A Rotten Tyrant In A Moated Castle
Mahathir, in speaking to the Asia-African forum, is the perfect
example of a tyrannical demigogue.
He said,"new capitalists in the West were growing more powerful and less
considerate." He could be referring to his ministers and deputies.
He said his proposed East Asia Economic Community had failed to get
off the ground due to United States' disapproval. ASEAN is dead largely
because of his protectionism for the Malaysian car industry.
He said, "We now have to prepare ourselves to face and deal with
challenges
and dangers arising from new ideas about the structure of the world's
economy,
trade and finance. He is worried about transparency and accountability
of his
own financial dealings. He writhes when people publicize his thefts.
He said, "Most of all, we have to deal with the self-declared right
of some countries to interfere in the affairs of others." This is his
moated castle approach to foreign policy. His think tank has advised
him to resist the criticisms of his corruption coming from abroad and
to vigorously stifle dissent domestically, even to the point of having
his police murder opponents in custody. He will do anything to keep
this information from getting out, just as he knows the Mitsui bribes
must not be investigated, since they lead directly from Mitsui to him.
