or not.
{code:java}
   // Remove all files under the volume. Files may been left after a
  // unexpected data node restart.
  FileUtils.cleanDirectory(locFile);
{code}

7. make count in PmemVolumeManager final
8. fillBuffer in MemoryMappedBlock and PmemMappedBlock are the same. refactor
to keep only one piece of code

[jira] [Commented] (HDFS-13762) Support non-volatile storage class memory(SCM) in HDFS cache directives

2019-02-20 Thread Uma Maheswara Rao G (JIRA)

[

Uma Maheswara Rao G commented on HDFS-13762:

Thanks [~PhiloHe] for updating the patch. Please find the following feedback.
I am still reviewing it and will post remaining comments tomorrow.

#  {code:java}
   this.pmemManager = new PmemVolumeManager();
  this.pmemManager.load(pmemVolumes);
  PmemMappedBlock.setPersistentMemoryManager(this.pmemManager);
  PmemMappedBlock.setDataset(dataset);
{code}
  I think interface design can be cleaner. Now we have interfaces for
MappableBlock but we really will not depend much on interface, we actually
directly use class to load block as they are staic methods.
 I am thinking something like this: Lets have MemoryVolumeManager interface
which will be implemented by two separate impelemnattions: PMemVolumeManager
and MemMappedVolumeManager
 They can have init methods and getMappableBlockLoader
 They can return respective MappableBlockLoader classes, they are
PMemMappedBlock or MemoryMappedBlock
 Then this loader will have interfaces of loadBlock, getLength, and
afterCache. Lets make current static load methods can be provate static methods
in PMemMappedBlock and MemoryMappedBlock and use them in loadBlock interface
implemenattion.
 Does this make sense to you?
This will avoid the if check every time at
{code:java}
if (pmemManager == null) {
mappableBlock = MemoryMappedBlock.load(length, blockIn, metaIn,
blockFileName, key);
  } else {
mappableBlock = PmemMappedBlock.load(length, blockIn, metaIn,
blockFileName, key);
  }
{code}
 MemoryVolumeManager#getMappableBlockLoader will get right loader and load the
block.
# "Fail to msync region. --> Failed to msync region
# // Load Intel ISA-L : you may want to removed this in pmdk file. I saw in
couple of other places referring to ISA-L. Please remove them as its not
related to that.
# If some DNs configured with pmem volumes and some not, then blocks will be
cached in both mmapped and pmemmapped? Probably you would like to document your
recommendation?
# You may want to update the documentation for this feature
https://hadoop.apache.org/docs/current/hadoop-project-dist/hadoop-hdfs/CentralizedCacheManagement.html
# Since its persistet, how does this handle or remember cached blocks when DN
restart?
# Do you want to have different metrics for different cache types? I am not
sure its really necessary, but people may be interested to know how many blocks
cached in pmem area? (Low priority)

[jira] [Commented] (HDFS-13762) Support non-volatile storage class memory(SCM) in HDFS cache directives

2019-02-06 Thread Wei-Chiu Chuang (JIRA)

[
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HDFS-13762?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel=16762058#comment-16762058
 ]

Wei-Chiu Chuang commented on HDFS-13762:

Thanks for the patch. I don't fully understand this hardware, but here's a few
general comments:

{code:java}
if (!NativeIO.isAvailable() || !NativeIO.POSIX.isPmemAvailable()) {
throw new IOException("Persistent memory storage configured, " +
"but not available (" + NativeIO.POSIX.PMDK_SUPPORT_STATE + ").");
}{code}
This error message is not particularly useful. It should be more explicit to
indicate where the problem is: does the native Hadoop libhadoop.so fail to
load? Does it fail to load the pmdk library? Or the hardware is not present?
Hint: see ErasureCodeNative.java for an example. A user won't be able to
understand the meaning of the magic number NativeIO.POSIX.PMDK_SUPPORT_STATE
unless she reads the code.

FsDatasetCache
{code:java}
String[] pmemVolumes = dataset.datanode.getDnConf().getPmemVolumes();
if (pmemVolumes != null && pmemVolumes.length != 0) {
  if (!NativeIO.isAvailable() || !NativeIO.POSIX.isPmemAvailable()) {
throw new IOException("Persistent memory storage configured, " +
"but not available (" + NativeIO.POSIX.PMDK_SUPPORT_STATE + ").");
  }
  this.pmemManager = new PmemVolumeManager();
  this.pmemManager.load(pmemVolumes);
  PmemMappedBlock.setPersistentMemoryManager(this.pmemManager);
  PmemMappedBlock.setDataset(dataset);
}
 {code}
Can we refactor this segment of code into its own method? This segment is
self-contained and frankly most of users won't have PMEM hardware so they won't
care.

