In the UK clinical lab I started in we used Miller's elastin, which I think
was a resourcinol formulation (digging from 20 years ago in my brain). I
tried to find that in the US but never did. I loved that stain, worked well
every time! We would counterstain with a van-Giesen, looked stunning! the
We love the Aldehyde Fuchsin with a fast-green counterstain. Once the initial
working stain is made up, it is a fast and easy stain to perform, not to
mention just pretty - purple fibers against a green background.

There are numerous alternatives discussed there. I particularly like the

Dear Mama,
there are several elastic stains which are as brilliant as Verhoeff.
For a very quick and easy stain you can try:
Van Gieson with Resorcinfuchsin or
Resorcinfuchsin with Thiazin-picric-acid
Also very interesting results can be generated with:
Aldehydfuchsin-Tripple Stain
and
Histonetters,
Is there someone who can recommend a Elastic stain other than Verhoeff?
Thanks

Hello Histoes,
I've got a Ventana BenchMark Special Stainer and the best I am getting so
far is purple.
Does anyone have a protocol they have worked out that makes the elastic
fibers black?
If you have a protocol will you share it with me please?
Thank you,

Hi Netters,
Has anyone out in Histoland achieved blackness with the BMSS Elastic stain?
All I'm getting are purple elastic fibers. If you have crossed over to the
darker side of staining and have a protocol you'd be willing to share, by
all means let me know.
I want to join the darkside too!
Hi Dorothy,
Controls for Verhoeff vanGieson elastic stain is very subjective due
to the differentiation in ferric chloride. Large arteries are usually used
as a control. If you differentiate all the slides based upon the appearance
of a large artery the small vessels will be totally gone. If
Why would an elastic stain work on a positive control, but the patient did not
stain?? The patient tissue is from a temporal artery which should show some
staining due to internal control??
Thanks ahead for any input on this puzzle!

All,
I have used a new Verhoeff-Van Gieson stain kit (from BBC) for elastic
fibers and have run a large number of slides. I am noticing differences
in the staining intensities throughout the samples. I see that there
are darker sites and lighter sites within the same panelists. This is
