It's unfortunate the configuration is listed in core-default.xml and named as fs.protected.directories. IMO We shouldn't allow deletion of any protected directory in any way. and I agree to restrict rename for protected directories, to prevent this hacky way of deleting the protected directories. But to my knowledge this would be an incompatible change too. Since this would be change in behavior of rename API. One other way that I can think of, is at the time of rename, maybe we forward the behavior preventing deletion so that the renamed dir also can't be deleted, but not sure what is the best way to do so.
