Judge pulls brakes on Anwar-Mahathir war of words

KUALA LUMPUR, April 5 (Reuters) - Anwar Ibrahim's sodomy trial was
adjourned on Wednesday after the judge called a halt to a war of words
between Malaysia's jailed former finance minister and Prime Minister
Mahathir Mohamad.
Mahathir has refused, saying he believes the sex allegations against
his former deputy are true.
The judge has been bombarded with nine affidavits in the last two
weeks. The latest volley was fired by Anwar on Wednesday when he
accused Mahathir of playing a key role in framing him and destroying
his political career.
In this scenario, Dr Mahathir's testimony is extremely crucial to this
proceedings, Anwar said in an 18-page affidavit.
PLEASE, NO MORE OF THESE
Don't give him the opportunity to hide behind his mask of power and
run away from the course of justice and truth.
The affidavit was the second filed by Anwar against Mahathir. Judge
Arifin ordered that it also served on Mahathir but said prime minister
need not reply.
He then adjourned the hearing to Monday.
The judge has said the affidavits before him are only delaying the
trial, already running to 10 months, with no end in sight. Please, no
more of these, he said on Tuesday.
Anwar has also subpoenaed Finance Minister Daim Zainuddin and
Mahathir's former political secretary Aziz Shamsuddin -- both of whom
he accuses of plotting sexual allegations against him.
An attorney told the court on Monday Aziz had retracted his initial
objection to the subpoena, indicating he would appear, but Daim was
still fighting.
Anwar is on trial charged with sodomising his former driver. He was
jailed in April last year for six years for corruptly influencing
police to cover up allegations of sexual misconduct brought by the
same driver and a woman.
He denies all the charges, saying he was framed because he tried to
expose corruption in Mahathir's cabinet and had become a threat to the
premier who once regarded Anwar as his successor.
SODOMY BELIEVABLE, SAYS PM
Mahathir said in his affidavit filed on Tuesday he believed the sodomy
accusations against his former deputy and, therefore, would not be
able to give relevant or material evidence.
He said he had been mistaken when he initially said there was a plot
to smear Anwar and drive him from office.
I wish to stress that it was my right as prime minister to oust him,
said Mahathir, who sacked Anwar in September 1998.
Anwar said police had investigated thoroughly when sexual allegations
first surfaced against him in 1997 and Mahathir had accepted their
findings. But the premier ordered a fresh probe after the two of them
had a fall-out, he said.
Anwar, widely-respected in world religious forums as a Moslem cleric
when he was in power, said Mahathir had often ridiculed his
background.
That's why he and the conspirators chose adultery and sodomy as these
are among the most potent political weapons to slander someone like
me.