In TestNativeIO.java:
{code:java}
if (!NativeIO.POSIX.isPmemAvailable()) {{code}
Use Assume.assumeTrue(NativeIO.POSIX.isPmemAvailable()) instead
{code:java}
  private static void deletePmemMappedFile(String filePath) {
try {
  if (filePath != null) {
boolean result = Files.deleteIfExists(Paths.get(filePath));
if (!result) {
  LOG.error("Fail to delete mapped file " + filePath +
  " from persistent memory");
}
  }
} catch (Throwable e) {
  LOG.error("Fail to delete mapped file " + filePath + " for " +
  e.getMessage() + " from persistent memory");
}
  }
{code}
 If it throws a Throwable, shouldn't it just throw it and let it fail? I don't
think it's a good idea to catch it.

If there's an exception that you think should be logged at ERROR or WARN level,
it's probably a better idea to log its stack trace as well. So instead of
{code:java}
LOG.error("Fail to delete mapped file " + filePath + " for " +
e.getMessage() + " from persistent memory");{code}
do
{code:java}
LOG.error("Fail to delete mapped file " + filePath  + " from persistent
memory", e);{code}

Thanks [~PhiloHe] for the continuous efforts!

{quote}Yes, it's a limitation for all the volumes together.
{quote}
OK, it would be concern when there are different sizes volumes. Agreed to take
up in a follow up jira task.
{quote}We maintains the map from block file to cache-file on pmem storage, so
no need to search for it among the volumes
{quote}
Great!
{quote}We don't have a evict logic here or throw a VolumeFullException, it just
works like the memory-cache for compatible now.
{quote}
Please add this case to the system test plan. It would be good to test it and
document/know the behavior.
{quote}(iii), we will update the patch accordingly
{quote}
Please change below one also.
{code:java}
+  Pmem.unmapBlock(region.getAddress(), region.getLength());
+  boolean deled = false;
{code}

Adding few more comments, please take care:
 # MappableBlock interface looks good, please add javadocs for the below
functions. Also, please reflect specific class MappableBlock, PmemMappedBlock,
MemoryMappedBlock responsibility in javadoc instead of using the same
"Represents an HDFS block that is mmapped by the DataNode."
{code:java}
  long getLength();

  void afterCache();
{code}

 # Change the comment to PMDK instead of ISA-L!
{code:java}
+  // Load Intel ISA-L
+  #ifdef UNIX
{code}

 # Could you please brief the difference between {{pmemDrain}} and
{{pmemSync}}. Also, I would appreciate if you could add javadoc so that the
functionality will be visible to the readers.
{code:java}
private static native boolean isPmemCheck(long address, long length);
private static native PmemMappedRegion pmemCreateMapFile(String path,
long length);
private static native boolean pmemUnMap(long address, long length);
private static native void pmemCopy(byte[] src, long dest, boolean isPmem,

private static native void pmemDrain();

Hi [~rakeshr], thank you very much for reviewing the patch and the great
comments!

??Is the MaxLockedMemory limit applicable to all the "pmemVolumes" together???
 Yes, it's a limitation for all the volumes together.

??will it maintain any indexing or just do random search??
 We maintains the map from block file to cache-file on pmem storage, so no need
to search for it among the volumes.

??Is there any automatic eviction logic available once volume reaches threshold
or will it throw VolumeFullException to the users??
 We don't have a evict logic here or throw a VolumeFullException, it just works
like the memory-cache for compatible now.

For (ii) and (iii), we will update the patch accordingly, thank you very much!

[~zhouwei], [~Sammi], Great proposal, thanks for your work.

[i) Few clarifications about multiple {{pmemVolumes}} configuration:
 # Is the MaxLockedMemory limit applicable to all the "pmemVolumes" together?
 # IIUC, you have mentioned about robin policy to choose a directory for each
new DNA_CACHE command. I'd like to understand about the look up, will it
maintain any indexing or just do random search and if it doesn't find the item
in a volume then search through next volume?
 # Is there any automatic eviction logic available once volume reaches
threshold or will it throw VolumeFullException to the users?

(ii) Please add "{{dfs.datanode.cache.pmem.dirs}}" to hdfs-default.xml config
doc file, that would make 'TestHdfsConfigFields' test happy.
 (iii) Typo:
 {{boolean deled = false; ==> boolean deleted = false;}}

> No-volatile storage class memory is a type of memory that can keep the data
> content after power failure or between the power cycle. Non-volatile storage
> class memory device usually has near access speed as memory DIMM while has
> lower cost than memory.  So today It is usually used as a supplement to
> memory to hold long tern persistent data, such as data in cache.
> Currently in HDFS, we have OS page cache backed read only cache and RAMDISK
> based lazy write cache.  Non-volatile memory suits for both these functions.
> This Jira aims to enable storage class memory first in read cache. Although
> storage class memory has non-volatile characteristics, to keep the same
> behavior as current read only cache, we don't use its persistent
> characteristics currently.

After discussed with [~Sammi] offline, I'll take over the responsibilities to
follow on this issue. Thanks [~Sammi] for the great design and initial patch! I
made some changes to trigger checks.
