The MCA presidential council begged him, at its day long meeting amidst which he walked out, to stay. Today (23 May 00), he refused to say if he had resigned, would attend tomorrow's cabinet meeting, and hold a post-cabinet press conference. He has, it appears, not resigned. In a separate development, the Nanyang Siang Pau reports the arrest of the fugitive business man, Dato' John Soh Chee Wen, in an African country on an Interpol warrant. If he should be put to trial, his police report, before he fled, implicating Mr Ling Hee Liong, the son of the MCA president would loom large. Reports Dato' Soh negotiates with Malaysian authorities for a settlement could well implicate the Lings. Dr Ling had appointed Dato' Soh as a member of his presidential council, after he linked up with Ling Jr, and sacked him when this pack of cards fell. But he is confident of the Prime Minister's support, though one report says the MCA presidential council rebelled at a nod from the Prime Minister to get its president to resign. Dr Ling's role to enable a bin Mahathir gaining control of Port Klang's Westport, and Ling Jr's officially approved sinecure there, complicates matters. Be that as it may, this crisis has its roots in the Bukit Pelanduk pork culling tragedy. The Nipah virus (or whatever it is) destroyed the livelihood, and lives, but the MCA held the Chinese in Negri Sembilan to ransom by threatening to withhold the compensation if an opposition candidate is elected to parliament or state assembly. None were, but the MCA did not compensate the farmers as promised. The RM40 million collected from the public is missing; and a 200 ha site in Sepang, meant for the pig farmers, was converted into industrial land and sold for RM200 million, the proceeds not going to the Bukit Pelanduk farmers. The MCA deputy president, Dato' Seri Lim Ah Lek, complained about this to the Prime Minister, mentioning several MCA resolutions asking Dr Ling to account for the RM240 million. This the Prime Minister showed to Dr Ling, who told his deputy to go fly a kite. Which is why this British public school alumnus resigned as human resources ministe shortly after. The cabinet orders Bukit Pelanduk farmers be paid their promised compensation by next week, but the amount is reduced from the pre-election RM200 per culled pig to RM70 today. As usual, the tragedy is forgotten, with the sufferers carrying on without hope, funds or future. But Dato' Seri Lim wants Dr Ling to account for the missing RM240 million, and why the promised compensation was not paid out when it should have. This, with the threat of Dato' John Soh's implicating revelations in court, unlikely as it is, forced Dr Ling's hand. He believes MCA forces him out against the Prime Minister's wishes, and fights on. But the Prime Minister would not want one in his cabinet, however needed or irreplaceable, who would drag him down, should Ling Jr's financial mess returns to public scrutiny. Dr Ling, after leading the MCA for 14 years, believes, like MCA MPs and state assemblymen, they remain in office with Malay, not Chinese, support. The problem he mentions is not the sidelining of Dato' Seri Lim's supporters in cabinet. It is far worse. So much for his pious comment that 14 years in the cabinet is long enough. But can he remain MCA president when the presidential council he appointed deserts him? He must explain his actions, if he would not now, to the MCA delegates meeting later in the year. The MCA president is about to be culled as deliberately and ruthlessly as the pigs in Bukit Pelanduk were. M.G.G.
