Anwar a ‘political prisoner', says Amien Rais
               Kevin Tan

May 16: Former deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim should
be treated as a "political
prisoner" and not like a common criminal, said Amien
Rais, the head of MPR (Indonesia's
               parliament).

"Anwar Ibrahim had suffered a long humiliation and
torture. An amiable solution must be
found to resolve this issue," said Rais at a press
conference after meeting with KeADILan
               president Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

According to Indonesian news agency Antara, Wan Azizah
had a "curhat" (heart-to-heart
talk) with Rais, who is also leader of Indonesia's Partai
Amanat Nasional (PAN), in
               Jakarta's Al-Azhar Mosque today.

Rais told journalists that he will urge various Islamic
organisations such as the
Indonesian Ulama Council and the Indonesian government to
officially request that the
               Anwar's case be resolved amicably.

"However, this doesn't imply we are interfering with the
internal matters of Malaysia," he
explained, adding that Anwar was an Asian leader of high
calibre and had contributed a
               lot to Malaysia.

Rais also said Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad should
heed the experiences of other
leaders such as Sukarno, Suharto, Ferdinand Marcos and
Idi Amin.

On Saturday, Wan Azizah had an one-hour breakfast meeting
with Indonesian President
Abdurrahman Wahid. ("Wan Azizah meets Gus Dur", May 13)

Yesterday she met with Minister for the Empowerment of
Women Khofifah Indar
Parawansa to discuss issues relating to women.

"As a woman in the ruling party, there is a lot of
experience and ideas that can be gained
               from Khofifah," Wan Azizah said.

However, Wan Azizah denied she was seeking political
support from Indonesia.

She stressed that her four-day trip in Jakarta is a
"personal visit" to enhance the rapport
between the two countries and to explain the current
condition of her husband, Anwar, to
               the Indonesian leaders.
